The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), otherwise known as Shi’ites, has dragged the former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu and former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai before the United Nations and European Union for alleged killing 78 members of the group in three years during peaceful protests to demand the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

IMN in a petition dated May 28th 2021 and signed by Secretary Academic Forum of the movement, Abdullahi Musa called on international organisations to take necessary actions against the perpetrators of the alleged crime against humanity.

The group said it would not stop to demand for justice in the killing of unarmed and innocent protesters who embarked on peaceful protests against the continued detention of their leader, El-Zakzaky.

The movement stated that two journalists and two police officers were also killed by the police while clamping down on the group between 2018 and 2021.

The petition, which was sighted by SaharaReporters, was addressed to the Country Representatives United Nations and Head of Delegation to Nigeria, European Union, with the names of the victims.

The sect said the killing of unarmed protesters was a clear violation of rules of engagement and therefore called on the UN and EU to invite the former security chiefs who allowed the atrocities to be committed under their watch.

The petition said, “The protest was started on Monday, January 8, 2018. Ever since then, and in less than four years, the combination of the Army and the police has with full intent murdered nearly four scores free-Zakzaky protesters, 78 to be more precise; 2 journalists, 2 police officers and many passers-by [Abuja residents].

“First, in the year 2018; on Tuesday, January 9, at Wuse Zone 6, by Sky Memorial, some FCT police officers shot Sheikh Qaseem Umar Sokoto in the leg which subsequently led to his unfortunate death on the 5th of February, 27 days after the incident. Yet, on Wednesday, January 10, they opened fire at Area 2, Garki. They killed 3 with cruelty- Aminu Ibraheem Gashua, Adamu Salis Dunari and Bilyaminu Mika’ilu. On Monday, April 16, they killed Ahmad Rufa’i at the National Human Rights Commission.

“On Saturday, October 27, during the Arbaeen Symbolic Trek and free-Zakzaky protest, officers of the Nigerian Army killed 5 people at a time at Zuba. Two days later, Monday, October 29, soldiers of the Presidential Guards Brigade, a unit of the Nigerian Army, then under Brigadier General Umar Tama Musa, waylaid Sheikh Zakzaky’s followers at Kubo checking-point, close to Mogadishu Barrack. There, they massacred 42 Ashura mourners on the march.”

The sect also called on the Nigerian authorities to release their leader and his wife, Zeenat who have been detained since December 2015 after a violent clash with the convoy of the former Chief of Army Staff in Zaria, which led to the death of many members of the group.

Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun on Monday bagged the Asiwaju of Edeland chieftaincy title, dedicating it to his late brother, Sen. Isiaka Adeleke, among others.

The governor, receiving the title in Oshogbo, said it was also dedicated to his late parents; his brother, Dr Adedeji Adeleke; and his sister, Chief Dupe Adeleke-Sanni.

He said that his late brother, Isiaka, was the former holder of the title, and the conferment on him was a further call to service.

Adeleke said that the traditional ruler of his hometown, Oba Munirudeen Lawal, the Timi Ede, conferred the title on him in recognition of his family’s contribution to the development of the town.

“I vow to be a frontliner (Asiwaju) of development and growth for Edeland and Osun state as a whole.

“I will carry the light of positive transformation from towns to villages and from cities to rural areas across our dear state,” he said.

The event attracted several dignitaries, including Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos; his Ogun counterpart, Dapo Abiodun; and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo; the acting Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Damagum; and former governor of Oyo State, Rasheed Ladoja, among others, also witnessed the conferment.

Makinde, who spoke on behalf of the governors, congratulated Adeleke on the conferment of the title.

He commended him on infrastructure development in the state.

“I thank God for my brother, Gov. Ademola Adeleke.

“When he came in as the governor of Osun State, he challenged me that he would compete with me in infrastructure development, as I was doing in Oyo State.

“When I came today, I could see work ongoing in the state.

“I am the Vice Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum and I am speaking on their behalf to congratulate you,’’ he said.

Reports says that traditional rulers at the event include the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; Soun of Ogbomosho, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; and Olowu of Kuta, Oba Makama Oyelude. (NAN)

The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), University of Abuja chapter, says the union will not call off its strike until all issues are addressed.

The branch Chairman, Dr Sylvanus Ugoh, told newsmen on Monday in Abuja that the members were not working.

“Those against the strike may possibly be beneficiaries of what the union is fighting against.

“Any member found breaking the strike will be subjected to disciplinary procedure.

According to him, 90 to 95 per cent of lecturers are on strike.

Reports says that the lecturers had, on May 2, declared an indefinite strike to draw attention of the school management to pressing issues.

One of the issues was the University’s refusal to conduct elections for the office of the Deans of Faculties and Provost, College of Health Sciences.

The Union also accused the University of carrying out promotion of some members of staff without following due process.

Other reasons for the strike, according to the union, include advertorial for the vacancy of the post of Vice Chancellor without following due process, among others.

The chairman said that ASUU had withdrawn the services of their members in the university.

“ASUU does not lock university, what ASUU did was to withdraw services members render to the university.

”What we are saying is that our members are not working,” he said.

On the issue of some lecturers indicating interest to lecture, he said that even in a national strike, some would still want to go against the action.

However, Dr Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director, Information and University Relations, said the management was not aware of any strike.

Yakoob said that many lecturers had indicated interest to teach, adding that students were also prepared to receive lectures.

A correspondent, who was at the university’s permanent site, reports that students were seen on campus to officially resume second semester academic activities.

NAN also reports that as at the time of the visit, no academic activities was seen going on in the lecture halls.

A Student, Adenike Owolabi, said students were just resuming for their second semester and hopefully lectures would commence soon.

Owolabi, who said the students were not ready for any strike, added that they had wasted so much time as a result of incessant strikes.

She, therefore, called on the school management to resolve whatever the problem was, to avoid a situation where the school may be shut down. (NAN)
