NNPCL Declares Pipeline Vandalization National Calamity

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has lamented the steady vandalization of oil pipelines across the country, declaring the menace “a national calamity.”

that vandalism carried out on over 5,000 kilometers of oil pipelines by vandals across the country has become a national calamity.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Company, Mele Kyari who made the declaration yesterday during an interactive session with the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), however assured Nigerians that the Nation’s four oil refineries would be made functional very soon.

The problem of oil pipeline vandalism, according to him, has been bedeviling the sector over the decades as the Company had not been able to pump oil through pipeline from Warri to Benin within the last 22 years.

” Over 5,000 kilometers of oil pipelines in the country are not working. As a result of pipeline vandalism, 10million litres of oil was lost from the volume pumped from Aba to Enugu at a time.

” The company has been unable to pump oil from Warri to Benin within the last 22 years and cannot connect to Ore.

” There is no amount of security measures that had not been taken to curb the crime without success, which to us in NNPCL is substantially a national calamity “, he said.

He however said as a way out, the company is embarking on massive replacement of the pipelines which aside being vandalized, are old and obsolete.

He explained further to the Committee that deregulation of the oil sector and in particular, subsidy removal carried out in May this year, has turned NNPCL into a profitable company.

According to him, before deregulation in 2018, the company made a loss of N802 billion but after deregulation in 2021, made an excess profit of N687 billion.

He added that while 67 million litres of oil was consumed per day during the era of subsidy regime, an average of 55million litres are being consumed on daily basis now, just as the problem of smuggling the product across borders has become a thing of the past.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah (APC Anambra South) and all the members, responded separately to submissions made by the NNPCL boss that proper dissection of challenges facing the sector would be better made in a retreat.

But Senator Seriake Dickson (PDP Bayelsa West), told the NNPCL boss to look critically into the surveillance security contract the company is operating as regards non-inclusion of some oil producing areas.

“Some local governments in Bayelsa State like Sagbama where I come from, are not covered by the contract with attendant consequences “, he said.

Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun on Monday bagged the Asiwaju of Edeland chieftaincy title, dedicating it to his late brother, Sen. Isiaka Adeleke, among others.

The governor, receiving the title in Oshogbo, said it was also dedicated to his late parents; his brother, Dr Adedeji Adeleke; and his sister, Chief Dupe Adeleke-Sanni.

He said that his late brother, Isiaka, was the former holder of the title, and the conferment on him was a further call to service.

Adeleke said that the traditional ruler of his hometown, Oba Munirudeen Lawal, the Timi Ede, conferred the title on him in recognition of his family’s contribution to the development of the town.

“I vow to be a frontliner (Asiwaju) of development and growth for Edeland and Osun state as a whole.

“I will carry the light of positive transformation from towns to villages and from cities to rural areas across our dear state,” he said.

The event attracted several dignitaries, including Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos; his Ogun counterpart, Dapo Abiodun; and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo; the acting Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Damagum; and former governor of Oyo State, Rasheed Ladoja, among others, also witnessed the conferment.

Makinde, who spoke on behalf of the governors, congratulated Adeleke on the conferment of the title.

He commended him on infrastructure development in the state.

“I thank God for my brother, Gov. Ademola Adeleke.

“When he came in as the governor of Osun State, he challenged me that he would compete with me in infrastructure development, as I was doing in Oyo State.

“When I came today, I could see work ongoing in the state.

“I am the Vice Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum and I am speaking on their behalf to congratulate you,’’ he said.

Reports says that traditional rulers at the event include the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; Soun of Ogbomosho, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; and Olowu of Kuta, Oba Makama Oyelude. (NAN)

The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), University of Abuja chapter, says the union will not call off its strike until all issues are addressed.

The branch Chairman, Dr Sylvanus Ugoh, told newsmen on Monday in Abuja that the members were not working.

“Those against the strike may possibly be beneficiaries of what the union is fighting against.

“Any member found breaking the strike will be subjected to disciplinary procedure.

According to him, 90 to 95 per cent of lecturers are on strike.

Reports says that the lecturers had, on May 2, declared an indefinite strike to draw attention of the school management to pressing issues.

One of the issues was the University’s refusal to conduct elections for the office of the Deans of Faculties and Provost, College of Health Sciences.

The Union also accused the University of carrying out promotion of some members of staff without following due process.

Other reasons for the strike, according to the union, include advertorial for the vacancy of the post of Vice Chancellor without following due process, among others.

The chairman said that ASUU had withdrawn the services of their members in the university.

“ASUU does not lock university, what ASUU did was to withdraw services members render to the university.

”What we are saying is that our members are not working,” he said.

On the issue of some lecturers indicating interest to lecture, he said that even in a national strike, some would still want to go against the action.

However, Dr Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director, Information and University Relations, said the management was not aware of any strike.

Yakoob said that many lecturers had indicated interest to teach, adding that students were also prepared to receive lectures.

A correspondent, who was at the university’s permanent site, reports that students were seen on campus to officially resume second semester academic activities.

NAN also reports that as at the time of the visit, no academic activities was seen going on in the lecture halls.

A Student, Adenike Owolabi, said students were just resuming for their second semester and hopefully lectures would commence soon.

Owolabi, who said the students were not ready for any strike, added that they had wasted so much time as a result of incessant strikes.

She, therefore, called on the school management to resolve whatever the problem was, to avoid a situation where the school may be shut down. (NAN)
