The Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has commenced a two-day training programme to equip education officers with skills to promote climate change education and environmental sustainability in schools.

The State-Level Step-Down Training on the Greening Schools and Climate Change Initiative (GSCCI), holding from September 8 to 9, 2026, is being attended by Desk Officers from the 25 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), as well as Special Programmes and Teachers’ Professional Development officers.

The training is taking place at the SUBEB headquarters in Asaba and is designed to build participants’ capacity to integrate climate change education into the basic education system.

Declaring the training open, the Executive Chairman of Delta SUBEB, Hon. Samuel Mariere, represented by a member of the Board, Comrade Onome Akpoghere, described climate change as a major global challenge affecting health, education, agriculture and sustainable development.

Mariere stressed the need for collective action against environmental pollution, ozone layer depletion and global warming, noting that schools have an important role in raising environmentally responsible citizens.

He urged participants to promote waste recycling, tree planting and environmental conservation, while expressing concern over emissions from generators and other pollutants.

The SUBEB chairman said the training would provide participants with practical knowledge and skills to promote climate change education and greener schools and communities.

The State Coordinator of UBEC, Sharon Dafiluelo, who conveyed the greetings of the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Aisha Garba, said UBEC was committed to ensuring that knowledge gained from the training translated into practical action in schools.

She disclosed that monitoring teams would visit schools to assess the implementation of the initiative and ensure that its objectives were achieved.

The Owelle of Asaba and Founder of the Green Energy Foundation, Chief Chukwuemeka Chukwurah, commended Delta SUBEB for taking climate change education to the grassroots.

Chukwurah described the initiative as an investment in future generations and urged participants to move beyond theory by promoting practical activities such as tree planting, waste management and environmental conservation.

He said greenhouse gas emissions from industrial activities contribute to global warming, flooding, melting ice caps and other environmental challenges, urging the planting of economically beneficial trees to support both the environment and livelihoods.

In her address, the Director of Special Programmes, Sandra Ogini, described the training as an important step towards creating greener, healthier and more sustainable school environments.

Ogini appreciated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his support for education and commended Mariere for his commitment to advancing basic education in Delta State.

The lead facilitator, Dr. Babalola Adeniyi of the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, identified erosion, flooding, gas flaring, deforestation, bush burning and unsustainable agricultural practices as major contributors to environmental degradation and climate change.

He called for sustainable farming, waste recycling, afforestation and increased environmental awareness, explaining that trees help reduce greenhouse gases by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.

Adeniyi also explained the difference between weather and climate, noting that while weather refers to short-term atmospheric conditions, climate represents long-term weather patterns. He said the effects of climate change could be reduced through mitigation and adaptation measures.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Director of Teachers’ Professional Development, Mary Eyagomare, urged participants to cascade the knowledge gained to teachers and learners, stressing that climate change education should become an integral part of teaching and learning.

She added that monitoring would be carried out to ensure effective implementation, while participants are expected to develop strategies for integrating climate change education across subjects and sustaining green initiatives in schools throughout Delta State.

The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Ajao Saka Adewale, in line with the exemplary vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has organised a one-day capacity-building programme for personnel on proactive cum intelligence-driven policing, held on Wednesday, 9th September, 2026.

The programme, themed “Capacity Building for Proactive Cum Intelligence-Gathering Policing in Littoral Areas,” brought together Divisional Police Officers and other ranks to strengthen their capacity for effective intelligence gathering, assessment and utilisation, particularly in Bayelsa’s challenging littoral environment.

Speaking at the programme, the Commissioner of Police, extolled the IGP for his foresight on proactive, intelligence-led and community-oriented policing.

He noted that the initiative was designed to translate this vision into practical and operational capabilities within the Command.

The CP stressed the need for personnel to move beyond reactive policing by identifying threats early, obtaining credible intelligence and taking preventive action before crimes escalate.

He further charged participants to translate the knowledge gained into action, directing that the 30-day action plans developed from the training should yield measurable improvements in intelligence gathering, crime prevention and operational effectiveness.

Ajao reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to continuous capacity development and community-focused policing to safeguard lives and property across Bayelsa State.

ManRoy Global Services Limited, in partnership with Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, has donated an 18-seater bus to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, to enhance the mobility of its members.

The donation was made at ManRoy’s office along the DSC Expressway in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, in the presence of the Ovie of Great Idjerhe Kingdom, HRM King Monday Obukohwo Whiskey.

Speaking during the presentation, the Managing Director of ManRoy Global Services, Mr.

Okorie said the bus was provided to support journalists in the discharge of their professional responsibilities, noting that the media plays a vital role in disseminating information in society.

He said, “You know in society, without journalism, information will not be disseminated. So, you are an important part of society and without you there is no society.”

The Manager of Administration, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, Princess Daisy Jaja, said the donation was in line with the company’s commitment to supporting mobility, particularly during events and official assignments.

Jaja said the bus would make it easier for members of the chapel to travel together rather than using separate vehicles for assignments.

She noted that Tantita had maintained a cordial relationship with the NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, describing the donation as another demonstration of the partnership.

According to her, “It’s always very hard to get pockets of people in different vehicles. But if they are in their bus, they will go together and come back together.”

Jaja also commended ManRoy for initiating the gesture, praying that the bus would serve its intended purpose and that the cost of fuelling it would not become a burden.

The Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom, HRM King Monday Obukohwo Whiskey, PhD, thanked ManRoy Global Services and Tantita Security Services for the donation.

The monarch urged both organisations to sustain their existing relationship and continue to explore areas of collaboration with the NUJ.

In his response, the Chairman of the NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, Okakuro Akpokona Omafuaire, Esq., expressed appreciation to the management of ManRoy for the gesture.

Omafuaire described journalists as campaigners who use their platforms to promote issues and causes, adding that the donation would further enhance the chapel’s mobility and visibility.

He said the bus would enable members to move together for assignments and events, adding that its presence would also draw attention to the partnership between the NUJ and its corporate partners.

“We are happy you have increased our propensity to do this campaign. Driving that vehicle alone everywhere is a campaign. We will drive it and use it to campaign everywhere,” he said.

The NUJ chairman expressed gratitude to both ManRoy and Tantita for supporting the chapel, saying the gesture was unprecedented in the history of the union.

Omafuaire also appealed to the management of ManRoy to continue to open its doors to the NUJ for further collaboration and partnership.

Earlier, Silver Ofugara welcomed members of the NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel and the traditional ruler to ManRoy’s office for the presentation ceremony.
