JAMB Uncovers 1,665 Fake A’Level Results

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has uncovered at least 1,665 fake A’level results during the Direct Entry registration process.

The board’s weekly bulletin made available to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, said the Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede gave the figures when he received officials of the National Association of Nigeria Colleges of Education Students, in his office.

He explained that the A’level results verification was occasioned by the endemic corruption associated with the system and the need to restore the integrity of the admission process.

According to him, out of the fake results, 397 were from Colleges of Education, 453 university diplomas and the rest for other A’level certificates.

Oloyede said the institutions must take measures to safeguard the integrity of their certificates, adding that JAMB would continue to scrutinise the  certificates through measures that would stand the test of time.

The registrar recalled that in the past, when a candidate applied for Direct Entry, the Board would simply ask awarding institutions to do the necessary screening and due diligence.

He however said that JAMB was dumbfounded by the startling revelations from Bayero University, Kano, where out of the 148 Direct Entry applications to the institution, only six of the certificates forwarded for processing were genuine.

The registrar added that it was the discovery of this monumental fraud that prompted the meeting of critical stakeholders, who met to chart ways of combating the menace.

Part of the measures suggested, he said, was the constitution of an A’level result verification task force as well as the creation of a common platform for the verification of A’level results and certificates.

He said the platform was reliable and user-friendly as it only took five minutes to verify any certificate.

Oloyede also disclosed that the board had adopted “No verification, No admission” policy.

The registrar said 15 institutions had not sufficiently complied with the verification requests from the board, adding that more than 20 unverified candidates were affected.

He said that the board would have to pre-verify candidates applying with the certificates of the 15 institutions before they could complete their  DE registration process.

According to him, in the ongoing DE registration, candidates could go ahead and register while the school verify them at the backend.

He, however, declared that the 15 institutions, which were yet to fully comply, would have to pre-verify holders of their certificates before they complete registration process. (NAN)

Education Minister Bows to Pressure, Pegs ‘Varsity Entry Age at 16

Education Minister, Professor Tahir Mamman yesterday, bowed to pressure mounted by Vice Chancellors of universities and heads of tertiary institutions in Nigeria to peg the minimum entry age to Nigerian universities and tertiary institutions at 16 years.

This was just as the nation’s universities adopted 140 as the baseline score for admissions as well as 100 for polytechnics and Colleges of Education (CoEs) for the next academic session (2024/25).

The 16-year age approval came moments after the minister had already announced emphatically in his speech at the opening of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) policy meeting for 2024 that the  entry age would be 18 as prescribed by extant laws of the country, particularly the National Policy on Education.

In his initial directive, the minister had explained that the minimum six years of age for primary education automatically implied that any applicant who began primary school at the prescribed age would have attained 18 years  at the time of completion of secondary education and application for university admission.

The minister’s declaration was however, met with shouts of disapproval from most of the over 3,000 top education administrators in the audience.

As the education administrators sustained their opposition, the Vice Chancellor of Elizade University, Professor Kayode Ijadunola moved a motion for reduction of the age limit to 16.

Ijadunola argued that since the applicants had already taken the UMTE, so the entry 18 years entry age be enforced in subsequent years.

After due consultation, the Minister accepted the proposals from the academic institutions but ruled however, that after the 2024/25 academic session, admission age would be pegged at 18.

He directed JAMB to ensure that adequate publicity as given to the new directive to guide future applicants and parents.

The policy meeting, attended by Vice Chancellors, provosts of CoEs, rectors of polytechnics and heads of education agencies is convened annually by JAMB to adopt admission policies and procedures after the annual Universities and Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Mamman warned admission officers and heads of tertiary institutions to adhere strictly to the guidelines as proposed by JAMB and democratically approved by yesterday’s Policy Meeting.

He regretted that improprieties in the admission process had led to the illegal admission of one million students in the universities, polytechnics and COEs since 2017 but warned that such would no longer be condoned.

The minister announced that a new curriculum for secondary schools in the country with emphasis on skills acquisition would be introduced from September and said the new policy would be presented to various stakeholders including the National Council on Education for approval before its eventual launch at the start of the next academic session.

According to the minister, the new policy was the ministry’s response to the problem of unemployment of school leavers and crisis faced by many secondary graduates in the pursuit of admission in the tertiary institutions.

“These young children live with us and we must care about their future,” he stated adding that the graduates with reasonable skills would better fend for themselves if they could not pursue higher education.

