USAID, Stakeholders Advocate for Establishment of Countering Trafficking in Persons Commission

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with other stakeholders in Benue State have called for immediate establishment of Countering Trafficking in Persons (CTIP) Commission to curb incessant cases of human trafficking in Benue State.
They made the call during stakeholders engagement town hall meeting for Benue South Senatorial District also known as Zone ‘C’ held at Otukpo, Otukpo Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, at the weekend.
The event was anchored by Adinya Arise Foundation and GERI with support from USAID SCALE Palladium CTIP Commission Cluster.
Speaking specifically, a traditional ruler and Och’ Otukpo, Chief John Eimnoye, said that traditional rulers in his domain were working towards strengthening local laws and formulating policy to eliminate and prohibit human trafficking in Otukpo, headquarters of Benue South Senatorial District.
He further assured that the council of chiefs will create awareness and sensitize the people of Benue South senatorial district otherwise known as Zone C, on the ills and dangers of human trafficking and child labour.
He said the traditional laws, when strengthened, will prevent, prosecute perpetrators and support survivors of human trafficking and appealed to his subjects to always provide information to authorities to enable them to curb the menace.
Eimnoye commended ACTIP Commission Cluster, USAID SCALE Palladium and all other implementing partners for holding the stakeholders’ town hall in his domain and assured that they will continue to collaborate with them in order rid Zone C out of the human trafficking menace.
Also, the caretaker Chairman for Otukpo Local Government area, Dr. Wilson Eche who was represented by his deputy, Ejembi Odeh, applauded the CTIP Commission Cluster team
He stated that the Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration is putting in place measures to curb the menace of human trafficking in the State.
He assured that his administration will collaborate with relevant stakeholders in the area to sensitize the people in the area not just to curb trafficking in the state but to bring it to a complete stop.
Earlier in her address of welcome, Coordinator, GERI, Elizabeth Jeiyol, expressed gratitude to the stakeholders and participants for their commitment towards seeking an end to human trafficking in the State.
According to her, Adinya Arise Foundation and five other cluster members made up of GERI, OSA Foundation, ECJP, NUJ and JDPC Ibadan Arch Diocese made concerted efforts to put the programme together.
Jeiyol stated that there is need for a day-to- day activities for awareness creation emphasizing that strong voices are needed to prevail on the government to hasten the establishment of a commission to against human trafficking in Benue.
She maintained that the meeting was to discuss the current state of human trafficking in the state and environs, share insights and experiences from various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, law enforcement agencies and community leaders.
“The Meeting is also to identify gaps in existing strategies and explore innovative solutions to prevent and combat human trafficking, foster stronger partnerships and coordination among stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of collective efforts and raise awareness on the dangers of human trafficking as well as stimulate local agitations for the establishment of a Countering Trafficking in Persons (CTIP) Commission in the State
“Adinya Arise Foundation is implementing the “Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement” (SCALE project) in Oyo, Benue and Taraba states of Nigeria with funding support from USAID through the Palladium.
“The project which aims at establishing the Countering Trafficking in Persons (CTIP) Commission in target states was to be implemented through cluster models”, Jeiyol said.
Some religious leaders including Alhaji Garba Grema of the Muslim community and Pastor Joseph Okoh, frowned at the incidences of trafficking and promised to take the awareness to their congregations in their various places of worship.
Other participants, leader of Catholic Women Organization (CWO) Agnes Okpe, representative of security agencies DSP Fidelia Peter, representative of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), Mary Ejeh and Agboko Francis, chairman Umogidi Crisis Management Committee (IDP camp) Otache Ajene and the youth leader Entekpa IDP, Adakole Inalegwu Daniel, all commended GERI for the meeting describing it as wake up call.
Secretary of National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW), Ismaila Abiodun expressed concerns at the rate at which children flood the park’s boarding vehicles accompanied by adults who claim to be their parents or guardians but are not.
He applauded the awareness and sensitization forum on human trafficking and further assured GERI that the Unions will be more vigilant on commuters who come to send children unaccompanied by guardians and promised to report suspicious travellers.

FRSC Deploys New Sector Commander to Benue
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Thursday, announced the deployment of Corps Commander (CC) Kehinde Dahunsi as new commander for the Benue Sector Command.
The announcement is contained in a statement by the Corps’ Public Relations Officer (PRO) SRC Ngozi Ahula, in Makurdi.
According to the statement, Dahunsi takes over from CC Steve Ayodele, who recently retired in line with the Corps’ administrative posting procedures.
She said that the formal handover ceremony took place on Dec. 10, at the sector’s command headquarters in Makurdi.
According to her, shortly after assuming duty, Dahunsi expressed gratitude to the Corps Marshal, for what he described as a significant vote of confidence.
She said that the new commander has pledged to prioritise enhanced operational efficiency, strengthen stakeholder collaboration, and intensify public enlightenment.
He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to continuous sensitisation on safe road use, strict enforcement of traffic regulations, and sustained efforts to curb road traffic crashes within the state.
According to the PRO, the outgoing sector commander also thanked officers, Special Marshals, stakeholders, and the public for their cooperation throughout his tenure.
She said that Ayodele urged them to extend the same level of support given to him, to his successor to ensure continuity and improved service delivery.
She called on transport unions, sister security agencies, the media, and the general public to work closely with the new commander to promote safer road practices in the state.

