I’m an Academia not a Kidnaper, Varsity Don Cries Out

By David Torough, Abuja

A lecturer in the department of Microbiology, Joseph Saawuan Tarka University formerly known as Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi, Dr.

Ichor Tersagh Smart has cried out that he is an Academia and not a Kidnapper as alleged by wife of his colleague and the chairperson of the university chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU) Paul Igber Anyagh.
The university Don who cried out on Thursday while interacting with journalists in Makurdi, the Benue State capital explained that the allegation by Susan Anyagh that she saw him at the scene of her kidnap is a hallucinated fabrication, a falsehood that she carelessly crafted in cahoots with the husband and a few of other colleagues in the University to misinform the public and tarnish his hard earned and established impeccable integrity and image.
Ichor stated that he had engagements in his village in Ikurav Tiev 2 in Katsina Ala LGA and was not close to Makurdi throughout that weekend and had left Makurdi for Katsina – ala on Friday 6th December, 2024 in company of the Commissioner for ICT and Digital Economy, Hon. Kwaghgba  Amande, the  Executive Secretary, Benue State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Joseph Jande as well as the President General, Ikurav Tiev Development Association, Terlumun Orhembetyoga among others for burial of their kinsman Late Mr. Shen Agbo which wake keep  held on 6th and burial on the 7th December, 2024. ” I couldn’t have duplicated myself to be at the scene of the imaginary kidnap of Mrs Anyagh   and at the same be at the burial in my village on the same day,  the distance from Makurdi to my village notwithstanding” he emphasized. The academia stressed that the statements that he made calls to the kidnappers to kill the victim to conceal whatever  secret she imagined as another make-believe delusion because the police during their investigation have traced my phones and established that he did not make or receive any call throughout that Saturday, 7th December, 2024. “We left very early to the burial and upon arrival, there was limited network and the battery of my phone drained in the course of the burial”, he emphasized .The Environmental Microbology and Bioremediation specialist further said he was nominated by the church in the village, NKST Abo for award at her 30th anniversary as a consistory which was held on the 8th December 2024 emphasized that, “If the ASUU JOSTUM branch chairperson’s wife Mrs. Susan Anyagh saw me at the scene of her kidnap, then she was not kidnapped”.He narrated that the ASUU–JOSTUM branch operates two welfare accounts, the national and local welfare accounts. The local welfare account domiciled with Zenith bank with account number 1010646893 has had challenges of gross misappropriation by the leadership of the union at the branch which concerned members of the branch have on several occasions called for its audit which the Chairperson Dr Anyagh has failed to accede to the demand. There has been sustained mindless embezzlement and allocation of funds to some selected  ASUU members in the name of borrowing over the years without any attempt for recovery which has crippled the effective management and fulfillment of the branch obligation to genuinely affected members of the Union especially the families of our deceased colleagues as encapsulated in the operational guidelines of the welfare document. He emphasized that the same scenario had played out previously and the National Executive Committee of ASUU had intervened and provided funds where the affected families of our colleagues were paid and are supposedly recovering monies from the past Chairperson. Over fifty members of the branch wrote the Chairperson to express their concerns and even to ASUU – NEC through him as required including me without any response. Instead the Chairperson has blocked everybody from posting anything on all the ASUU – JOSTUM social media platforms when members started sharing their concerns over his financial misconduct. Anyagh has killed the internal democracy that ASUU is known for at the  branch. A meeting of the ASUU JoSTUM Branch was slated to hold on the 5th December, 2024, on a Thursday morning, so I posted the dates of withdrawals, cheque numbers, amounts and names of the serial accredited perennial borrowers from the welfare account on the wider University whatsapp group “JOSTUM COMMUNITY” for the University community to see the stealing that has been going on. In the meeting Dr Anyagh announced that he was going to end posting of ASUU issues on University platforms other than ASUU.  On the 7th December, 2024; a day after I was allegedly present at the scene of the kidnap of the Chairpersons wife calling kidnappers to kill her. Is this the kidnapping?, he asked. On his ordeal in the custody of Nigeria police, the Academic Don detailed that he left his village for Katsina Ala town on Saturday after the burial, at about 4:30am and early hours of Sunday at about 4: 30 am his wife called through his immediate younger sisters phone that police have gained entrance to their house through the fence  led by one  DSP  Daniel Ezeala the then DPO of ‘E’ Division AKpehe and were looking for him and invaded the house without a search warrant, beleaguered the family, scattered the clothes and the wife’s underclothes under the facade of searching for him and towed my car away to the station. He said, ” the police also shot guns in the compound, I returned to Makurdi on same Sunday 8th December, 2024 at about 9 pm and told  Ezeala  through a phone call that I was coming to the station the following day by 8 am. I reported as promised and upon sighting me, Ezeala signed my detention order and handed me over to the IPO who confronted me with the statements of Mrs Anyagh as the complainant and Dr Paul Igber Anyagh as the nominal complainant alleging that she sighted me at the scene of her kidnap and also heard me clearly directing the kidnappers to kill her through a phone call”.” I was detained for a night at E division, moved to police State headquarters the following day where I was detained for two days; Prof. Ahemen Iorkyaa who came visiting was detained for a night, his offence was that he came to see me.  On 12th December, 2024, thursday evening, I was moved to the headquarters of operation Dzenda in Makurdi. At operation Dzenda, Dr. Anyagh’s relation who hails from the same village in Gwer West LGA of Benue State;  Inspr Moses Iorpav was among others assigned as an investigating police officer (IPO) with one Inspr Bukar Alhassan as the leader of the investigation team. In the absence of Bukar and when investigation had not commenced, Moses Iorpav on the evening of Friday 13th December 2024 brought me out  from the cell and handed me over to the then ASP now DSP David Mondo for torcher.  I was mercilessly beaten; David pounded my feet with a 2×2 wood with a promise to disable me. He dislocated one  toe on my left foot and four of my  toes on the right foot as revealed by  X ray”. They also brought Dr. Anyagh, his wife and one Aper Zava who stood by the window and watched his brutalization and maltreatment. According to the University Don, upon his release he read the account of the Benue State police, Makurdi command wherein they promised through a press release signed by the PPRO, CSP Sewuese Anene to inform the public of the result of their investigation. Regrettably after almost over thirty five days of his incarceration in police custody up to today, the command has not fulfilled her promise to the public. Dr. Ichor also averred that there was no Commissioner’s interview between the complainants and himself while with the Makurdi Police command as is done until the takeover of the case by FCID. He was eventually released by the Force Criminal Investigation Department FCID of Nigeria police after thorough investigation. Dr Ichor through his legal Cousels Barr I A Ututu, Barr. Vincent Tortsugh and Barr. Emmanuel Ahembahan filed a suit to enforce his fundamental human right at the Federal High Court of Nigeria in the Abuja Judicial division. Holden at Abuja on Tuesday, the 4th day of February 2025 before his. Lordship, the Hon. Justice Emeka Nwite Jude ordered that the arrest and detention of Dr. Smart Ichor beyond 24hours is a clear gross and flagrant breach of his fundamental rights to personal liberty guaranteed under sections 35 and 46 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as such a fine of N5, 000,0000,00 (Five Million Naira) only was awarded in his favor as damages.

