Residents React to FCTA’s Clampdown on “One-chance” Operators

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have reacted to the ongoing efforts by the FCT Administration to rid the city of “one-chance” operators.

Some residents commended the ongoing raid on one-chance operators, illegal motor parks, and motorists engaged in illegal parking around the city.

One of the residents, Aminu Usman, told DAILY ASSET, that the initiative was “welcome development”, and stressed that the efforts would ensure the safety of public transportation within the city.

Usman disclosed that he was once a victim of a one-chance operator when he first came into the city, explaining that the operator collected N3, 000 from him for a trip of N300.

“One of my friends was also a victim when he entered a taxi from Gwarinpa to AYA, only for the operator to take him somewhere else and collect all his valuables.

“This initiative will significantly address the menace of one-chance operators and encourage residents to board taxis at designated motor parks where they can make complaints when they are shortchanged,” he said.

Also, Mrs. Josephine Michael, a resident of Life Camp, Abuja, said that the efforts to rid the city of one-chance operators would make residents feel safe and secure.

“I am always afraid whenever I want to board a vehicle, particularly at night in the city because I do not want to enter the wrong taxi and end up with one chance.

“I really commend the FCTA for taking the bold step to ensure that residents feel safe whenever they need to take a taxi,” she said.

Secretary, Command and Control, FCTA Taskforce, Peter Olumuji, enforcing sanity in the city, said that the task force has in the last few weeks been clamping down on illegal motor parks.

According to Olumuji, the “one-chance” operators operate discreetly among motorists operating in illegal motor parks.

“We realized that when we dislodged illegal motor parks, the operations of one-chance syndicates will significantly reduce.

“This is because most of the one-chance activities are done through unpainted taxis operating in illegal motor parks, and that is why we have been going after them.”

He advised residents against boarding unpainted taxis in undesignated motor parks so as not to become victims.

“To the one-chance operators, the clampdown is a continued exercise. We will not allow you to breathe until you suffocate and leave the city,” he said.

On her part, the Head of Operations, Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Mrs. Deborah Osho, said that over 30 vehicles were impounded for illegal parking and operating in illegal motor parks.

Osho said that more than 100 vehicles have been impounded so far since Operation Clean Abuja began some weeks ago.

“Everyone should obey the law. There are designated parking spaces for the motoring public and designated motor parks for commercial vehicles; use them or we will arrest you,” she said.

The vehicles were impounded around Area 1, Area 10, Area 11, AYA bus stop, and Banex Junction, among others.

The task force team comprises the Nigerian Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Department of State Security, Immigration Service, Correctional Service, and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Others are DRTS, Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Social Development Secretariat, and other relevant agencies in the FCT.

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Wednesday sentenced a man, Abubakar Sani, to one year imprisonment for defrauding Lotus  bank of N16.7 million.

Justice Olubusola Okunuga convicted Sani following his guilty plea to an amended one-count charge of being in possession of an item reasonably suspected to have been stolen.

The charge was preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

While delivering the judgment, Okunuga said she considered that the convict was a first-time offender and did not waste the time of the court.

“Having pleaded guilty to the amended information and admitted to the review of facts and exhibits tendered by the prosecutor, the defendant is hereby convicted and sentenced to one year imprisonment,” she said.

The judge gave the convict an option of  one million naira fine.

She also ordered the convict to forfeit the money found in his Access and Keystone Bank accounts to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Earlier, the EFCC counsel, Mr Fanen Anum, reviewed the facts of the case.

He said that in July 2024, the commission received a petition from Lotus Bank alleging fraudulent acts from about 718 customers who took undue advantage of the malfunctioning of the bank’s E-bill pay platform to make fraudulent and illegal transfers.

Anum said the bank lost N1.1 billion to the multiple transfers to other financial institutions, exceeding the balances in their respective accounts.

The prosecutor submitted that the defendant benefited N16.7 million, some of which he transferred to his brother’s Accra Bank account.

“My Lord, the sum of N4,182,406.54 was traced to Access Bank account number 1623542076 belonging to Usman Sani, the defendant’s elder brother.

Also, N1,099,485.18 was traced to the defendant’s Keystone Bank account number 6038086328, which was frozen during the investigation,” Anum said.

The prosecutor further tendered in evidence the extrajudicial statement of the defendant, the Access bank statement of his elder brother, and the Keystone bank account statement of the defendant, as exhibits to support his review of facts.

The documents were admitted as evidence following no objections from the defence.

According to EFCC, the offence contravene Section 329 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
