A VICTORY SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY, REV. FR. DR. HYACINTH IORMEM ALIA, GOVERNOR-ELECT OF BENUE STATE, MARKING HIS VICTORY IN THE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION IN BENUE STATE, HELD ON

MARCH 18, 2023

Protocol,

My beloved fellow citizens of Benue State,I stand before you today as the duly elected Governor of Benue state.

My victory was announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a few hours ago.

The long and anxious wait for the results to be officially declared is over; we can now roll out the drums in celebration of this great victory.

I recognize what an enormous privilege and honor it is to be trusted with the government of the State especially at this time and am deeply conscious of it.

I would like to say that God does not call the qualified! He qualifies the called.

I may not be the most qualified Benue son to lead the State at this

time but the Good Lord who has called me will qualify me.

Never in my life have I seen a people express their desires and wishes so passionately as I saw from you in this election.

The volunteers who came together under various support groups; those who travelled to all nooks and crannies of our State to knock on doors; the poll watchers who stayed vigilant to ensure that our votes were counted; every one of you! You all are the true heroes of this victory, and your names will be written in gold in the annals of our State.

It has been a remarkable and historic victory for our Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). I am in no doubt at all about the enormity of the challenges that lie ahead and what this victory means in the face of these challenges.

My dear people, this victory belongs to you. It belongs to all of you who thirst for the dividends of democracy. And by this victory, the liberation we have all yearned for is at hand.

Change is coming to Benue State!! I take this opportunity to appreciate the Leader of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue state, Senator Dr George Akume, who has remained strong like the Rock of Gibraltar and guided us along the path to this happy moment.

I appreciate the State Working Committee of the Party under the leadership of the ebullient Comrade Austin Agada, as well as the other organs and critical stakeholders of the Party for their resilience and resourcefulness.(Let’s give a big round of applause to all APC members….APC!!)

I doff my hat for the most hardworking and ingenious campaign team ever assembled in the political history of Benue State led by the Director General, Rev Dr. Frederick Ikyaan. They represent the building blocks to this victory.

I am grateful for the friendship and support of my running mate, Barrister Sam Ode. He has worked so hard on the campaign trail, and I look forward to fruitful collaboration with him in Government House.

I would like to congratulate my opponents from the other parties for making it an interesting contest. BUT the anxious period of politicking is over. Now is the time to unite and face the challenges of development.

Our State, Benue, needs a total reset! Governance in our State has hit a historic low. This election is a mandate to reform and recalibrate governance in Benue.

We need all hands, all good and ready hands, to be on deck. We need men and women whom

the spoils of office cannot buy. We need all who believe that a new

Benue is possible.

I believe there is an even greater obligation on me, in fact on us all, to tell the Benue people very clearly the difficult choices and challenges that we face and how we will work our way through them.

We will clear the backlog of arrears of salaries, and pensions and

gratuities, resettle our IDPs in their ancestral homes, address persistent insecurity challenges and set the stage for a prosperous Benue.

We need to set the foundations for a strong economy. And on top of

that, we need to start building an economy of the future based on skills and talents and education and the application of technology; knowing that the forces of global competition and technology mean that we can only compete based on skills and talents. Let us unlock our wealth!

My fellow citizens, a new Benue is possible, and I enjoin all of you to join hands with me to make it a reality.

Let us begin by embracing a new way of thinking and action – by cultivating a new ethos that expresses the best of us, that brings forth our better angels and not our worst demons.

The smallness of unending political recriminations and willful economic sabotage must give way to accommodation and the pursuit of loftierideals.

There is a lot we can achieve through consensus and synergy. Our points of difference cannot be greater than the things that unite us.

Let us resolve, walk and work together as one people united by a common destiny. We the people of Benue, through this victory, have taken a new step in a new direction.

We have voted to realize the vision of their founding fathers

– the vision of a peaceful and buoyant society where both indigene and settler, the rich and the not-so-rich will engage in the pursuit of happiness unhindered.

We have voted to defeat the politics of backwardness, hate and division, in preference for a social contract that enhances our common

brotherhood and adds value to lives.

Let the word go out to the wretched of the earth in our hinterlands – the poor farmer in Sankera, the palm wine tapper in Otukpa, the petty trader at Abinsi, the rice farmer in Gwer-West, and the artisan in Gboko, that through this election, a new dawn has broken in Benue – a new dawn of equal opportunity and shared prosperity.

And let the word go out to all the ends of the earth, that a people, through this election, have risen from the ashes of deprivation and depression and are marching in lockstep towards their rightful place in the hall of greatness.

As we get set to begin the arduous task of rebuilding our state, May the God of all Goodness, who has answered our cry for freedom today, fortify us with the strength and wisdom to succeed.

God bless you all. And may God Bless the new Benue of our dreams!

Thank you all!

Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, PhD,

Governor-Elect,

Benue State.

