Sen. Buba Pays UTME Fees for 350 Science Students in His Constituency

Sen. Shehu Buba, representing Bauchi South at the Senate, has paid 2023/2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) fees for no fewer than 350 Science students in his constituency.

Mr Mohammed Dahiru, the Senator’s Programmes Supervisor, said in Bauchi on Monday, that in addition, all the beneficiaries will also be sponsored by the Senator in any university of their choice within the country.

Dahiru added that the Senator urged the beneficiaries to be more serious and read well in order to pass their exams.

Some students who are the beneficiaries of the gesture commended Sen. Buba for paying their fees.

They told newsmen in Bauchi, that the gesture had relieved their parents of the burden to pay for their UTME fees as they kept struggling to put food on their tables.

Jabir Khalid, one of the beneficiaries admitted that his parents couldn’t pay his examination fees because they had no money.

He extended his gratitude to the senator, adding that Buba also organised UTME lessons for them so that they could pass the examinations.

“Sen. Buba came to my rescue and paid for me and many other students. And I shall be writing my exam on April 19,” he said.

Similarly, another beneficiary, Khadija Hassan, who was elated by the gesture, said her parents tried and paid for the first UTME she wrote but couldn’t raise money for this second one.

“I want to call on the senator to continue with his good deeds,” she said.

Also, Abubakar Ibrahim, commended  the senator for paying for their UTME fees in this difficult time when things are hard especially for the poor masses.

“Some politicians don’t care about people’s education, not minding if you can afford to go to school or not.

“However, Senator Buba has shown us that he cares about our education to the extent of paying our UTME fees and I am among the lucky beneficiaries.”

“I also wrote the JAMB mock examination which I passed. The main examination will be held on the April 19,” he said. (NAN)

UTME: Police, JAMB Warn Candidates Against Patronising Fake Websitess

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the police have warned candidates preparing for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) against patronising fake websites.

The two bodies gave the warning at a joint news conference in Abuja on Saturday.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said there were several fake websites created by unscrupulous individuals with the intention of misleading candidates.

He urged candidates to be wary of their tactics, saying the fake web sites were designed to deceive innocent candidates into providing personal details such as registration numbers, email addresses, and phone numbers.

“Both JAMB and the Nigeria Police Force condemn these fraudulent activities and hereby reiterate the readiness to safeguard the interests of candidates and maintain the integrity of the examination process.

“We urge parents, guardians, and all stakeholders to ensure that candidates print their UTME Notification Slips only from the Board’s approved website:

“Candidates can print their slips from the comfort of their homes or visit any of the over 700 accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres nationwide,” he said.

Adejobi explained that the force was familiar with the tactics employed by fraudsters, especially during the annual assessment and admission exercises.

He, therefore, said that both organisations was actively sensitising candidates and the public about these deceptive practices.

“Any candidate who visits these fake sites will definitely have unreliable information and thereby miss out in the forthcoming exams.

“Candidates are advised to print their UTME Notification Slips before Friday, 19th April, 2024, to access vital information about their examinations.

“Any website other than offering UTME slip printing services is fake and designed to defraud candidates,” he said.

He also called on candidates to beware of web sites offering ‘live’ questions and answers, as they were false and deceptive, saying that accessing such materials was prohibited.

He further said the board was partnering with the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) to address online scam-related issues seamlessly.

He assured candidates and the public of the force firm dedication to ensuring a fair and transparent examination process.

He also stressed that the Inspector General of Police had ordered the NPF-NCCC to go after scammers and fraudsters who engage in cyber related crimes and create phishing sites/portals.

On his part, the JAMB spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, pledged the Board’s commitment to continue in playing its role

He, therefore, urged candidates to ignore any unsolicited messages noting that they were from elements who aim at defrauding candidates.

The 2024 UTME is scheduled to commence on Friday, April 19, and end on April 29. (NAN)

TETFund to Upgrade NOUN Study Centres with Fibre Optics

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) will upgrade all the study centres of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) with fibre optics to transmit information and data with the speed of light.

The Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Olufemi Peters, said this during a pre-convocation news conference on Monday, ahead of its 13th convocation slated for April 13, in Abuja.

Fiber optics, or optical fiber, refers to the technology that transmits information as light pulses along a glass or plastic fiber.

Peters said the rate of technology advancement at NOUN attracted the offer from TETFund.

“Right now, our academics all over the faculties and departments have video components to assist our students and we deploy this with ease.

“And because of the manner we deploy technology, TETFund has offered to assist us with fibre optics in all our study centres across the country.

“It is a testimony to where we are in terms of technology,” Peters said.

He said that a lot of Nigerians were yet to understand how the university operates in spite of its years of existence in the country.

Peters noted that the institution had brought development to many towns and villages where the university had its study centres.

“The forthcoming convocation would be an opportunity to showcase what the institution can do with technology,” he said.

Peters said that 22,175 students in various disciplines across the country would be graduating on April 13.

He said the graduating students would join the convocation via technology from its 120 study centres across the country.

“Of this number, 15,768 are undergraduate degrees, while 6,407 are for postgraduate degrees, with the Faculty of Social Sciences producing the highest number of graduates.

“Twenty-two of these students are first class, 2,362 are PGD graduates, while 41 are Masters and six leaving the institution as PHD holders.

“This is an indication that the school is gradually moving towards establishing a more robust post graduate school,” he said.
Peters said the interesting part of the convocation would be the conferment of an investiture on the University’s new Chancellor, His Royal Majesty, Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, with Doctorate Degree, and his installation as the Chancellor.

He said that the convocation lecture would be delivered by the Vice Chancellor of Open University of Tanzania, Prof. Elifas Bisanda, with the topic: “Is western education still relevant for Africa.”

