“The Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in Conjunction with the National Moon Sighting Committee did not receive any report confirming the sighting of the crescent of Muharram 1443AH on Sunday Aug.

8.

“This was equivalent to 29th day of Dhul-Hijjah 1442AH. Therefore, Monday, August 9, 2021, will be the 30th day of Dhul-Hijjah 1442AH.

94 Sacked Enugu College Lecturers Appeal to Gov. Mbah for Reinstatement

The 94 sacked lectures of Enugu State College of Education, Technical (ESCET), have appealed to Gov. Peter Mbah for reinstatement.

The group made the appeal in a letter to Mbah, signed by Dr Egbo Doris, Dr Njideka Frank and others, made available to newsmen on Sunday in Enugu.

In the letter  titled “A passionate appeal to reconsider staff disengagement at Enugu State College of Education (Technical) Enugu”, the group said if nothing was done, their disengagement would bring untold hardships to their families.

Mbah had in October 2023, constituted a seven-member investigative committee to probe alleged fraud and corrupt practices in the school.

According to them, they wrote to the governor as responsible and dedicated indigenes of Enugu State who were employed at  ESCET on Oct.

22, 2021.

They stated that on  Feb. 26, they  received the distressing news of their disengagement from service which  was communicated to them through the Acting Registrar of the school, Mr Pat Aneke.

Aneke informed them he took directives from the Government Implementation Committee, to deliver the disengagement message to the affected staff.

While appealing to Mbah for reconsideration and reinstatement, the group said: “Our dedication to the educational growth of the school has been top-notch.

“It is only our set and Alvan Ikoku College of Education Owerri, that were successful in the whole of the South East in the 2023 TETFAIR programme. We believe that the sudden termination of our employment does not accurately reflect our contributions.

“It was only this set, disengaged since the establishment of ESCET, that was able to attract international education grant for further research work to continue improving on the quality of education in Nigeria.

They disclosed that they were  special hybrid and highly intellectual academicians that had been working for the institution on how to increase Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) through different research engagement for the school before their disengagement.

According to the group, upon their  employment, they  remained dedicated and committed to the growth of the college and never deterred from discharging their duties in spite of irregular payment of staff salary.

“It is equally sad to state that two of our colleagues lost their pregnancies at their  duty post, right inside the examination hall while selflessly and diligently serving the institution as invigilators.

“May the blood of those innocent babies be enough atonement and cry for justice on behalf of all the disengaged staff.”

“It is quite unfortunate that both the Investigation and Implementation Committees set up to look into the various challenges of the ESCET, never deemed it fit to have a word or two with any of us.

“We strongly believe that the challenges of the institution could be tackled without depleting the already understaffed institution.

“After our employment, proper documentation was done and regularization, through verification of our documents for relevance and our names were duly added in ESCET Payroll.”

They equally alleged that they were being owed cumulatively to the tune of 13 months of salary arrears and  “you can imagine the excruciating pain, and rude shock this sad news triggered on us.

“We are those fathers, mothers, aunties, uncles, sisters, brothers, who have found out excuses explaining to our children, and families, why lunch and dinner are no longer available on the table.” (NAN)

Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi, has appealed to the Federal Government to direct the contractor handling the construction of a Smart Secondary School to resume work and ensure completion of the project in the state.

Idris made the plea while on an inspection tour of some ongoing projects in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday.

“I am appealing to the federal government to direct the contractor handling the construction of the smart secondary school to resume to the site and ensure its completion within the stipulated time frame of contractual agreement,” he pleaded.

Idris, while commending the federal government for choosing the state for the project, described the project as another way of promoting education system.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the inspection, the Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Tanko-Sununu, assured the governor that the present administration was working hard to ensure that the contractor resumes work and completes the project.

Tanko-Sununu, who expressed dismay over the level of work, recalled that the project was awarded last year by the immediate past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He assured that the present administration under the watch of President Bola Tinubu was working hard to ensure completion of the school.

The minister said the project was part of the federal government’s intervention through the Universal Basic Education Programme, adding that all the 36 states of the federation benefited from it.

“Of the total projects, 34 states have already taken delivery of theirs, except Kebbi and Bayelsa States.

“Let me use this medium to assure the governor that I will do everything possible to bring back the contractor to the site and ensure completion of the the work alongside other federal government ongoing projects in the state,” he assured. (NAN)

Current Economic Hardships didn’t Start from Tinubu’s Administration — Umahi

Published

Minister of Works, Chief David Umahi, says the present economic hardships in the country did not start from President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Umahi made the declaration on Sunday at his hometown Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi while addressing newsmen.

He attributed the hardships to several preceding factors.

The minister said that preceding administrations had build-ups of farmers and herders conflicts among other forms of insecurity which adversely affected food production.

“I was the Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC) committee on resolving farmers and herders conflicts and I settled such conflicts in several states, especially in the north.

“Such settlements yielded fruits but the problem had dealt a lot of blow on food production with farmers prevented from going to their farms.”

Umahi noted that with such underlying developments, no one should expect the Tinubu’s administration to fix such challenges within nine months.

“It is not possible to solve the problems within such period in office and we should ask ourselves how to solve them.

“President Tinubu is fortunately tackling the problems with his policies and when something has gotten to the climax, you don’t expect to dissolve it over night,” he said.

He noted that the south-east geo-political zone for instance was presently free from incessant farmers and herders conflict, showing that President Tinubu had solved its major problem.

“That is why we should not join the protests on economic hardship because if you remove the gunmen issue, the zone will be safe and farmers can work,” he said.

Umahi also commended President Tinubu for directing cement manufacturers to revert to the old prices of the product in further cushioning effects of the hardship.

“The president is a compassionate leader who feels the sufferings of his people and we expect the manufacturers to comply with the presidential directive.

“I also commend my successor Gov. Francis Nwifuru for taking proactive steps to revive the Nigeria Cement (NIGERCEM) Company, Nkalagu as it should not continue being moribund.” (NAN)