PDP NEC Not Victory for Wike, Senate Caucus Saved the Day

From Mike Tayese, Yenagoa

An insider in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said the National Assembly caucus, on Thursday took a strategic decision that saved the day by resolving to allow the party’s acting national chairman, Alhaji Umar Damagun, to remain in office until the national convention in August 2024.

That action was a victory for the party, as it denied the different camps who were poised to either remove the chairman from office or confirm him as a substantive chairman for a tenure, the opportunity to do so.

This was revealed by an insider, who spoke to our correspondent saying being their first National Executive Council meeting, after the elections, all parties were advised to sheath their swords and allow for wider consultations and respect for the party’s constitution.

According to our reliable source, “Each camp was prevailed on to downplay their anger, and this being our first meeting after the general elections of 2023, we should neither discuss the removal of the acting chairman nor replacement with a new chairman.

“Rather we should address internal issues that should strengthen the party on discipline and reconciliations. And by next NEC meeting we should address the issue of the chairmanship. And at that meeting we would apply the party’s constitution, which states that the next national chairman should come from North Central.

Our source, who pleaded anonymity, further said, “Between now and then is enough time for consultations and we should agree on who should be the national chairman. We also resolved that the party should not be stampeded into making a choice of who should be our national chairman without the input of all major stakeholders.

“That was the position canvased by the leadership of NASS PDP Caucus. And it was taken. It is not about the the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, as being wrongly carried by some people.

“It was actually a position championed by the National Assembly Caucus led by the Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Senator Seriake Dickson. They took that decision that saved the day.

“Senator Dickson raised the issue which was carried and we set up a team and Dickson spoke on our behalf. It was a strategic decision, as we all agreed that the Alhaji Damagun will go by August, after he had concluded the congresses”.

The insider stressed that it was insulting to imagine that it was a Wike’s victory over Atiku, adding that the former Vice President and the presidential candidate for 2023 elections was there at the meeting and sat quietly.

“So it was a no victor or vanquished situation, because if Wike’s camp had their way, Damagun could have been confirned; just as those who went there with a mind of having a new chairman  also failed in their mission”.

“Interestingly, Damagun also said he is not a sit-tight chairman, just as the PDP Governors also toed same line. We will agree on a North-Central candidate that will strengthen the party after consultations.

“The Chairmanship has been zoned to the North-Central but that will not be enough qualification. We need someone who has capacity to re-build the party,” said the insider who attended the meeting.

Deliberate Litigations Stall Efforts to Resolve PDP’s Leadership Challenges – BoT

Published

By Johnson Eyiangho, Abuja

The Board of Trustee (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the solutions to the leadership problems confronting the PDP are contained in its Constitution but are being stalled by deliberate litigations.Sen. Adolphus Wabara, the Chairman of the BoT, who stated this at the board’s 77th meeting yesterday, however, said the PDP needs to resolve the challenges in the best interest of the party and its members.

”It is incumbent upon us to resolve this matter with utmost urgency, guided by transparency, fairness, and the best interests of our party and its members,” Wabara said.
He added, “Recalling the events that led to the ousting of the former Chairman of the Party in person of Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the current Acting Chairman has spent over a year in office whereas as the usual practice of the party, the region from whence the national officer hails from should have produced a viable candidate to complete the tenure of the former national officer.
”Furthermore, the contentious issue surrounding the office of the National Secretary has regrettably sown seeds of discord within our party. The ambiguity surrounding this position has led to confusion and internal strife, hindering our collective efforts to pursue our noble objectives.”The solutions to these two challenges are clearly imbibed in our party’s constitution but deliberate litigations have made the application of these constitutional solutions impossible.”He said the BoT as leaders feel the pulse of Nigerians and particularly members of the party in their demand and quest for direction at this critical time in the life of the PDP and the nation.”Nigerians are currently passing through a perilous time and their earnest expectation is for us as a party to put our house in order and effectively lead the charge to rescue our nation from the stranglehold of the All-Progressives Congress (APC),” he said. He, therefore, said that the impending expiration of the Ward and Local Government Area executive structures of the PDP presented the party with the opportunity to reinvigorate and reposition for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”The forthcoming congresses at various levels serve as a beacon of hope, offering us a platform to reaffirm our commitment to democratic ideals, grassroots participation, and inclusive governance. Let us seize this moment to embrace change, foster unity, and chart a course towards a brighter and more prosperous future for our party and our nation,” he said.In his remarks during the meeting, the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Amb. Iliya Damagum, said that in spite of the challenges confronting the party, it has been going about its activities, adding that consultations were ongoing to resolve them.Among members of the BoT in attendance at the meeting are Governor of Bauchi State, Sen. Bala Mohammed, former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi and Secretary of the BoT, former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido and Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Abbah Moro.Others former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Sen. Ben Obi, former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa, former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, Josephine Anenih, Sen. Biodun Olujimi, Sen.
