Eilish McColgan claimed her fourth victory at the Big Half in London on Sunday after returning to action following five months out with a broken toe.

The 35-year-old Scot suffered the injury during the London Marathon in April, crossing the line in seventh place with blood seeping through her shoe, and was forced to pull out of July’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

But McColgan showed the benefit of a month of warm weather training, completing a comfortable victory over the 13.

“I haven’t even run 13 miles in training! I have mentally ticked that box and can push on from here, which is great,” said the British women’s half-marathon record holder.

She beat last year’s winner Jessica Warner-Judd by one minute 19 seconds, finishing in a time of 1hr 10mins 54secs.

It was more than three minutes outside her best time for the course and well outside her British record for the distance of 1:05:43.

But McColgan added: “I came into this race in a different place from previous years, coming back into training for the last four weeks, so fitness was always going to be my biggest concern.

“I had fear over the broken toe, [so] I eased into it because of nerves and could really attack in the second half.”

Britain’s Jack Rowe missed out on a record fourth consecutive victory in the men’s race, finishing in second place, 14 seconds behind Birchfield Harriers’ Kadar Omar Abdullahi, who won in a time of 1:01:51.

Britain’s David Weir defended his title in the men’s wheelchair event, winning the race for the fifth time in its nine-year history in a new record time.

The 47-year-old, who retired from Paralympic competition in 2024, knocked 45 seconds off his own record for the course, which he set last year, winning in 46:13.

Eden Rainbow Cooper won the women’s event in 52:47 to defend her title.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has approved the immediate release of two buses, a 32-seater and an 18-seater, to Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan to support the club’s activities.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, on Sunday.

Oyelade said that the gesture came on the heels of Shooting Stars’ impressive victory over CS Sfaxien of Tunisia in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round at Abeokuta.

According to him, the approval underscores the state government’s commitment to support 3SC as they represent Oyo state on the continental stage.

Shooting Stars’ participation in the current continental competition marks the club’s first appearance in a continental competition in 27 years.

Oyelade said that the governor had assured the club’s supporters and fans that the state government would continue to provide the necessary support to enable Shooting Stars to remain in contention for continental honours.

He said that the government is determined not only to sustain the club’s current momentum, but also to restore the old glory of the “Darling Club of Oyo State.”

The commissioner urged the players, technical crew and management of Shooting Stars to remain focused and committed, assuring them of government continued support.

Former Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy has joined Burnley until the end of the season.

The 39-year-old, who is Leicester’s record Premier League scorer with 145 goals, departed for Cremonese in 2025.

Vardy left the Italian side in the summer and now joins the winless Clarets who are bottom of the Championship.

“This club has a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town,” Vardy told the club website.

“I can’t wait to get going on the pitch and help the team move in the right direction.

Vardy, who won 26 caps for England, scoring seven goals, spent 13 years at Leicester after signing from non-league Fleetwood Town in 2012.

He went on to score 200 goals in all competitions in 500 appearances.

Burnley, relegated from the Premier League last season, have made a poor start back in the second tier and have not won in five matches under new boss Nicky Hayen.

On Saturday they conceded two goals in the final 10 minutes to lose 2-1 at home to Bristol City.

“His experience and leadership will be invaluable to our squad, and we believe he can make a significant impact on our campaign,” Hayen added.

“Jamie has a proven track record, and we are looking forward to seeing him in a Claret shirt.”