The NOUN VC said the lecture would direct Nigeria and Africa in general to areas which would be useful to citizens.

He added that the lecture would be followed by the conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees on Dr Innocent Chukwuma, the Chief Executive Officer of Innoson Motors, and Hajia Hafsatu Abdulwaheed, the first female novelist in Northern Nigeria, and an eminent activist.

“Dr Chukwuma is a well-known Nigerian entrepreneur and founder of Innoson Motors, and his creativity and commitment to local content, is one of the reasons the university considered it fit to honour him.

“The second person, Hajia Hafsatu, has dedicated her works to promoting education particularly for girls, and she believes in the transformative power of literacy to uplift communities and break the circle of poverty.

“These two awardees reflect the core values of NOUN which is entrepreneur ingenuity and knowledge-based content creativity,” Peters said.

He noted that the last time the university awarded honorary degree was in 2015.(NAN)

Northern School Proprietors, Elders’ Coalition Pass Vote of Confidence In Service Chiefs

By Laide Akinboade, Abuja

The Conference of Northern Nigeria School Proprietors (CNNSP) and the Coalition of Nothern Elders for Peace and National Unity (CNEPNU) have respectively commended the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) over the recent rescue of 137 pupils of LEA school in Kuriga, Chikum Local Government Area of Kaduna State, saying the action demonstrated the capacity and capability of the Military to deal with threats to national security and public safety.

Consequently, both groups have passed a resounding vote of confidence in the Service Chiefs, ably led by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa.

While reiterating their continuous support for the military and other security agencies, both groups called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to disregard a statement issued by a faceless group which goes by the name Arewa Coalition Against Insecurity, asking him to sack the nation’s Service Chiefs over its imaginary escalated insecurity in the country.

Recall that the group, which prides itself as a sociocultural organisation in the North, had, in a statement by one Adamu Bature yesterday, called on President Bola Tinubu to relieve the Service Chiefs of their positions due to the alleged escalating security situation in Nigeria.

The group accused the service chiefs of incompetence and complicity in the nation’s security problems.

But reacting to the group’s claim in a joint statement on Friday, the Conference of Northern Nigeria School Proprietors, a group of proprietors of private schools at all levels in Northern Nigeria and Nothern Elders for Peace and National Unity, a forum of elders in the region, dismissed the so-called Arewa group’s claim even as they described the group as a non existing one in the area.

To this end, they have told President Bola Tinubu and the nation’s Service Chiefs to disregard the statement, insisting that no such group was operational in Northern Nigeria.

Dr Hassan Ibrahim Funtua signed the joint statement for the Conference of Northern Nigeria School Proprietors, consisting of over 300 private schools in northern Nigeria and

Prof Abdulkadir Mohammed, who signed on behalf of the Coalition of Nothern Elders for Peace and National Unity as its National Coordinator.

While the proprietors’ group is made up of over 300 school owners from the Northern region of the country, the elder’s conference comprises at least 50 respected men and women whose interest is the safety of schoolchildren in the zone, as well as the offering of maximum support to government and her various institutions, especially military and security agencies.

They challenged the Arewa group to come forward with proof that the government allegedly paid N1 billion as ransom for the release of the abducted pupils.

This was as they further challenged the organisation, described as “faceless”, to a live television debate on their “baseless and desperate” allegation of conspiracy on the part of Service Chiefs.

“It is with a deep sense of patriotism that we, the Conference of Northern Nigeria School Proprietors (CNNSP) and the Coalition of Nothern Elders for Peace and National Unity (CNEPNU), issue this statement to pass a vote of confidence in our Service Chiefs, ably led by the Chief of Defence Staff, General CG Musa.

“We are aware of the rot that these service chiefs inherited upon their respective appointments by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has demonstrated the readiness to return Nigeria to the path of peace, order and good governance.

“A juxtaposition of the security situation in the country, before the appointment of the subsisting Military High Command and now, shows a significant improvement in the nation’s security architecture, with a corresponding impact on the security situation.

“That is why we view as appalling, distasteful, irresponsible, and reckless the statement purported to have been issued by a faceless group that calls itself Arewa…

“We, therefore, call on President Tinubu to disregard and ignore in its entirety the false claims made in the release, which was poorly researched and hurriedly signed, thereby confirming our position that the so-called Arewa group was procured by desperate elements seeking to undermine the government.

“Their allegation of conspiracy against the Service Chiefs is a smokescreen which, when cleared and deconstructed, will reveal President Tinubu and his Administration as the target of their venom.

“Aware of the high concentration of schools in the North, coupled with the difficult-to-access nature of some of them, we call on the authorities to firm up security arrangements around our schools by deploying more personnel.

“Conscious also of the workforce gaps in the military and other security agencies, we urge the government to undertake systematic and aggressive recruitment exercises to adequately secure vulnerable entities such as schools, internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, and worship centres.

“We insist that this Arewa group is a platform which donates itself to be used by failed politicians and interest to discredit the noble intentions and efforts of the Tinubu-led administration.

“Considering the abysmal publicity which attended the release, we are convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the group is of no consequential value and, hence, should be ignored by well-meaning, patriotic Nigerians.

“As responsible parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, we encourage our children in the North to resist the temptation of being used as cannon-fodders by those who have political scores to settle with our leaders, who are working tirelessly to better our lot as citizens of this great nation.

“Once again, we hail our Service Chiefs and our gallant and ever-combat-ready troops for rescuing our children unhurt, and we want to place it on record that this is the best and most competent set of Service Chiefs that the nation has been blessed with in recent time”, the coalition said.
