Lessons I Learned From Disappointment of AFCON 2023 with Mali – Chelle
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has explained some of the lessons he has learnt from his disappointing experience with Mali at the 2023 AFCON coming into this year’s tournament.
Chelle, who was in charge of Mali at the 2023 edition, was on the verge of taking them to the semi-finals against hosts Cote d’Ivoire who played with 10 men for most parts of the game.
But Cote d’Ivoire equalised in the 90th minute before netting the second goal two minutes into the second half of extra-time.
Reflecting on the heartbreak of the 2023 tournament, Chelle spoke about measures he has taken heading into this year’s edition in Morocco.
“Since this AFCON started I’ve tried to be more focused, more concentrated, more calm and I try to analyse during a game and after the game I try to forget about what happened around the team and around me,” he said in his pre-match presser on Sunday.
“Like I said everytime about my philosophy and project, so I try to be focused and calm so these are my lessons.
“I don’t know if it is an advantage but the reality is there will be two teams on the pitch and the question is if my team will be ready for this fight and like I said we are focused on this team Mozambique.”

AFCON 2025: Nigeria Remains Proud of You, FG Tells Super Eagles
The Federal Government has commended the Super Eagles for their performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, assuring the team that Nigerians remain proud of them despite their semi-final exit from the tournament.
In a statement released on Thursday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government praised the players for representing the country with pride, dignity and resilience throughout the competition.
He said the players’ conduct and fighting spirit embodied the values associated with the national colours, stressing that the team’s effort mattered as much as the final result.
“Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork and resilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent,” the minister said.
According to Idris, the Super Eagles reminded Nigerians that playing for the country goes beyond winning matches, describing the green and white jersey as a symbol of courage, unity and perseverance.
“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity and never giving up. Football has its highs and lows, but your effort and commitment throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad,” he said.
The minister urged the team to remain united, learn from the experience and return stronger, assuring them of the nation’s continued support.
“Hold your heads high, stay united and return stronger. Nigeria is grateful for the joy and hope you gave us during this competition, and the nation stands with you, always,” Idris added.
The Super Eagles were knocked out of the tournament on Wednesday after losing 4–2 in a penalty shootout to host nation Morocco, following a goalless draw after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The semi-final was keenly contested, with Morocco enjoying more of the attacking initiative, registering 16 shots to Nigeria’s two.
Both sides, however, were kept in the game by impressive goalkeeping displays from Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali and Morocco’s Yassine Bounou.
Nigeria’s key attackers, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, found it difficult to break through the hosts’ defence, as Morocco secured a place in the final via penalties.

Super Eagles Threaten to Boycott Algeria Match over Unpaid Bonuses
Super Eagles players have threatened not to travel to Marrakech for their next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match against Algeria unless all outstanding winning bonuses are paid by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
A highly reliable source within the team disclosed.
According to the source, players and officials are reportedly still awaiting their bonus payments from the tournament.
It was gathered that win bonuses for the four matches against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique have yet to be settled.
While the team remains committed to the competition, they have made it clear that they will not train or travel to Marrakech for the next match unless the outstanding payments are resolved, our source confirmed.
Recall that in November, the team also threatened to boycott their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Gabon, citing unpaid entitlements.
In a joint statement signed by players and staff, the squad said, “The full squad, including officials, withheld from training today in Morocco because of unresolved issues with outstanding payments. The Super Eagles are awaiting a quick resolution to continue preparations for Thursday’s game with Gabon.”
