The Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, the Minister of State, Alhaji Uba Maigari, and Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, have commended the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) for taking proactive steps toward developing a strategic roadmap for the region’s growth.

The commendations came during the opening of a two-day policy review retreat held in Lafia, Nasarawa State, organized by the NCDC in collaboration with SPRING, a development partner.
Governor Abdullahi Sule, represented by his deputy, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, described the initiative as timely and commendable, noting that holding such a policy retreat at the inception of the Commission’s activities reflects foresight and commitment to inclusive development.
“The idea of holding this policy development retreat at the inception of its journey is not only proper but also a proactive approach by the Board and Management of the Commission,” Sule said. “The NCDC has done the right thing by bringing together experts and key stakeholders to discuss ideas for the development of the region in line with its mandate.”He assured that his administration would continue to collaborate with other North Central governors in supporting the Commission through strategic partnerships aimed at reducing development gaps and enhancing prosperity in the region. In his remarks, Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, lauded the NCDC for setting an example among other regional development commissions. He said the Commission’s efforts were already being recognized as a model for peer review.“The NCDC is setting the pace among its peers, and many are looking up to its initiatives for peer review,” Momoh stated. “I urge the Commission to continue engaging all stakeholders as it develops a roadmap backed by a practical development plan aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”Momoh emphasized the importance of equity, fairness, and inclusivity in implementing the Commission’s projects and programmes, adding that all processes must adhere strictly to laid-down procedures.Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari, also praised the Commission’s performance since its inauguration, urging it to channel efforts toward impactful projects in roads, agriculture, security, health, education, job creation, and environmental protection.“The NCDC has been up and doing since its inception,” Maigari said. “I am optimistic that the roadmap, when fully developed, will be clear, concise, and actionable, thereby reducing project duplication and ensuring effective use of resources.”The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Regional Development, Dr. Rose Ogbe, underscored the need for the Commission to maintain a people-centered approach. She said, “The Commission must remain passionate about serving the people, who are the ultimate beneficiaries of its programmes and interventions.”Chairman of the NCDC Board, Cosmas Akighir, explained that the retreat was organized to generate valuable input from stakeholders, which would form the foundation of the policy document to guide the Commission’s activities.“This meeting is meant to elicit contributions from stakeholders that will enrich the policy document we are producing,” Akighir said. “The Board and Management have been working together for a smooth takeoff, and we will sustain this tempo to achieve our mandate.”The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NCDC, Dr. Cyril Yiltsen Tsenyil, said the retreat was part of efforts to consolidate progress and align the Commission’s vision with practical realities.“The Commission decided to host this retreat in collaboration with SPRING to consolidate on the progress made so far and ensure we are on track,” Tsenyil said. “So far, we have held productive meetings under the leadership of our Chairman, where proactive decisions were made to establish structures, systems, and strategies to tackle the challenges facing the North Central region.”The Chairman, Senate Committee on NCDC, Senator Titus Zam, and his deputy, Senator Jibrin Isa Echoco, also lauded the initiative, describing the retreat as an avenue for robust engagement between the Commission and critical stakeholders.Deputy Team Lead of SPRING, Ms. Priscillia Ankut, said the organization’s collaboration with the NCDC was driven by its interest in accelerating development across the North Central zone.“We are excited to partner with the NCDC in propelling development in the region through evidence-based planning and implementation,” Ankut noted. The retreat featured paper presentations by experts on key thematic areas, including The Socio-Economic and Cultural Profile of the North Central Region: Challenges and Opportunities, Institutional Governance and Accountability for Development Commissions, and a review of the NCDC Draft Roadmap Policy Document. The event attracted key policymakers, traditional rulers, development experts, and representatives of partner agencies committed to advancing the growth and development of the North Central region.

Two crew members of a US army helicopter that crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday were rescued by an American sea drone, US officials have said.

It was the first such operation carried out by US forces, the officials added.

US Central Command (Centcom) earlier said the two “soldiers were safely rescued within approximately two hours and are in stable condition” after their AH-64 Apache helicopter went down “near the coast of Oman while patrolling regional waters”.

It was not immediately clear whether the aircraft had developed a mechanical or any other technical problem, or had been downed by Iranian fire. The incident is being investigated.

In its statement on Tuesday, Centcom said the two crew members had been rescued at 19:33 EDT (23:33 GMT) on Monday.

“Rescue efforts were led by US Naval Forces Central Command and the 82nd Airborne Division, with support from US Air Force and Navy units including US 5th Fleet’s Task Force 59,” the statement added.

The military officials said the pair had been rescued by an uncrewed surface drone that was operated by Task Force 59.

In 2024, Task Force 59 launched a new unit focusing on “the operational deployment of unmanned systems teamed with manned operators to bolster maritime security across the Middle East region”.

It was not immediately clear what type of drone was used in the rescue operation, but a US official said that it had a speed boat-like design.

US President Donald Trump earlier told reporters the two crew members were “fine”, and that a report into the incident would be issued later.

From Attah Ede, Makurdi

The Benue State House of Assembly has extended the suspension of former Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, and former Majority Leader, Saater Tiseer, by an additional three months pending the determination of separate court cases instituted by the duo against the legislature or the withdrawal of the suits.

‎The resolution was reached during plenary on Tuesday, presided over by the speaker, Berger Alfred Emberga, following a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Majority Leader of the House and member representing Kwande West State Constituency, Thomas Dugeri, and seconded by the Deputy Chief Whip, Simon Gabo, representing Mata State Constituency.

The House subsequently adopted the motion and resolved that the suspension of the two lawmakers should remain in force for another three months pending the outcome of the judicial process or the withdrawal of their respective cases against the Assembly in line with the law governing the institution.

‎Also during Tuesday’s plenary, the Benue State Sports Marketing, Gaming and Lotteries Bill, 2026 scaled through second reading on the floor of the House.

Following its consideration, the Speaker, Alfred Emberga referred the bill to the Joint House Committees on Finance, Youth and Sports for further legislative scrutiny.

‎In his opening remarks marking the commencement of the First Sitting of the Fourth Legislative Session, the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Emberga welcomed members back from recess and urged them to remain committed to their legislative responsibilities.

He noted that the recess afforded lawmakers the opportunity to engage with their constituents and participate in political activities, including party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

‎The Speaker described the Fourth Legislative Session as a defining phase in the Assembly’s tenure and charged members to focus on issues that directly impact the welfare of the people. He identified security and peace-building, economic resilience, infrastructure development, enhanced revenue generation, effective oversight of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and greater citizen participation in the legislative process as key priorities for the session.

He further urged members to sustain harmonious collaboration with other arms of government while remaining steadfast in making laws that reflect the aspirations and yearnings of the Benue State people.
