Despite Proscription, Shiites Stage Protest in Kebbi

From Haruna Aliyu Usman, Birnin – Kebbi
Despite recent proscription of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria known as Shiites, followers of Shiek Ibrahim el-Zakzaky Friday, took over major streets in the state capital Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi state capital to protest the continued detention of their leader by the Nigerian government.
A Federal High Court recently proscribed the sect following the Federal Government placed a ban on any form of gathering or protest by the members. In defiance of court order, however, hundreds of Shiites faithful staged a protest immediately after Friday prayers. The protesters, dressed in black clothes comprising of men, women and children carried flags and placards.
The procession began from the emir’s palace to Ahmadu Bello way to other major streets in Birnin Kebbi. There was however, no report of any clash with security agencies except the grid lock caused by the massive turn out of the members.
However, leaders of the protest refused to speak to the press and also refused reporters from taking pictures. A Protester who didnt want his name in print told DAILY ASSET that the protest was an “order from the above” and meant to debunk “rumours” that, they have suspended the protest to seek redress in court. He added that, protests will continue till the Shiek was released. He confirmed that same protest was conducted across the country to compel government to release their leader being unjustly held by president Buhari.
“We will sustain the protest peacefully without attacking any person or group of persons but we will never back down till our demands are met,” he said.
