Niger Govt, Opposition Trade Blame over N1trn Debt

From Dan Amasingha, Minna

Niger State Government said it remains resolute and committed to its infrastructural development as well as delivering on its New Niger Agenda, but the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged him to account for the One Trillion Naira borrowed fund.

The war started when Governor Umar Bago  expressed  displeasure  to Contractors handling  multi-million Naira  contracts under the new Niger agenda for slow pace of delivery.

He said if he had known they would have been sabotaging the administration effort, instead of taking a loan of N1m, the Government would have obtained a facility for Five hundred billion Naira.

However, the opposition speaking through, the Vice Chairman of PDP Niger North, Alhaji Yahaya Ability decried the huge debt burden of the State without a single completed project to show for the humongous amount.

“The State PDP vice Chairman challenged the Governor to give an account of how such a humongous amount was borrowed with an increased monthly federation allocation as a result of subsidy removal, but yet the administration is yet to deliver a single project almost two years in its life span.

Reacting to the uproar that greeted the Governor’s statement, his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim has in a statement said his principal was quoted out of context.

“Farmer Governor is so passionate about the Urban—Rural Renewal Projects in the state, hence, his Boss feels saddened by the slow pace of work on some projects”

Bologi Ibrahim, however, said the now viral statement online, that Farmer Governor Bago “regrets securing a N1trillion loan for the state’s Urban—Rural Renewal Projects instead of N500 Billion”, was contextually misunderstood.

The Chief Press Secretary said the farmer Governor has at different fora reiterated that he has enough funds to execute all the ongoing projects in the State.

He said, at the meeting with the contractors handling various projects in the state, the Farmer Governor expressed his apprehension over delays in projects execution but couldn’t have “regretted” (in the actual sense of the word)

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor said claims suggesting regret are a misrepresentation of the position and intent of the farmer Governor.

He said the State Government is commencing the second phase of its Urban — Rural Renewal Projects by the end of this year, God’s willing, and Governor Umaru Bago will surely not accept drawbacks on the ongoing projects from the contractors, especially when the funds are available.

The Governor assured that the state government is judiciously utilising the state resources and dismissed concerns about potential strains on the state.

The Chief Press Secretary urged the Public to disregard the unfounded and misleading report as Governor Umaru Bago has always prioritised transparency in financial matters by publishing financial statements of the state in national dailies.
