From Dan Amasingha, Minna.

Worried by the action of Trailer and Tanker drivers who laid siege on Niger State on Friday, the state council of Nigeria union of  Journalists (NUJ) has condemned in strong terms, their action that has caused untold hardships to motorists and commuters.

The Union  said it was displeased at the arm – twisting tactics adopted by  drivers of articulated vehicles to  block the  Bida- Lapai, Suleja – Minna road and other strategic junctions    to press home their demand for  government to allow them use Minna- Bida road.

In a statement issued by the State Secretary, Comrade Usman Chiji,  NUJ described the action as unfortunate noting that  the  issue  at hand could be resolved amicably  in a round table rather than inflicting pains on ordinary Nigerians, who are trying to eke a living for themselves.

According to the State  council, the action of the drivers to block the road and other strategic  junctions at Bida has caused untold hardship to innocent and law abiding citizens  especially those using the roads for  their means of livelihood.

The union emphasised the need for the drivers to embrace dialogue as a way of resolving the issue rather than subjecting residents of Bida  and the entire  commuters and motorists coming or passing through the State to untold hardship.

It then called on the people to  continue to support and cooperate with the state government towards speedy completion of Minna- Bida road.
