From Vincent Nyinongu, Makurdi

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has lauded federal government initiative under the programme, Nigeria Agribusiness and Agro-Industry Development Initiative (NAADI) aimed at diversifying the economy for greater gains.

Governor Ortom stated this yesterday at the event marking the flag off and official commissioning of the Benue State Office for the Implementation of the programme in Makurdi.

The programme which is anchored by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment is imbued with the strategic intent of developing agribusiness to transform the economy for the purpose of employment generation, wealth creation and food security for the people of Nigeria.

Represented by his Chief of staff, Hon. Terwase Orbunde, the Governor recalled and chuckled at quality memories of his cordial relationship and support he enjoyed from staff of the Ministry while he served as the minister of state, Industry, Trade and Investment and urged then to sustain effort as there was reward for faithful service.

Governor Ortom said the Nigeria’s national economy was in crisis and there was the dire need to diversify so as to bring the economy back on track and commended federal government for the initiative.

“Our national economy is in crisis, and our efforts to diversify away from oil to non-oil sector are yet to yield significant returns as pointers to indices have shown negative results with national poverty rate increasing from 40.1% in 2019 to 43% in 2021 with a projection to rise to 45.2% in 2022. This implies that 1.9 million Nigerians will be living in poverty by 2022. Also, the unemployment rate has increased to 32.5% in 2021, inflation has risen to 17.93% in May 2021 and the quality of life has degenerated so severely in the country.

“The high rate of 411 naira per Dollar has literally crippled manufacturers as they couldn’t afford procurement of raw materials, machines and spare parts thus worsening unemployment rates in the country.

“It’s no secret that we have experienced the worst form of recession since 1980, coupled with the covid-19 pandemic hence the need to do everything possible to bring the economy back on track. It is in this context that the federal ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment has brought up this innovation for economic diversification, recovery and growth,” Ortom averred.

Ortom infirmed that the vision of the initiative was in line with Benue State agro-driven industrialization economic strategy which is why the state supported ranching as the best practice for animal husbandry for high productivity while freeing the available lands for agriculture

He urged federal government to demonstrate strong will in realizing this laudable initiative so it does not die naturally like similar ones in the past. The Governor, therefore, called on the federal government to tackle security challenges and ensure equal access to all.

Earlier, Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Ambassador Mrs Maryam Yalwaji Katagum, stated that NAADI initiative represented a paradigm shift for agro-industrial revolution in Nigeria conceived within the context of the Nigeria industrial revolution plan (NIRP) of the ministry. She added that the design concept of NAADI was derived from a generic framework produced by UNIDO under the African Agribusiness and Agro- industry Development Initiative AADI (3ADI), which was launched in March 2010 and formally adopted for domestication in Nigeria as NAADI.

Represented by the Director, Commodities and Export Department of the ministry, Suleiman Adebayo Audu, thanked Governor Ortom for the establishment of NAADI while serving as the minister of state, federal ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.

In his welcome speech, Honourable Commissioner for Industry and Cooperatives, Barrister Kachina Merga, said the initiative was in line with the state policy of agriculture-driven industrialisation and assuring the maximum support of the ministry.

By Laide Akinboade, Abuja
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, haom Wednesday,  expressed satisfaction with the quality and speed of the ongoing road constructions in Kuje, Kuje Area Council.
The roads that were inspected by the Minister included, the six-lane dual carriageway from Airport Expressway to Kuje Junction and the five-kilometre dual carriageway from Garage Junction to LEA Secretariat, in Kuje.

The minister explained that the five-kilometre dual carriage way from Garage Junction to LEA Secretariat was nominated by the council’s chairman and stakeholders in the area.

He said that the contractor has done earth work covering 2.
5 kilometres, adding that what would follow was the drainage.
According to the Minister, “The Area Council Chairman and the stakeholders in Kuje were the ones that nominated this road. And the road is 5 kilometers and just like what the contractor said, they started from where they have difficulty so that by the time they get to where there is consent they would have sorted out the issues.
“From what they have said today, they have done the earthwork to 2 kilometers and they said before the end of the year they would have completed this particular road.
“And the one from the airport to Kuje city here, which is being handled by the Arab contractors, you can see that their work is going on very well.
“And with the quality of work we are quite satisfied too. The contractor said before the end of the year they would have completed the earthwork. It gladdens our heart that we are meeting our targets.”
Earlier, Mr Shehu Ahmad, Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority, said that the road, linking the Airport Expressway to Kuje township would cover 11 kilometres.
Ahmad explained that between the airport expressway to Kuje junction, the road would cross over two rivers and also cross over the Outer Southern Expressway that would link the city centre with Gwagwalada Expressway.
He added that the Airport Expressway to Kuje Junction would cover nine kilometres, while the remaining two kilometres would extend backward towards Kyami District.
He explained that one of the major constraints affecting the delivery of the road was the presence of five towers belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) along the road corridor.
The FCDA boss added that TCN have been contacted and have agreed to relocate the towers, stressing that until the obstructions were removed, work could not take place in the affected areas.
