From Jude Dangwam, Jos

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang has called for the establishment of State Police in Nigeria following the multifaceted level of crime the country is facing which requires the decentralisation of the Police architecture in the country.

Mutfwang at the opening of the two-day North Central Geopolitical Zone constitutional review public hearing held at Crispan Hotel in Jos the Plateau State capital noted that there is the need for devolution of powers to ensure that states manage their resources and developmental priorities more efficiently.
He maintained that the public hearing affords them all an opportunity to ventilate and articulate positions which will aid the production of a document which he believes will be a catalyst towards the propulsion for the attainment of Nigeria every citizen long to see.
According to the Governor, “At this point in time of our constitutional journey, there are undoubtedly a lot of agitations regarding issues such as; self-determination by some elements within the constituent units; fiscal federalism with clamours for greater control by sub nationals over natural resources geographically occurring with their geographical territory.”State Police due to rising spate of insecurity across the country and the obvious lack of capacity for a centralized Police Force to tackle the same, State creation and adjustment of boundaries amongst others.”Permit me to highlight on the issue of insecurity and the need for State Police which has become an Elephant in the room which all acknowledge is present but are unwilling to address but which we must as responsible leaders speak about in order that silence may not be confused for that which it may not mean.”It is on record that Nigeria is bedevilled by grievous and pervasive security perturbations which hitherto were confined geographically to some zones of the Country but which has now metamorphosed and metastasized into a cancerous growth eating into the fabric of our collective union.Mutfwang reiterated that extra judicial killings and ritual killings are also on the rise across the regions while communal conflicts fuelled by age-old animosities between ethnic nationalities and most importantly, the paucity of resources exacerbated by climate change and population explosion nationwide have further aggravated these security challenges.”A typical example is the perennial and unwarranted killing of farmers by nomadic Fulani herders which is no more confined to the agriculture belts of the North Central region but has now spread too virtually every precinct in the Nation as virtually no community is spared from the seeming impunity of the Fulani herders which have now converted the entire nation into a veritable killing field especially in the last 15 years.” He statedMutfwang added, “While security takes centre stage in our context, there are several other dimensions of the constitutional alteration process that bear critical importance to us as a state and as a people.”We are equally investing in conversations around devolution of powers that can ensure states manage their resources and developmental priorities more efficiently.”Judicial Reforms that strengthen the independence, integrity, and accessibility of justice delivery systems. Legislative Reforms that remove ambiguities and modernise our laws in line with current realities.Fiscal Federalism, which would allow for fairer distribution of national revenue and empower subnational governments. Citizenship and Indigeneity, which remain sensitive issues in a diverse state like ours.Protection of Fundamental Rights and Human Dignity, which is the bedrock of constitutional democracy. Institutional Reforms, which are needed to reposition governance at every level,” he stated.

2027: ADC Urges ECOWAS to Insist on Credible Elections in Nigeria

The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Sen. David Mark, has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to insist on transparent and credible elections in Nigeria.

Mark made the call on Thursday in Abuja while receiving an ECOWAS delegation on a pre-election fact-finding mission ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ADC leadership expressed concerns over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) preparedness and commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections during the meeting with the delegation.

Mark said Nigeria’s elections were critical to West Africa’s stability and would attract global attention, emphasising the need for stakeholders to work together to ensure credible electoral outcomes.

“This is why we must all work together to ensure we get it right. You have made us understand that your mission is pursuant to the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework.

“We are quite happy with this. But the best way to prevent conflict, especially in relation to elections, is to ensure that it is free, fair and transparent,” he said.

Mark said the ADC was committed to peaceful conduct before, during and after the elections, urging ECOWAS to support efforts to ensure credible electoral processes.

“We in the ADC have committed ourselves to the highest standards of peaceful conduct before, during and after the elections. But we need ECOWAS to join us in insisting on a credible election now.

