Fuel Scarcity: Group Slam Youths over Desperate Attempts to Discredit Lokpobiri

A Peace Advocacy group, the Niger Delta Nonviolence Agitators Forum (NDNAF), has condemned the desperate attempts by some few Youths from the Niger Delta region to launch a desperate attack against the Nigeria’s Oil Minister, Dr.

Heineken Lokpobiri through baseless accusation in the media.

According to the group, the attack against Lokpobiri was quite unfortunate and a baseless accusation by the miserable and very frustrated youths.

NDNAF in a statement by its National President, Wisdom Ikuli in Yenagoa said the attack is a well calculated attempt at misleading gullible members of the public to hate Senator Lokpobiri whom they erroneously accuse of creating avoidable artificial fuel scarcity that is making Nigerians to go through excruciating pains and hardship which is not true.

The group stated that by all standards, “Lokpobiri is an outstanding illustrious son of the Niger Delta region who has distinguished himself in so many areas and ways and we are satisfied with his relentless efforts in repositioning the oil sub-sector,”

Ikuli, who is a former National Director of Mobilization and Chairman of the Action Committee of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), again strongly condemned a recent media attack by some youths on the oil minister.

While dismissing the allegation made by the youths against Lokpobiri and by extension the Federal Government, Ikuli maintained that the Tinubu-led administration inherited the present crisis in the petroleum sector including petroleum subsidy.

According to him, relevant documents show that fuel subsidy was not in the 2023 budget that it inherited from the previous administration.

Ikuli maintained that things became worse because the Muhammadu Buhari administration sold Nigeria’s crude oil in advance.

The statement further urged Niger Deltans to “learn to support their elected and appointed leaders and representatives who they are supposed to build synergy instead of trying to pull them down.”

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has reaffirmed the commission’s neutrality ahead of the 2027 general election, saying INEC has no candidate or political party to favour.

In a post obtained from INEC’s X handle on Sunday, Amupitan stated this during a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Amb.

Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, as part of the commission’s stakeholder engagement and preparations for the 2027 elections.

The visit formed part of activities surrounding INEC’s planned interactive meeting with staff and readiness assessment at the zonal level.

The INEC chairman was accompanied by National Commissioners, the Acting Director-General of the Electoral Institute, his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Technical Assistant, Chief of Staff, Special Aides and other senior officials of the commission.

Amupitan described traditional institutions as important stakeholders in the electoral process because of their influence and reach within communities.

He said elections were fundamentally about the social contract between citizens and those entrusted with public office, stressing that public trust was essential to the success of democracy.

According to him, INEC has commenced preparations early because of the size and complexity of conducting elections across Nigeria.

He said the commission had moved away from last-minute preparations and was testing, auditing and strengthening its operational systems well ahead of the 2027 polls.

Amupitan assured the Emir that INEC remained committed to neutrality, fairness and transparency in the conduct of elections.

“We have no candidates, we have no political party, we have no interest other than the sovereign will of the people of Nigeria,” the INEC chairman said.

He added that the commission would continue engaging traditional institutions and other stakeholders as it intensifies preparations for the 2027 General Election.
