Presidency is not the Problem of the South East—Dan Ulasi
By Jude Opara, Abuja
As the conversation about the possibility of having a Nigerian president from the South East emerging in 2023, a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra state, Chief Dan Ulasi has declared that the greatest problem of the region is not producing the next president of the country.
Ulasi who spoke yesterday during a television programme monitored in Abuja said what should be more paramount to the Igbo nation is the restoration of peace and order in the region which he said has been taken over by the military.
The elder statesman also took a swipe at the governors of the South East saying they are having leadership and credibility question which is why they tend to serve interests that are against their people.
According to him, if the governors of the region and their counterparts from the neighbouring South South region decide to demand for a better dealing for the old Eastern region, the presidency will surely listen to them.
He also said the South East will ensure that with the success of the Anambra state governorship election, the zone will also have “reasonable men to occupy the other four government houses in the region”.
On the unity of the country, Ulasi said there can never be unity without love. He further accused the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari of running the nation as if the South East is not part of the country.
“If we don’t remove hatred, there can never be national unity. The Igbo have demonstrated enough fate in the country; they have developed every part of the country by buying land and building houses. Many people from other parts of the country are stereotyping the South East since after the civil war.”
Ulasi equally admonished Nigerians that presidency should not be about where somebody comes from but on what the person can offer, even as he advised the South East to first rebuild their region and when the times comes, the rest of Nigeria will come begging them to come and replicate what they have done in the region at the centre.
