…Smart Policing Initiative
By Gom Miriam, Abuja
The Acting Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Kayode Egbetokun, has introduced a smart policing initiative aimed at enhancing swift and efficient responses from police personnel during emergencies.
Unveiling the `Police-VGS Quick Emergency Reporting and Response System (QERRS)’ yesterday in Abuja, Egbetokun expressed confidence that it would revolutionize police responses to emergencies.
The Police-VGS QERRS application has been designed to ensure prompt response and referral in cases of accidents, natural disasters, medical emergencies, criminal incidents, and intelligence sharing.

“With just a swipe of a button on a phone, emergency notifications will be sent directly to a dedicated team of police operatives.
These operatives will ensure a swift, live, and coordinated response in the shortest possible time,” he stated.
The I-G believes that this initiative will have a significant impact in saving lives, combating crimes, and securing communities.
Egbetokun also highlighted that the Police-VGS serves as an additional option to the already inaugurated C4i-NPF Rescue Me App, demonstrating the Nigeria Police’s commitment to public security and safety.
He encouraged the public to embrace this innovation, emphasizing its potential to enhance emergency response efforts across the country.
FRSC Cautions Gombe Residents Against Nighttime Bicycle Riding
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Gombe State has advised the state’s residents to refrain from riding bicycles at night for their safety.
The Sector Commander, Felix Theman, giving this advice pointed out that the chances of getting into a crash were higher at night, primarily due to the impact of poor visibility in causing accidents on major roads.
He stressed that darkness could hinder riders from seeing obstacles ahead while riding, making it risky for both riders and other road users, such as vehicles and pedestrians, to identify bicycle users at night.
While acknowledging the installation of solar streetlights by the state government on most major roads in the metropolis, Theman urged bicycle users not to rely solely on the streetlights as a reason to be on major roads at night.
He emphasized that most bicycles have poor lighting systems compared to motorcycles and cars, exposing riders and residents to the risk of crashes when cycling at night.
“We strongly advise against bicycle riding at night, especially for children. Parents should not allow their children to ride bicycles at night, and if they must ride on streets, they should wear bright clothes and use torchlights.
“On major roads, please avoid nighttime riding completely, as the risk is far higher,” he said.
The sector commander also cautioned bicycle users to avoid using the left-hand lane while riding to ensure their safety on the road.
While acknowledging that bicycles are part of the traffic system and users have the same rights as any other road users, he emphasized the importance of being careful not to create conflicts on the roads.
According to Theman, bicycles, motorcycles, and tricycles should not use the left-hand lane, especially the extreme left lane, as it is meant for fast-moving vehicles. Instead, he advised bicycle users to stick to the extreme right lane, using the left lane only when necessary, such as when crossing the road, avoiding potholes, or making U-turns.
Theman appealed to parents in the state to caution their children against riding bicycles, especially on major roads, to avoid road conflicts and crashes.

Gunmen Abduct Immigration Personnel In Benue, Demand N20 Million Ransom

From Attah Ede, Makurdi
Armed men suspected to be kidnappers, have abducted an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service(NIS) Benue State Command, identified as Simon Agbo at his residence in Makurdi, the state capital.
A close relation of the victim who disclosed this to our correspondent on phone on Monday in Makurdi, said the officer was busy discussing with two of his direct neighbours on Sunday night May 11, 2025 at about 7:15pm before they came to kidnapped him.
He said the incidence happened at opposite NKST church Kuan, behind modern market in Makurdi, after the kidnappers stormed the compound and took him away at gunpoint to unknown destination.
Our correspondent gathered that the kidnappers who were well armed first fired gunshots sporadically in the air to scare family members and neighbours of the victim before abducting him from his residence.
It was further gathered that the victim was serving in Kwara State before he was redeployed to Benue State command on February this year.
Upon hearing his abduction, youths in the whole community in collaboration with local vigilantes immediately launched a search throughout the night but the gunmen could not be caught.
Younger brother of the victim, who simply identified himself as Mr. Agbo told our correspondent that one of the victim’s neighbours have been apprehended in connection with kidnapping of the immigration officer, hence his role before the incidence took place.
According to him, the neighbour whom he refused to mentioned his name, was consistently calling on the victim to come home or he should direct him to his location as at that time, that they needed to see that fateful Sunday night by all means.
“After persistent calls, that my brother should come home or if possible, describe his whereabout, then, my brother came home and went straight to that his neighbour’s compound.
“While they were at the compound discussing, another of their neighbours came to joined them and all of a sudden, the gunmen arrived the compound and immediately went straight to the immigration officer, picked only him at gunpoint, leaving the remaining two people behind.
“The neighbour’s action looks very suspicious and that is why we called for his arrest. He has been arrested and currently in police custody until our brother is released.
“As I speak with you, the kidnappers have opened discussion with the family. They are demanding for N20 million ransom for his release as at today”, he said.
The Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Immigration Service NIS could not be reached for comment as at the time of filing this report.
Efforts to get confirmation from police was unsuccessful as the Benue State Command Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Sewuese Anene, is yet to receive calls or respond to text messages sent to her cell phone