NNPCL Sets 2.80mbpd Crude Output Target by 2026

The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) has set its targeted crude oil production for 2026 at over two million barrels per day.
Head Field Operations, Eastern Corridor, Project Monitoring Office (PMO NNPCL), Akponime Omojevwhe, made the disclosure at the monthly stakeholders meeting with host communities of the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) organised by Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL) in Port Harcourt.
He also said the budget for 2026 is targeted at 2.80mbpd.
Omojevwe, who noted that currently the TNP is producing optimally, credited it to communities and stakeholders’ collaboration with PINL.
He said: “I want to sincerely appreciate all our stakeholders on this corridor because right now we can see that the TNP is green and what that means is that the products are flowing uninterrupted.
“Secondly, I want to say that our budget for 2026 is targeted at 2.80mbpd and the budget begins from 1.84mbpd while our targeted projection is 2.06mbpd. So we want to say that even as we draw closer to next year 2026, as we have come together to ensure that the projection is going up, we want to crave your indulgence, please don’t relent”.
Highlighting the importance of stakeholders and communities in securing the pipelines, the NNPCL official noted that no private security company can achieve success without their collaboration.
“The communities are a vital part of this job. So anytime we find ourselves, we must always appreciate them because the community leaders such as the chiefs, CDCs, youth presidents, women leaders, if they don’t carry out our messages to the community people, there will be nothing like green as far as the pipeline is concerned. So our message is clear, we appreciate you and always assist PINL efforts just as you have been doing,” he pleaded.
In his remark, Edi Julius, who represented the Minister of State (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri at the meeting appreciated the collaboration between the communities and PINL, stressing its impact on oil production output in the country.
“Sincerely the minister of petroleum resources appreciates what the communities are doing because without the peace from your domain, I believe production will not be up.
“Today, all of us can testify to the production level and it’s so ambitious for 2026 that we are going to hit the target of 2 million plus barrels per day production. Those things which will bring more money to the government and also, more money to PINL to be able to reach out to you,” he stated.
In his address, Dr. Akpos Mezeh, General Manager, Community and Stakeholders Relations, PINL, said the meeting gives the company the opportunity to review its progress in the fight against pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, and also celebrate, fellowship, and appreciate critical stakeholders, especially leaders of host communities for their support and commitment, which he said have sustained the economic stability of the country.
He gave a highlight of its achievements in the outgoing year to include deepening of security operations to include all oil and gas infrastructures in proximity to the TNP, expanded community and stakeholders’ inclusion, human empowerment with focus on women and students and strengthened grassroots communication with introduction the Town Crier Initiative (TCI).
He also listed sustained consistent stakeholder engagements, zero illegal bunkering and building of greater trust between PINL and host communities as other successes.
Dr. Mezeh called for increased collaboration with the host communities even as they look ahead to 2026.
“Let us continue to protect national assets, empower our people, and strengthen the prosperity of our region and nation. As we step into 2026, may our collaboration deepen, our unity strengthened, and our shared commitment to peace and progress remain unshakable,” he appealed.
The PINL official also used the medium to announce Christmas palliatives for the 215 TNP host communities.
Meanwhile, one of the host community leaders, His Majesty, King Philip Osaro Obele, called on the Federal Government to carry out more developments in the communities now that they are benefitting by way of increased revenue output from oil production.
He also commended PINL for regularly meeting with them to update the communities on its operations.

COAS Seeks Stronger Traditional Backing During Visit to Oba of Lagos

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Akiolu I, calling for deeper collaboration between the Nigerian Army and traditional institutions to enhance national security.
The visit, which took place at the Iga Idunganran Palace in Lagos, was aimed at strengthening the Army’s longstanding relationship with the Lagos traditional council.
General Shaibu expressed profound appreciation to the monarch and other Lagos Obas for their steady support to Army operations and civil–military initiatives across the state.He emphasized the significance of traditional authority in promoting peace and stability, noting that Nigeria’s customs and traditions “remain sacrosanct and must always be honoured.
” The COAS added that beyond showing gratitude, his visit was also to seek the royal father’s blessings for the Army’s ongoing and future operations.General Shaibu praised Oba Akiolu’s fatherly role and consistent goodwill toward Army formations in Lagos, describing the monarch’s support as invaluable to the institution’s operational effectiveness.
Responding, Oba Akiolu commended the Nigerian Army for its unrelenting sacrifice and professionalism in safeguarding the country. He said the military remains “a critical pillar upon which the Nigerian State stands,” adding that its personnel have contributed immensely to maintaining national stability.
The monarch applauded General Shaibu’s leadership and commitment to ensuring a secure Nigeria, before offering special prayers for lasting peace in the country and for the COAS’s successful tenure as the 25th Chief of Army Staff.
The Army said the visit highlights its continued efforts to strengthen engagement with traditional rulers, whom it described as crucial partners in the nation’s security architecture.
