Sports in Nigeria – Going Round in Circles: Kick Starts
By Orkula Shaagee, Abuja
A 404-page book, “Sports in Nigeria – Going Round in Circles” has been described as a “masterpiece” by the lead reviewer, Tony Akiotu, GMD of Daar Communications at its Abuja launch at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Friday.
Akiotu, himself an accomplished sports journalist who has travelled to major competitions all over the world further said that the book which is coming at the right time “is a collector’s item which chronicles the wok of major Commissions and Committees and Government white papers on them, identifies the problems and proffers solutions.
“The book is well written, easy to read and free flowing” Akiotu said.
Director- General of the Governor’s Forum, Mr A. B. Okauru, who reviewed the book from the business perspective, said the book which he also described as “an excellent and outstanding work” gives sports men and women a pathway to wealth. Addressing the athletes who attended the launch, Okauru said, “this book should open your eyes to the fact that if you apply your talent, you will be richer and more famous than presidents and governors.
“Anthony Joshua who is Nigerian, Blessing Okagbare, Jay Jay Okocha are more famous than presidents, governors and senators in and outside Nigeria,” he said.
Dr Onye Achilihu, a cardiovascular surgeon who decried the penchant for Nigerian youth and sports administrators to promote foreign clubs and funding them by buying their jerseys was the chief launcher.
Kienka used the opportunity of the book launch to announce the birth of a one billion Naira Sports Performance Reward Fund (SPRF) project which will go directly to rewarding athletes who attain podium success at the Olympics, Commonwealth, All Africa Games, and the major world championships.
He said the fund will be used solely and strictly for that purpose and will, for instance, have an Olympic gold medal attracting N10 million, silver medal N7.5 and bronze N5 million. The reward for Commonwealth medals are N5 million, N3 million and N1.5 million for gold, silver and bronze respectively.
The announcement immediately attracted the donation of N1 million to kick-start the fund by an organization which wanted to be anonymous.
“I have no doubt that we shall raise the amount before the next Olympics. We just need 1000 Nigerians at home and abroad to contribute N1 million each. Some individuals and organisations can definitely do more. We are down to 999 already,” Kienka who has a passion for sports development and youth empowerment through sports said.
The author said the Fund will turn the attention of Nigerian youth massively to sports and attract private sector investment. More importantly, the fund, Kienka said, will be administered by very reputable and high ranking private sector individuals cut across the country, donor reps, official bankers, sports media and a couple of sports technocrats.
“Every kobo raised can only be applied for the purpose of rewarding the athletes and the fund will be run very transparently with updates in the public domain,” he added.

NPFL: Late Penalty Kick Helps Kwara United to Narrow Win
A penalty kick awarded late in the game on Sunday helped hosts Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin to a 1-0 win over Katsina United.
The win was in a match day 18 encounter in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), played at the Kwara Stadium Complex.
The hosts did dominate possession, especially in the first half, but they struggled and failed to convert their goal scoring chances.
Junior Aimufua and Issa Gatta posed occasional threats from the flanks but were unable to break the deadlock.
The first half saw Kwara United losing Akeem Akanni who was forced out of the game due to injury and was subsequently replaced by Sodeeq Yusuf before the break.
The second half saw relentless pressure from Kwara United in the search for a goal, but Katsina United employed delay tactics to disrupt the flow of the game.
However, substitute Ismail Gatta, who replaced Wasiu Alalade in the 53rd minute, became the hero in the 87th minute after confidently converting a penalty kick.
This was after a Katsina United defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area, sparking wild celebrations from the home crowd.
Kwara United’s Head Coach, Tunde Sanni, later insisted that his side was still a work in progress even though he praised their resilience against a tough Katsina United.
“We are proud of the young players we are using. Modern football favours youthful energy over big names,” he said.
Sanni also assured the club’s fans that Akanni’s injury was minor and he should return to action soon in about one or two weeks.
Report says that Kwara United are now in 11th place on the log with 23 points, and an outstanding home game against Enyimba International of Aba.
They will face the Shooting Stars in Ibadan on Sunday in their final match day fixture in the first stanza of the league.(NAN)

Tottenham Edge Manchester United 4-3 in Thrilling League Cup Win
Dominic Solanke’s brace helped Tottenham Hotspur edge a rip-roaring League Cup quarter-final game with Manchester United by a 4-3 win.
The win ensures that Tottenham are still in hunt of a first trophy since 2008.
Spurs were in cruise control when Solanke rifled home his second in the 54th minute to add to his first-half opener and Dejan Kulusevski’s effort 46 seconds into the second half.
Tottenham’s back-up goalkeeper Fraser Forster pressed the self-destruct button, though, as his two errors set up a nervy finale.
First Manchester United substitute Joshua Zirkzee tapped in after Forster’s pass out from the back had been intercepted before Amad Diallo blocked his clearance to make it 3-2 with 20 minutes left.
Ange Postecoglou’s men were teetering on the brink of collapse at this point, but captain Son Heung Min scored directly from a corner with two minutes left despite protestations from keeper Altay Bayindir.
It ensured Jonny Evans’ stoppage-time header was a mere consolation as Spurs march on towards the semi-finals.
The loss left Ruben Amorim to pick the bones out of the third defeat of his short tenure. (dpa/NAN)
