NLC Protest: Tension as hoodlums plan to hijack protest in Imo

Marcel Duru, Charity Wins Owerri

The Commissioner of Police Imo State Command Mr Aboki Danjuma has stated that the Command in Imo State is going to deal ruthlessly to hoodlums who will use the Nigeria Union of Labour protest to cause fracas in the State.

Speaking with journalists at the Command
headquarters Owerri yesterday he revealed that criminals wanted to use the opportunity to create confusion, tension and loot people’s property, adding that any body caught trying to disrupt peace in the State will be squarely dealt with according to the law.

He further stated that the situation in Nigeria did call for any form of strike action, describing NLC plan protest as ill wind that blows no body good.

“Imo State Police Command has set every machinery in motion to check mate any eventuality that might arise in the NLC plan protest slated for February 27, 28 2024”

Similarly a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri-West Local Government Area of Imo State and Former Special Adviser(SA) to the Governor on Orientation Dr. Fidel Onyeneke has made special appeal to Nigeria Police Imo State Command to do everything humanly possible to prevent the hoodlum from hijacking NLC protest coming soon.

He said that there is nothing wrong in carrying out a protest and also nothing wrong in agitations or going on strike but there is every thing wrong when you have bad intension in carrying out these Democratic exercise

He emphasised that the essence of every demonstration in civilised society is to make things go well or to tell the government and the World that you are not being treated well and must follow all the rules and regulations that guide every protest, strike action and agitation.

Onyeneke further highlighted that every protest must be spontaneous and any protest that is not spontaneous or instigated is not a genuine one and cannot yield expected result, urged the police to guide the protesters and make sure that the protest is not hijacked by criminals .

“In a situation where people are patriotic should know when to do certain things and when not to do, it is cristal clear that Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gun powder does not mean that we should make it collapse like ancient kingdoms of Western Sudan, that is why protest and agitations need a lot of thinking and brain work, making Nigeria one is the responsibility of government and governed”

In the same vein a retired security Adviser in Sam Mbakwe’s administration in 1983 Chief Joseph Nwaka has called on the NLC to cancel the plan protest scheduled on February 27,28, 2024 so as to forestall disastrous consequences.

“The unmitigated hardship in Nigeria now such spontaneous protest should not be allowed, if allowed should be handled with care that it will not snowball into nineteenth century revolution ocastrated by Usman Dan Fodio”

Naira Appreciation: FCCPC Intensifies Enforcements to Discourage Unfair Price Hike

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) says it will intensify monitoring and enforcement in formal and informal markets to ensure that business owners do not unfairly inflate prices.

Dr Adamu Abdullahi, the Acting Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, was reacting to complaints by consumers that in spite of the appreciation of the Naira against the dollar, prices of goods were still increasing.

Abdullahi said in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, that the situation was unacceptable, and the Commission was committed to protecting consumers from exploitation.

He said that the operatives of FCCPC would work with trade associations, farmer groups, and other stakeholders to combat price-fixing, and dismantle cartels.

This, according to Abdullahi, will encourage increased competition and ultimately lead to lower prices for consumers.

”The FCCPC understands the significant financial strain these rising prices are placing on Nigerian households. As a result, the Commission is taking proactive steps to addressing this issue.

”While the FCCPC cannot directly regulate prices, the Commission will utilise its existing legal framework to enforce fair competition and consumer protection provisions.

”This includes monitoring and investigating unusual price hikes, addressing complaints filed by consumers, and taking action against any businesses found to be engaging in anti-competitive practices such as price-fixing, price gouging or cartel formation.

”The Commission remains committed to educating consumers about their rights and empowering them to make informed choices.

”We will engage in advocacy and public awareness campaigns to raise awareness about price gouging and other unfair trade practices and provide guidance on how to identify and report such practices.

”We will collaborate with relevant regulatory bodies to develop a comprehensive and coordinated response to anti-competitive practices, price gouging, and other consumer protection issues,” he said.

He encouraged consumers to continue to report suspected price gouging and other unfair trade practices through

”Together, we can work towards a more stable, fair, and competitive marketplace for all Nigerians.” (NAN)
