The House of Representatives yesterday resolved to nullify the purported election of the Edo State House of Assembly principal officers, citing “improper inauguration.”
The resolutions followed a unanimous adoption of a “Report of the House ad-hoc committee on the need for intervention in the Edo State House of Assembly crisis,” chaired by Abdulrazak Namdas.
Consequently, the lawmakers directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, and the Director General of the Department of State Services, Mustapha Bichi, to shut down the State Assembly to avoid alleged intimidation of some members-elect.
Adopting the recommendations therein, the House urged Governor Godwin Obaseki to publicly issue fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the State Assembly within one week, in line with the provisions of section 105(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The House further warned that the “National Assembly would invoke Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution and take over the Edo State House of Assembly,” if the recommendations were not heeded.
The House of Representatives had last week set up a seven-man ad hoc committee to intervene on the affairs of the “crisis-ridden Edo State House of Assembly.”
The committee chaired by Abdulrazak Namdas (APC, Adamawa) was constituted following a motion for urgent need to intervene on the affairs of the state assembly by Julius Ihonvbere and Peter Akpatason (both APC, Edo).
The ad hoc committee was mandated to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the crisis tearing the state assembly apart, and then seek ways for amicable resolution and proper inauguration in line with the provisions of extant laws.
The lawmakers, while leading debate on the motion, had said the National Assembly’s intervention was in line with Section 11 (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
NNPP Denies Alliance with PDP
By Solomon Okoliko, Abuja
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissociated itself from the story making the rounds and credited to the Secretary of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Engr. Buba Galadima that the party may go into alliance with the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 general election.
The NNPP in a press statement signed by the Publicity Secretary, Dr. Agbo Major said there is no iota of truth in the statement because the party is not thinking of going into any alliance with any other political party.

The statement which was also made available to DAILY ASSET added; “As a mass movement, the NNPP welcomes electoral alliances from like-minded political parties in our quest to rescue our great country but insists that any such arrangement must be the one that would see them joining us to deliver our presidential candidate Engr.Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and never the other way round.”
The statement also reads; “That the said report is a figment of the imagination of those who engineered it and we see it as antics of mischief makers and propagandists due to the towering profile of our candidate after the series of town hall meetings held so far.”
“The party roundly dismissed this mischievous report that has created unease amongst our teeming members and followers.”