The Katsina State Government says the winner of the Quranic recitation competition, Abdulsalam Rabiu-Faskari, his father and brother are still alive, but in the custody of their abductors.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr Bala Salisu-Zango, on Friday in Katsina.

It could be recalled that the victims were abducted two days ago on their way to Faskari from Katsina, after they were honoured by Gov.

Dikko Radda, for his outstanding performance during the National Qur’anic recitation competition held in Kebbi.

Salisu-Zango said he would represent Nigeria in the recitation of the whole Quran at the forthcoming international edition of the competition.

“The attention of Katsina state Government has been drawn to the recent media reports and condolence messages contained in a press statement signed by Special Advisor to Kebbi  Governor on Media and Publicity.

“It was to the effect that the kidnapped winner of National Qur’anic recitation competition, Hafizul Qur’an and ABU final year Medical student from Katsina State, Abdussalam Rabiu-Faskari was killed by his abductors.

“We appreciate the kind gesture, concern and compassion shown by the Kebbi  Government over the unfortunate incident,

“We,. however, wish to state that the Quranic recitation competition winner, Rabiu-Faskari, his father and brother were really abducted by bandits.

“But information reaching the government indicates that, they are still alive and healthy in the custody of their abductors,” he said.

Salisu-Zango further said that as at  Friday, their abductors were demanding for a ransom of N30 million from their family.

The commissioner qouted Radda as describing the kidnapping of the young talented student, alongside his father and brother as unfortunate.

“My heart is with the victims, their family, relatives and friends, and we pray they safely regain freedom.

“Government will take concrete actions to rescue and ensure the safe return of all the abducted victims, as rescue effort is being put in place,” Radda said.

The Governor then urged the security agents to put all hands on deck to ensure the safe rescue of the victims.

Radda reiterated the commitment of his administration to addressing the prevailing security challenges in the state.

He further called on the people to fervently pray for the safety and freedom of Rabiu-Faskari and all others in the hands of those evil abductors.(NAN)

Students Urge Sen Akpoti to Shift Focus Towards National Progress

BY HENRY TYOHEMBA, Abuja

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) hasurged Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to reconsider her approach and contribute positively to Nigeria’s legislative discourse, rather than perpetuating division.

