From Abba Kabara, Gusau
Former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari has been indicted for alleged misappropriatin of a whopping N90.3billion from over four hundred contracts granted during his eight-year tenure.
The chairman state projects verification committee, Alhaji Muhammad Zabarma disclosed this while presenting the committee’s interim report to governor Bello Matawalle at government house on Tuesday.
Zabarma said from the indepth investigation carried out by his committee, it was evident that there were gross misappropriations, over invoicing, unlawful payments of contract bills, and even payment without actual job execution.
According to him, the committee’s findings exposed the highest degree of financial recklessness within the two offices of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and that of the state governor.
He said the committee was shocked to know the serious levels of disconnect between the office of the SSG and that of the ex-governor.
He said the office of the SSG working with that of the Head of Service is expected to squarely address the issues of relationship between political appointees and carrier civil servants and public servants, a situation which will ensure high level productivity and probity for good service delivery.
However, “it is unfortunate to discover that huge amount of fund running into billions of naira is often expended arbitrarily by the ex-governor Abubakar Yari without the knowledge of the SSG, who will only later be directed to formalise the illegality” he lamented.
The chairman said his committee had so far verified projects in nineteen ministries and some departments in which about six thousand one hundred and eighty (6180) contracts were awarded adding that the atrocities discovered by his committee were so alarming that government has to drastically do something to ensure the refund of huge amount of money into the public treasury.
In the report, the chairman revealed many evidences of financial misconduct alleged to have been perpetrated by the ex-governor Yari administration which his committee strongly recommended that a judicial committee of inquiry be constituted to ascertain the real situation and ensure the recovery of stolen funds.
After the formal submission of the document to Governor Bello Matawalle, the governor expressed commitment to implement the committee’s reprt.
He stressed the only way forward was by prescribing serious punishment as sanctions for anybody having intention to engage in similar financial misconduct.
