PDP’s Decision On Zoning Sacrosanct, Says Gov Diri

FROM TAYESE Mike, Yenagoa,Bayelsa State

Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has said the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to throw open the contest for its presidential ticket is sacrosanct as it was done in the overriding interest of the party.

Governor Diri explained that although he is a strong proponent of zoning and rotation of the presidency to the South of the country, he accepted the decision in good fate as a loyal party member.

The Bayelsa helmsman spoke on Friday when former Vice President and a PDP presidential aspirant, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, visited him at the Government House, Yenagoa.

A press release by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr.

Daniel Alabrah, quoted him as saying that no individual political ambition should be allowed to disorganise and disorientate the party.

He said: “I am one of the strong proponents of power rotation and zoning and I still believe that power should rotate to the southern part of Nigeria.”However, our party has taken a decision and there is nobody that is greater than the party. As a party member, I cannot stand above our party. I am carefully choosing my words as an umpire because I am holding a very sensitive position as deputy chairman of one of the electoral committees.

“Governor Diri noted that Bayelsa will always work for the unity of the country and against any attempt to disintegrate it.He stressed that the corporate existence of Nigeria would be the guiding principle in choosing a PDP presidential candidate at the party’s convention this month.

“Bayelsa, at the nick of time, will first of all put Nigeria into consideration. Bayelsa will not be part of those that will support the break up of Nigeria. Instead, it will as a matter of fact be part of the writing of history in making Nigeria great.

“Senator Diri, who described Alhaji Abubakar as one of the strong contenders for the party’s presidential ticket, noted that the PDP was more interested in wresting political power from what he described as “the rudderless, directionless and failed government of the All Progressives Congress. “Diri urged the party to put its best foot forward and that the people would support whoever had the capacity to rescue Nigeria.

“Nigeria is moving, as those on the other side said, from top to bottom. The only party that can raise the country from bottom to top is no other than the PDP.”

Acknowledging Abubakar’s contributions to national development, the governor noted that his aspiration was in line with that of the Ijaw ethnic nationality where restructuring and resource ownership were paramount.”The things that hold us together have to do with justice and equity.

Wherever there is no justice and equity, there will certainly be insecurity, conflict and crises, and that is what Nigeria is going through.”Speaking earlier, Alhaji Abubakar stressed that the PDP must put its best candidate forward in order to wrest power back from the APC.

The former vice president called on the party to brace up and be united for the sake of Nigeria, emphasising that the PDP cannot afford to be in opposition again from 2023.

He described himself as one of the proponents of restructuring, a struggle he said he stood for while in office, noting that devolution of more powers and resources must go to the states for economic survival.

The presidential hopeful asserted that the country needed a leadership that can confront the challenges bedeviling the nation’s battered image head on.

He emphasised that his government would replicate same by addressing the division brought upon the country by the APC-led federal government, adding that Nigeria must be at peace before governance can take shape.

Atiku said: “We must put our best forward. Meaning who we believe can bring us back to power. It is very important.“We must brace up as a political party. We must unite to return our political party back to power. We cannot afford to be in opposition again.

“There must be peace and unity before this country can be governed. That is why I emphasise unity and the need to unify the country. What I mean is that, I am going to give every part, every section, religion and faith a sense of belonging in this country.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 general election in Nasarawa State, Dr. David Ombugadu, has said he is duty-bound to abide by party decision regarding the contest for the PDP National Chairmanship position, but maintained he was yet to throw his hat into the ring.

Ombugadu said, “In view of the fact that I have a lot to offer and have always responded to clarion calls by our people to serve in different capacities, I’ll like to inform the general public that though my hat is not in the ring, I have heard your voices loud and clear but I have not succumbed yet to the calls to run for the position of National Chairman of our party.
”Ombugadu, who made his position known in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Monday, acknowledged calls for him to be given responsibility by the party at the national level. The PDP is expected to hold its 98th National Executive Committee (NEC) on Thursday, April 18, where the issue of replacement of the party’s Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Damagum, who stepped in over one year ago after the PDP National Chair, Dr. Iyorcha Ayu, stepped aside following a court order are among other issues that will be discussed. The issue of whether or not to replace Damagum has further brought the rivalry and division between the PDP Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Election, former Vice-president Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor, Nysom Wike, who led other four governors to work against Atiku.Others whose names have featured to replace Damagum are former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan and former Niger State Governor, Aliyu BabangidaAccording to Ombugadu, who represented Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon/ Wamba Federal Constituency from 2011-2019, lately, various groups of well-meaning members of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have intensified a clarion call, for me to be given a responsibility by the party at the national level.”I feel humbled that much of these calls emphasize our antecedents, especially with keen references to our creativity, stamina, innovation, the populist enthusiasm that was aroused as well as the dividends of democracy that our mandate yielded all over Nasarawa state; worthy attestations from the good people of Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon/ Wamba Federal Constituency whom I represented between 2011-2019 and the very positive impacts of our keen pursuit of the gubernatorial ticket of Nasarawa state in 2019 and 2023 remain very relevant.”Please do not feel disappointed but let me restate that when duty calls for me to undertake any other assignment for our party, I will not hesitate to serve; suffice to say that I remain loyal to our party and its leadership at all levels.”As things stand, I want to thank our leaders and party loyalists who endorsed the various calls and would urge them to keep hope alive because surely, a better future awaits our party’s current challenges. I am firmly convinced that with our unity of purpose, God Almighty will grant us good direction and eventual triumph.”He thanked the PDP BOT, NWC, NEC, state governors and state chapters, LGA and ward level members as well as all exco members of the PDP across the nation, especially the Nasarawa state PDP “for consistently standing with us with such remarkable focus towards achieving victory”.

Rep. Leke Abejide, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the Nov. 11 Kogi governorship election, has urged the people to support Gov. Usman Ododo toward taking the state to a greater height.
Abejide, who represents Yagba Federal Constituency, at the National Assembly said this when he addressed some supporters in Lokoja on Monday .

“Politics is over since Ododo won the election and what is left for us as citizens is to support and join hands with his administration in building a secure and prosperous Kogi.

“Today, I’m calling on all Kogi indigenes to shun politics for now and support the government to achieve progress on all fronts, more so that the election was freely won.

“There is time for politics and time for governance. The time for politics is over, what is left is governance that can put smiles on people’s faces.
“We have had our election and a winner has emerged. I still find it surprising that some people are still working to pull down the government because of election that was freely won, with the people’s voice heard loud and clear, ” he said.
Abejide urged those who contested the election with Ododo, to put behind the election and give the governor the needed support to succeed.
“Let’s give the governor the desired support to work for the good of the generality of the people of zkogi,” Abejide said. (NAN)
