In Abuja, Patience Jonathan Backs Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election

Former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan has declared she has no intention of returning to Aso Rock, affirming instead her full support for First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu as the nation heads towards the 2027 general elections.Speaking on Saturday night in Abuja, where she received the Women Icon Leader of the Year 2025 award from Accolade Dynamics Limited, Jonathan reaffirmed her support for the principle of rotational leadership, describing the “turn-by-turn” system as vital to maintaining national unity.

rMrs Jonathan’s remarks in Abuja may put an end to speculations that her husband, the former President , Goodluck Jonathan may be eyeing the office he vacated in 2015.
“I believe in one president. I believe in turn-by-turn. When it’s your turn, I will support you. When it’s not your turn, step back—so that the country can move forward,” she said. She addressed the crowd while acknowledging the presence of Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu and the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria.“I was supposed to call her first, but I saved her for last: the daughter of our wonderful President, the President of Nigeria, the one and only we believe in — President Bola Tinubu. Iyaloja, thank you for standing with women because these are your women. Carry them along; they are with you.“All the way, we are with you. No shaking. We will follow. Direct us, and we will follow. Because there is only one president at a time. We don’t have two presidents. I am outspoken — if I don’t like something, I will say it. But if I like something, I die for it.”Reflecting on her longstanding bond with Senator Remi Tinubu, Jonathan revealed that their relationship dates back to their days as wives of state governors and deputies, long before either entered Aso Rock.“I didn’t just know her (Senator Oluremi Tinubu) just because she’s the First Lady, no. We worked together. We worked as a group.“We are groups. We worked when I was a deputy governor’s wife. We worked when I was a governor’s wife. I know her. I talked with Oluremi. Even when my husband was the vice president, Oluremi stood with her husband and supported us during our first election. They supported us. So, for me, I have a conscience. I cannot abandon my friend, whether you like it or not.”She reiterated her commitment to standing by the First Lady and dismissed any speculation about a political comeback.“I stand by my friend. My friend is great. I told her I would campaign with her. I’m not denying her. I’m not running. I’m not going back to the villa. If you call me, I will not go.“I say it every day. Don’t you like how young I look? People say, ‘Mama, you are young, you are young!’ it is because I have a rest of mind, yes. I don’t want to go there—let my friend be there. Let me also ‘wahala’ her the way she used to ‘wahala’ me when I was there! Let me also tease her. And until she comes out, she will be young. But for now, she won’t be young.”The former First Lady also used the occasion to advocate for the 35 percent affirmative action for women in governance, expressing disappointment over the National Assembly’s repeated rejection of gender equality bills.“During Obasanjo’s time, we worked for it, and the Executive approved 35 per cent. My husband also maintained it. But when it comes to elective positions, the men dominate and shut us out. May God touch their hearts to understand that we are their mothers, sisters, and friends. We are not trying to take power from them—we are trying to support them.”While accepting her award, Jonathan emphasised that the recognition symbolizes the collective effort of many who have championed the welfare of women.“I am deeply humbled to receive this prestigious Women Icon Leader of the Year 2025 award. I accept this honour not just as a personal recognition, but as a testament to the tireless efforts of countless women and men who have worked alongside me to promote good health and economic development for women in Nigeria and beyond.”

Senate Gives NNPCL Three Weeks to Answer Queries Over Missing N210 trillion

The Senate through its Committee on Public Accounts, yesterday gave the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL) three weeks to respond to queries raised against it in the Audit Reports of 2017 to 2023, alleging unaccountability of N210trillion.

This is as the Committee chaired by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu (SDP, Nasarawa West) insisted that the amount in question was neither stolen or missing, but yet to be accounted for.

However, the three weeks window for explanations was given to the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Engineer Bayo Ojulari after he finally honoured the senate invitation after four previous failures, with an unreserved apology which the senate accepted.

Ojulari had after his apology to the Committee, explained to its members that for satisfactory response from him on the 19 queries raised, he needed more time to dig into the technicalities and perspectives of the issues raised.

” I’m just over 100 days in office as the GCEO of NNPCL. Please I will need time to do further digging, given the perspectives I have heard now into the issues. This is coming in the midst of a huge national assignment. Your explanation has now changed my perspective about the subject matter.

” I need to understand the issues myself so I can respond appropriately. I will get a team to help me get the details properly reconciled, so we can work to provide answers to the queries.

” In doing this, I will surely engage the external auditors and other relevant groups “, he said.

Though he requested for four weeks, the Committee granted him three weeks which according to him is enough for the response expected from NNPCL.

Explaining the nitty gritty of the queries to the NNPCL GCEO, Senator Wadada said the N210trillion unaccounted for were in two components of N103trillion liabilities and N107trillion assets which according to him must be accounted for.

“There are none out of the 18 or 19 questions we have on NNPCL from us as a Committee, neither did it come from the Executive or Judiciary. They are questions extracted from the audited financial statement of the NNPCL by the Auditor General for the period spanning 2017 to 2023.

” Also this Committee had not at any time said the N210trillion in question as far as the queries are concerned was stolen or missing. What the Committee is doing is investigation on queries raised in the report, in line with its constitutional mandate.

” Therefore , the Committee is giving NNPCL three weeks to forward written responses to it on all the 19 queries after which the GCEO will be invited along with other management staff for physical appearance and defence”, he said.

Earlier before the ruling of the Chairman, virtually all members of the Committee spoke on the seriousness of the issues at stake but expressed optimism that the GCEO will clear the air on them.

Specifically, Senator Victor Umeh ( LP, Anambra Central) said : ” We are happy to have you because we have been waiting for you. One thing that must be stated clearly is that we need transparency, and NNPCL is in possession of Nigeria’s economic prosperity”.

Senator Babangida Hussaini ( APC, Jigawa North West ) in his comments said there was need for NNPCL management team to look into the issues raised since governance is a continuum, stressing that the issues were germane and critical.

But another member of the Committee, Senator Tony Nwoye (LP, Anambra North)said ” It is very important and germane to give them ( NNPCL) fair hearing. Maybe the audited report is not correct”.
