The Federal University of Transportation Daura, Katsina State, has matriculated its pioneer students, numbering 478, for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The matriculation ceremony, which took place at the permanent site of the university in Daura, on Saturday, was witnessed by the Minister of Transportation, Sen.

Ahmed Alkali and other dignitaries.

The minister urged the students to take advantage of the unique opportunity to acquire knowledge with all sense of diligence to contribute towards the development of the country’s economy.

He also commended the people and government of Katsina State for their generous hospitality in hosting the university.

Alkali alo extolled their commitment in supporting its effective operations, especially at the critical period of its physical development.

The minister said, “I want to personally commend the culture of consolidating previous federal and state governments’ commitments towards the university by Gov. Dikko Radda.

“After our inauguration as Ministers on Aug. 21, 2023, I led a team and visited the University in Oct. 2023.

”It was only the Vice-Chancellor that was on ground without a single academic or support staff.

“Notwithstanding this apparent challenge, I made a declaration of ensuring the take off of the University for 2023/2024 academic session.

“In furtherance of this commitment, all efforts, processes, networks, contacts and collaborations were utilised, which secured the appointment of the mentor University and  other Principal Officers.”

According to him, he was able to also secure the placement of the university on the JAMB portal.

Alkali said that this has created an easy platform for the first admission exercise and perfection of relevant documents in related offices.

In addition, he commended CCECC Nigeria Limited, the company that built the university for executing some corporate social responsibility projects.

“It may interest you to note that the University was placed on TETFund’s intervention for the execution of capital projects against the 2025 financial year.

“More significantly, President Bola Tinubu has graciously approved the financing of the University under the 2024 Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act.

“I wish these young, but prosperous University students  a successful academic life,” the minister said.

Earlier, the pioneer Vice-Chancellor (V-C) of the university, Prof. Umar Adam-Katsayal, said that JAMB has approved a total quota of 500 candidates for its admission  for the 2023/2024 academic session.

“Based on that approval, we widely advertised and called for candidates that scored the approved National Minimum Tolerable Marks for admission into Nigerian Universities during the 2023 JAMB.

”They must equally be interested in building a career in the transportation industry, hence they can apply for admission via the University’s portal.

“The call was overwhelmingly responded to with 1,250 candidates, which made us request for an addition of 10 per cent of the given quota from the JAMB, which was graciously granted.

“At the end of the screening and registration exercises, a total of 478 candidates were successfully registered across the 14 programmes and pursuing their academic activities,” he said. (NAN)

FCT primary Teachers Resume Strike over Unresolved Welfare Concerns

The Federal Capital Territory Wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) on Wednesday, resumed industrial action over unresolved welfare issues between it and the six area councils of the territory.

The union declared the strike in a communique signed by its Chairman, Mr Abdullahi Shafa, State Secretary, Mrs Margaret Jethro, and State Publicity Secretary, Ibukun Adekeye.

The strike is a continuation of earlier ones suspended by the union in October 2023 and in January 2024.

The union, in the communiqué issued in Abuja, explained that the action was the outcome of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting held on Tuesday.

It added that the SWEC had deliberated on the 14-day ultimatum given to the area councils’ chairmen to pay the teachers their entitlements.

The ultimatum expired on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

“The SWEC, therefore, resolved and directed primary school teachers in the FCT to resume the suspended strike action with effect from Wednesday, Sept. 18.

“All public primary schools in FCT should remain closed and parents are hereby advised to remain guided by this development until the union’s demands are met.

“We appeal to all teachers to remain calm and disregard any counter directives except as directed by the union,” it added.

The union identified one of the unresolved issues as non-payment of 60 per cent of the 25 months old minimum wage areas.

Other issues included non-implementation and payment of 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increase, and non-implementation and payment of 40 per cent peculiar allowance.

The union is also demanding the payment of the N35,000 wage award arrears and the implementation of the template on outstanding entitlements of teachers as agreed in 2022.

The FCT Minister had intervened and promised to pay 40 per cent of the outstanding 25 months minimum wage arrears.

As part of the resolution for suspending the strike, the six area councils were expected to pay the remaining 60 per cent of the minimum wage arrears.

The teachers acknowledged and applauded Wike for redeeming the 40 per cent pledge, and frowned at the area councils’ chairmen for failing to fulfill their part of the agreement.

Reacting to the development, Dr Hassan Sule, acting Chairman, FCT Universal Basic Education Board (FCT-UBEB), appealed to the NUT to suspend the strike.

Sule said that discussion with the chairmen of the area councils was ongoing to resolve the issues. (NAN)
