PDP BoT Harps on NEC Meeting to Address Pressing Issues
By Johnson Eyiangho, Abuja
The Board of Trustee (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stressed the need to convene the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party scheduled for October 24, 2024 to address pressing matters and strategize on the way forward.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the BoT 78th meeting which was held on Thursday at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.
The communiqué expressed concern over the state of affairs of the party in Rivers State and called for intensified efforts to find lasting solution to the issues and asked the party National Working Committee (NWC) to urgently summon a meeting comprising of the NWC, PDP Governors’ Forum, Leadership of PDP National Assembly Caucus and BoT Special Committee to resolve the issues.
The 16-point communiqué, which was read by the BoT Chairman, Sen. Adolphus Wabara, also expressed serious concerns over the worsening economic hardship, acute food crisis and general sense of misery, despondency, uncertainty and hopelessness in the country occasioned by the anti-people policies of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration
It demanded that the APC administration immediately review its policies and take immediate steps to ensure the reduction in the price of fuel, make key investments towards food production, revamp our manufacturing sector to stimulate employment opportunities and mitigate the suffering of Nigerians.
It rejected what it called “the brazen rigging of the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State by the APC in connivance with INEC and some compromised Police operatives.
“The BoT insists that from the votes cast at the polling Units, it is clear that the PDP and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo won the election. The PDP will take every legitimate step to ensure the recovery of the mandate freely given to our Party by the people of Edo State,” the communiqué said.
It urged Nigerians to resist any plan by the APC to rig the November 16, 2024 Governorship election in Ondo State, saying that the PDP is in good position to win the election and should not allow anybody to manipulate the election against the party.
“The BoT charges all organs, leaders, critical stakeholders and members of the PDP across board to remain united and committed, especially recognizing that the PDP is the only beacon of hope for millions of Nigerians. The PDP must therefore remain strong, united and true to the principles upon which it was founded,” the communiqué said.

House of Reps Seeks 90-Day Fuel Reserve for Nigeria by 2027
From Rabiu Sanusi, Kano
The House of Representatives has backed plans to increase Nigeria’s strategic petroleum reserve from 20 days to 90 days by 2027 in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s fuel security and ensuring a more reliable supply of petroleum products.
Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu, disclosed this in Abuja during a technical briefing, where the committee also passed a vote of confidence in the administration of President Bola Tinubu over its efforts to secure the nation’s petroleum pipelines.
Ikeagwuonu said the proposed expansion of the strategic reserve would be supported by sustained domestic petroleum supply, reducing the country’s vulnerability to supply disruptions.
The committee further reported that contributions from local refineries to Nigeria’s national petrol supply had increased by more than 75 per cent, with the country recording over 25 days of supply sufficiency and no reported shortfalls so far.
The development, according to the committee’s briefing, highlights the growing role of domestic refining in supporting the nation’s energy security.
In a related development, the committee established two subcommittees to investigate separate petitions concerning gas distribution licences issued by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and allegations of abuse of office against Mumuni Dagazau, Executive Vice President, Downstream of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited).
The proposed 90-day reserve target represents a significant policy ambition for Nigeria petroleum sector as the country seeks to strengthen supply resilience, improve energy security and reduce exposure to disruptions in fuel distribution.
The outcome of the planned investigations and progress towards the 2027 reserve target will remain important issues for the downstream petroleum industry.
