PDP Vows Not to Change Its Stand on Defected Rivers Lawmakers

By Johnson Eyiangho, Abuja
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed that nothing will make it change its position on the vacation of seats by former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who defected from it to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party also said that it is not under pressure from any quarters to compromise its position in court wherein it had already clearly stated that the former lawmakers are no longer members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The PDP’s position is contained in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, on Thursday.
The lawmakers on December 11, 2023 publicly announced their defection from the PDP to the APC.
The statement refuted a report in a section of the social media claiming that there are plots to compromise the PDP’s position and provide an unattainable lifeline to the former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to return to their seats which they have constitutionally vacated.
“Our party therefore stands by its position that the affected members have since lost their seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly having arrogantly committed an unpardonable constitutional breach.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP in its Counter Claim by its National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade SAN in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1681/2023 filed at the Federal High Court Abuja stated clearly that the former Rivers State lawmakers “are no longer members of the Rivers State House of Assembly from December 11, 2023 when they publicly announced their defection from the PDP to the APC,” it said.
The statement added, “For emphasis the PDP in the said Suit seeks among others the following Declaration/Orders against the former Rivers State lawmakers.
“A declaration that by provisions of Section 109 (1)(g) of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the seats of the plaintiffs have been vacant since 11th December 2023 when the plaintiffs announced their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“A declaration that the plaintiffs are no longer members of the Rivers State House of Assembly having defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on 11th December 2023.
“An order directing the first defendant (INEC) to conduct bye-elections in the respective constituencies of the plaintiffs in compliance with the provisions of the laws.
“An order of perpetual injunction restraining the plaintiffs from parading themselves and/or further parading themselves or from performing or further performing the functions and duties of members of Rivers State House of Assembly.”
The PDP said there are a plethora of judicial decisions from the highest court in the country in support of the position taken by it.

Flood Control: Bayelsa Urges Residents to Complement Govt’s Efforts

From Mike Tayese, Yenagoa
Following the flood alert issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has urged residents of the state not to panic but rather cooperate with the government in taking proactive measures to mitigate the effects of flooding.
Ewhrudjakpo made the call recently during a meeting with the Ministry of Environment, the State Flood Control Directorate, the Environmental Sanitation Authority, Chairmen of local government areas and rural development authorities at his office in Government House, Yenagoa. The Deputy Governor assured that there would be less impact of flooding in the state because of the steps the government is taking to address the menace. He, however, urged the ministries of environment and information, the Flood Control Directorate and other relevant agencies not to rest on their oars but rather intensify efforts including embarking on sensitization campaigns on proper refuse disposal and clearing of blocked drainages.Senator Ewhrudjakpo equally charged the flood control directorate to extend their operations to areas that are heavily impacted every year such as Biseni and Tombia in Yenagoa Local Government Area and Obirigbene in Ekeremor LGA.He equally directed all relevant MDAs to work together to ensure that identified higher grounds in flood prone communities are sand-filled and made habitable in the event of any devastating flooding. His words: “The Commissioner for Information, Strategy and Orientation, Environmental Sanitation Authority and Flood Control Directorate should carry out sensitization programmes on the impending flood.”They should also enlighten our people in rural areas using town criers because we really need to adequately inform our people on the need to stay safe. The Directorate should not pay attention to Yenagoa, the state capital alone.”There is a need to identify higher grounds in places that are flood prone like Biseni and Obrigbene communities so that flood victims could relocate there for safety”.In his remarks, the Commissioner for Environment, Hon Ben Ololo, said in the last couple of weeks, his ministry and the Flood Directorate Control made collaborative efforts in clearing drainages and canals.According to him, more funding and machinery will be required to open up more drainage to reduce the impact of the natural disaster of flooding and erosion. In their separate contributions, the Director General, Bayelsa State Flood and Erosion Control Directorate, Chief Omuso Wilson Omuso and the Mayor of Yenagoa City, Bulodisiye Ndiwari, confirmed that the people of Biseni had donated about 15 hectares of land for government to develop as a relief camp for flood victims.