Jeremiah Friday, NANS Financial Secretary, who spoke on behalf of the president, Comrade Oladoja Olushola, during a peaceful protest in solidarity with the 10th National Assembly, said the unfolding drama within Senate chambers has reached a critical juncture that demands collective attention.
He also called for civility in the Nigerian Senate, urging lawmakers to put an end to the ongoing political disruptions that have marred the legislative process.
“The recent exchanges in the Nigerian Senate, marked by attacks and counterattacks, have raised serious concerns. As Nigerian students, we find it necessary to weigh in on these developments. “The Senate floor, once a sanctuary for reasoned debate and policy formulation, has devolved into an arena of personal vendettas and political brinkmanship. “This is concerning, especially at a time when the Federal Government is making concerted efforts to reshape the country’s economic trajectory, combat inflation, reduce the cost of living, and promote socio-cultural respect, dignity, and harmony. “President Tinubu’s administration has embarked on ambitious economic reforms that require legislative partnership, not parliamentary paralysis.” NANS stated that the Senate should not be a battleground for political warfare. “Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s decision to exploit flak from her unfortunate misunderstanding of Senate rules reflects a troubling trend, prioritising personal ambition over institutional integrity. “Such actions blur the lines between legitimate political argumentation and seemingly manipulative tactics designed to incite conflict rather than foster constructive dialogue.” NANS, therefore, advocated for an environment where healthy debates thrive, emphasising the need to draw the line when personal vendettas destabilize legislative peace in a nation where the price of a bag of rice outweighs the nation’s monthly minimum wage. “By perpetuating these distractions, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan not only puts the reputation of her fellow senators at risk but also endangers the integrity of the Senate itself,” he added.

Tiv Community in Nasarawa Alleges Ethnic Cleansing, Land Grabbing by State Govt

By David Torough, Abuja

Tiv people living in Nasarawa state have raised the alarm over plan by the state government to forcefully takeover their ancestral land in Nasarawa South Senatorial District especially in parts of Awe, Keana and Obi Local Government Areas without recourse to due process with intention to evict them from the state.

The people cried out during a press conference in Abuja on Friday led by thePresident, Mdzough U Tiv, Nasarawa State chapter, Philip Nongu.
Nongo alleged that key conspirators holding brief for the Nasarawa State Government and claiming ownership of the Tiv ancestral farmlands in parts of Awe and Obi are the Osoho of Agwatashi, Dr. Umar Abubakar Apeshi and the Sarkin Jangwa, Alhaji Adamu Shehu.
According to him, the conspirators have adopted blackmail and mischief to subdue and take undue advantage of the helpless landowners, using security apparatus to cover and arbitrarily execute this “evil agenda, which is an existential threat to thousands of Tiv farmers”.He said that the land, handed down to them by their forefathers which have earmarked for grabbing, is estimated to be over 10,000 hectares in parts of Awe and Obi as well as thousands of hectares in Keana, has been inhabited and cultivated by the Tiv people for centuries, serving as their source of livelihood. “As we speak, bulldozers and excavators are pulling down trees and clearing the designated 10,000 hectares of land with insinuations that additional thousands of hectares will be added, thereby forcefully taking over people’s farmlands without an interface. This has never been heard of in any part of the world where there is regard for law and order. And no Tiv farmer.is.ready to give out his heritage and source of livelihood for whatever reason.”In a similar manner, farmers in the Azer community of Keana Local Government Area woke up one day to discover a signboard with the inscription: ‘Obi Local Government Rice Farm Ome, Powered by Hon. Isa Sani Muhammad (KK), Executive Chairman Obi LGC. Keep Off!'”Chiefs of Keana, Giza, Kadarko and Kwara are allegedly the brains behind heavy mobilisation of strangers from outside the state to settle on Tiv existing farmlands. This is a deliberate ploy to displace the locals and take possession of their land. This should be thoroughly investigated. “It is even more worrisome that we suspect the state Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Sule is annexing those farmlands for himself or a certain powerful business man in the country whose conglomerate he (Sule) once worked for and has been the governor’s benefactor for decades. “The fact that the governor ceded a vast portion of land to the business man in Awe local government for a sugarcane farm gives credence to our suspicion. Imagine Tiv farmers renting unused portions of the Dangote farms, which previously belonged to them for cultivation before they were dispossessed of those lands forcefully using executive powers. So sad,” he said.Nongo narrated that there is ongoing clearing of land by the intruders, Beaconing of farmlands without their consent, Coercion of leaders to consent to the sale of land and Toppling of rice farms in the affected communities. He appealed to President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), international community and other relevant stakeholders to prevail on the Nasarawa State government to stop the forceful takeover of their ancestral farmlands.”We also appeal to the Emir of Lafia, His Royal Highness, Justice Sidi Bagel (Rtd), Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Professor James Ayatse and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Dr. George Akume, to put heads together and halt this unjust treatment of Tiv farmers in Nasarawa State.”We state unequivocally that we are bonafide indigenes of these communities and ancestral farmlands, where we are being forced to leave, and we beg concerned authorities to intervene by using all legitimate approaches to protect our livelihoods. This is a democracy where the rule of law must be protected,” he added.According to the 2006 census, over 255,000 Tiv people comprising five LGAs are indigenes in Nasarawa state.