“We want the same thing: a peaceful and stable Nigeria and West Africa. This is why you must tell INEC that they must not do anything that could plunge Nigeria into a needless crisis.

“This must form part of your early warning signals,” he added.

The Head of Mission and former Vice-President of Sierra Leone, Victor Bockarie Foe, said the mission aimed to assess Nigeria’s preparedness for credible elections and the political atmosphere ahead of the polls.

Foe promised to convey the party’s concerns, alongside those of other stakeholders, to the regional body, emphasising Nigeria’s importance to peace and stability across West Africa.

Other members of the ECOWAS mission included Francess Piage Alghali, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security; Julius Fofanah Sandy, representing the ECOWAS Permanent Representatives’ Committee; and Segrine Mamadou, Head of Electoral Assistance Division.

Obi Promises Emergency Measures on Security, Corruption, Poverty

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has promised emergency measures to tackle insecurity, corruption, hunger and poverty, if elected.

Obi made the promise on Thursday during an interactive town hall meeting with a large crowd of supporters across party lines in Abakaliki.

The former Anambra governor said that Nigeria required purposeful leadership to achieve sustainable development, adding that he possessed the character, experience and capacity to lead the country.

He said that Nigeria had vast arable land and other resources that could transform its economy if properly harnessed.

According to him, the country must shift from consumption to production, particularly through agriculture and other productive sectors.

On the Federal Government’s borrowing, Obi said taking loans was not inherently wrong but became problematic when the funds were used for consumption rather than productive investments.

“It becomes wrong when the government borrows to buy a yacht, presidential plane and for consumption purposes,” he said.

He pledged that his administration would ensure transparency in public borrowing, insisting that Nigerians must know why loans were obtained and how the funds would be utilised.

On security, the presidential candidate promised to deploy modern technology and other effective measures to tackle insecurity and guarantee the safety of citizens across the country, irrespective of their locations.

Obi also vowed that anyone found guilty of corruption, including the President, would face prosecution and imprisonment in accordance with the law.

He said his vision was to build a Nigeria where citizens could achieve their aspirations through merit rather than personal connections.

“My dream is to see a Nigeria where the son of a nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody,” he added.

Obi, who expressed excitement over the turnout at the meeting, described himself as the most credible among the three leading presidential candidates.

He cited President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and himself as the leading contenders.

He urged Nigerians to participate actively in the forthcoming election and protect their votes.

“You should vote for me because I am the most credible candidate among the leading candidates for the presidency,” he said.

Obi expressed optimism that Nigeria could achieve meaningful transformation under credible leadership, pledging to provide such leadership if elected. (NAN)

Why I Chose Music over Football – Mr Eazi

Afrobeats star Mr Eazi has claimed that English club Chelsea FC wanted to sign him before they signed former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel.

Mr Eazi disclosed this during an interview on Wednesday.

The singer said both he and Mikel were linked to a possible move to Chelsea at the time, but he opted to pursue music instead.

“They were gonna sign me.

So, it was like Mikel Obi and me,” he stated.

He explained that he thought Mikel was better suited to football, while he had a future in music.

“I just thought that Mikel Obi is not; he doesn’t have talent as a musician.

But I can do that. So I let Mikel go to Chelsea,” he said.

Mr Eazi linked the decision to his philosophy in the music industry, where he sometimes steps back so others can shine.

“So with this, with the music too, I had to, like, step back, go make a couple billions and then let other people shine,” he added.

He also cited fellow singer Seyi Vibez, whom he jokingly called a great Nigerian philosopher, for popularising the phrase ‘Let your brother shine’, noting that he is comfortable allowing others to take the spotlight while focusing on his own goals.

Mikel eventually joined Chelsea in 2006 and spent 11 years at the club, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the UEFA Champions League in 2012.

Mr Eazi has since become one of Africa’s most successful music exports, with a career spanning Afrobeats hit, business ventures, and contributions to the genre’s global growth.