The minister warned the recently inaugurated governing councils of Federal Government owned universities and tertiary institutions to ensure they operate according to the laws guiding their respective institutions and to avoid the temptation to usurp the powers of the heads of the institutions on critical issues such as appointment of principal officers and procurement of goods and services.

He also clarified that there was no plan by the Federal Government to privatise any of its tertiary institutions or transfer its management to private hands, contrary to what he described as “propaganda in certain quarters”.

Registrar of JAMB, Prof Is-haq Oloyode, who led participants through adoption of the comprehensive admissions policy for 2024/25 academic session warned that the board will not condone any sharp practices in line with its zero –tolerance on corruption in the admissions process.

He assured that the huge investment in technology by the board had made it impossible for criminally minded applicants to circumvent the rigorous examination and admission processes and vowed that anybody who attempted to manipulate the system would be fished out and punished according to law.

He said some applicants and staff of some institutions were already in police custody over various infractions of the law and assured that the suspects would be taken to court to face the law.

Navy Donates Educational Materials to A’Ibom School

The Nigerian Navy, Forward Operating Base (FOB), Ibaka, under Operation Delta Sanity 11, has donated educational materials to Saint Paul’s African Primary School in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

The Commanding Officer, FOB, Ibaka, Capt. Uche Aneke, who made the donation on Friday, said the gesture was part of the efforts to kick-start Operation Delta Sanity 11 and foster civil relationship with host communities.

Aneke enlightened the students that Operation Delta Sanity 11 was a renewed effort of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm.

Emmanuel Ogalla, toward ending the menace of crude oil theft.

He further enlightened them on the economic and environmental effects of illegal oil bunkering and smuggling of petroleum products as well as the security consequences on the Nigerian maritime environment.

He said that the Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) exercise, which involved educational outreach and community services among others, was used to drive the message in a non-kinetic line of operation.

He emphasised that under the current leadership of the Chief of Naval Staff, such community services would be constant and sustained.

The Commanding Officer urged the female pupils to take their academics seriously and observe good hygiene.

“Parents of  girls of school-age who are out of school within the community are also encouraged to enroll in school for a brighter future,” he said.

Aneke said Operation Delta Sanity 11 as well as constant surveillance of areas under the FOB Ibaka Area of Operations and Eastern Naval Command Area of Responsibility would be sustained.

He explained that the operations were aimed at flushing out all forms of criminal elements.

In her remarks, the Head Teacher of St. Paul’s African Primary School at Ibaka, Mrs Justina Uko, thanked the Nigerian Navy for the gesture.

Uko said that the initiative would enhance education in the community.

She emphasised the importance of girl-child in the country and prayed that God would continue to bless the Nigerian Navy for impacting knowledge on the pupils of the school.

“We thank and appreciate Nigerian Navy for what they have done to the pupils of the school; we pray that God should bless them more and more,” the head teacher said.

Highlights of the outreach included sensitisation lecture and the donation of exercise books and writing materials to encourage and support the schoolgirls.

Report says that the theme of the exercise was “The impact of Girl-Child Education on Community Development with focus on the Ibaka Community”. (NAN)

Additional 12 State-owned Tertiary Institutions Submit Student Data to NELFUND

The Management of Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced the onboarding of an additional 12 state government-owned tertiary institutions to the student loan application portal.

This is disclosed in a statement made available to newsmen by Nasir Ayitogo, Head, Media and Public Relations, NELFUND, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Ayitogo said that the expansion came following the successful submission and verification of data completeness and accuracy required from the institutions.

He said with the latest addition, the total number of participating state government-owned tertiary institutions had been increased from the initial 36 to 48.

Ayitogo urged all institutions yet to submit their students’ data to the Student Verification Portal (SVS) of the fund to do so to enable their students benefit from the scheme.

He advised states whose data had been captured and successfully uploaded to urgently sensitise their students to apply.

He said doing this would bring succour to students, who were struggling financially whilst also bringing guaranteed revenue to the institutions.

Ayitogo urged students from the newly added state government-owned tertiary institutions to visit www.nelf.gov.ng to apply for the loan, while noting that students’ data from 121 institutions was still outstanding.

He listed the 12 additional state-owned tertiary institutions as Abia State Polytechnic, Benue State University, Makurdi, College of Education, Waka-Biu and University of Medical and Applied Sciences Enugu State.

Others are Aliko Dangote University of science and Technology Wudil, Kano State, Kwara Polytechnic, Lagos State University of Science and Technology and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai, Niger State.

In the list are also Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Taraba State Polytechnic and Yobe State University.
