The Biggest Industry in My State is Civil Service – Ishaku

Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku

From Victor Gai, Jalingo

Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, has stated that the civil service is the biggest industry in the state hence it was impossible for him to retrench workers considering the impact such action would have on their dependents and the economy of the state.

Gov.

Ishaku while responding to questions on Channels TV Politics Today, late Wednesday, spoke on the oil exploration on the Benue trough and Chad basin, which he regretted had been hindered by insecurity in the region.

According to him, Taraba state and the north-east region had low internally generated revenue compared to other states due to insecurity and that the exploration of the newly found oil in the region could solve the problem.

“Now if you come to a rural state like mine, you are talking of IGR. The biggest factory in my state is the civil service, that is why I cannot retrench even one person, because every one person has about ten to fifteen dependents on him. So I cannot just wake up one night and sack three thousand. There would be more than three thousand times ten thousand crying in the whole state.

“The money we get from the federal government, when it comes, virtually all goes to salary payment. But what I am telling you, we are working hard on our IGR. But the IGR that we would really get you out of this is if they start exploiting the oil…but luckily they have gotten oil in Gombe and Bauchi axis and even in Taraba state they have oil. It is just that they have not started drilling. So in the Benue trough, up to Chad Basin area, it is suspected that there is oil,” Ishaku stated.

The Taraba state governor, who just hosted the North-east Governor’s Forum meeting in Jalingo, also said his government was working towards exploiting the vast resources in the state. He also warned against depending on crude oil for the future as the western world which we depend on for oil revenue is planning towards alternative sources of energy.

“But the fashion of oil is already going out. I am sure in the next ten years; they would not be talking of oil in the world market. They would be talking more of gas and renewable energy. And so those who are enjoying that benefit, they better make hay while the sun shines. They better invest for their people so that when this oil dwindles…because the western world is not waiting on us, they are planning, they are already using gas cars, they are using solar powered cars. So they would not need your oil in a few years to come. We must move faster in developing things like gas, in ploughing into areas that can help us, particularly agriculture so that we do not import food. If we can do that (like I understand Venezuela is doing) it would help us that we have used the oil revenue sensibly. It would come to a time that you would not be able to bear the burden of paying their wage at some point,” Ishaku pointed.

He however regretted that insecurity was affecting the economy of the state and that the power to secure the states lies on the President who controls the security agencies.

“Everything moves around security. You need to get that. Taraba state is the largest place we can get income as IGR from tourism. But who would go to a tourist site when he knows he would not come back alive…The major problem we have in the north-east is security. If they can give us security, then we can manage the other problems. What I need from him is security because he has the wherewithal, I don’t have the army, I don’t have the police. If I have these two agencies, then you will not even tell me to go to Buhari. I should manage my state and I am doing the best I can. Just give us security, some of us would turn our states around,” Governor Ishaku added.

Head of Political Office, Embassy of the Republic of Turkiye, Muzaiffer Hakan Tok who was exchanging views with the management team of Asset Media Group in Abuja, yesterday recalled the robust diplomatic, trade and cultural relationship between Nigeria and Turkiye.

While stressing the cordial relationship existing between the two nations over time, he said there was need for media practitioners to be further enlightened about those things that were common and binding between the two nations.

He applauded the people of Nigeria and the government for the hospitality accorded Turkish nationals in the country.

Earlier, Dr. Cletus Akwaya, Proprietor of Asset Media Group, owners of the Daily Asset Newspaper and Asset Television, said the visit was to explore ways of media partnership with the embassy.

He appealed to the Turkish Embassy in Nigeria to initiate avenues for exchange of visits between journalists of the two countries to enable them to enlighten and educate the public about opportunities that abound in the country.

The diplomatic relations between the two nations started when Turkey opened an embassy in Lagos in 1962. The embassy was moved to Abuja in 2001 after Nigeria’s proclamation of Abuja as the new capital.

On the other hand, Nigeria has an embassy in Ankara, the capital of Turkey and the two countries are members of a group of eight developing nations, code named D-8.
