Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has called on the Federal Government to synergise with his administration and step up military operations that will flushout armed herdsmen from neighbouring states bordering Benue.

He said, this will help end the invasion of Benue communities by killer herdsmen who have continued to use the porous nature of the state borders to invade hapless communities on the Benue side of the border.

The governor made the call while reacting to the killing of scores of villagers from Ahentse Village in Ndzorov Ward of Guma Local Government Area.

Nzorov is the council ward of the Benue state governor and that of his Principal Special Assistant on Special Duties, Abrahams Kwaghngu.

The governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur, expressed sadness over the recent attack on Tse Ahentse, near Iyordye in Guma Local Government Area at dawn on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 said it was time the Federal Government further “stepped up the military operations in states that share common boundaries with Benue state because these communities along the borders have become targets of the armed herders.”

He emphasised that “It was time to end this unnecessary shedding of innocent blood. We can do it if we cooperate with each other,” the governor said in a statement by his media office.

He recalled how he has been synergising with his counterparts by holding joint security and peace meetings to build confidence amongst the people so that they will live in peace with one another.

He bemoaned “The situation where killer herdsmen take shelter with our neighbours, sneak in and kill our people without provocation” saying, “this will not be tolerated any longer. Let the security agencies continue to cooperate with us in Benue to end this bloodletting. Let us  dislodge these invaders from wherever they may be hiding for peace to return to our communities.”

The Governor while commending the security agencies for their steadfastness and commitment to ending the crises,  called on Benue people to begin to arm themselves with “lawful weapons as presecribed by law and defend themselves against the Fulani invaders.”

The governor said “it is no longer fashionable to continue to cry out for help. We must now be at alert and ready to confront these killers. This is another way we can assist the security agencies in combating this menace since they obviously  overstrectched beyond limits.”

In the early hours of Tuesday, March 8, 2022, herdsmen invaded Ahentse  community, Mbagen kindred in Nzorov council ward of Guma Local Government Area and shot sporadically and killed many people and injuring others.

Some of the dead bodies of those found killed by herdsmen who attacked Tse Ahentse near Iyordye in Guma LGA at dawn are: Clement Tortiv, Enoch Utim, Terkimbi Kutaer, Mtaaega Tyogbea and Aondoaver Swende. The injured include: Sunday Gaga and Torkwase Igbira.

FCT Recorded Drop in Kidnapping, Other Crimes in 2024, says Official

The Federal Capital Territory has recorded a drop in the incidents of kidnappings and other crimes across the territory in 2024.

Mr Adamu Gwary, the Director of Security Service Department of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) , made this known during the department’s end of year news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

Gwary described kidnappings as one of the major areas of security concern in rural communities across the FCT, particularly in 2023.

“Today, we can beat our chest to say that the number of reported cases of kidnappings have significantly dropped.

“Before now, you can hardly go a week without having a reported case of kidnapping.

“Now, when we check our statistics, you will notice that sometimes a whole month will go by without any incident,” he said.

The director, a fellow of the National Defence College, also said that the incidence of one chance crime has drastically dropped compared to the situation in 2023.

He added that the current operation against the use of tinted glasses across the city has contributed to the declining incidents of one chance.

He also said that the operations against scavengers, street hawkers and beggars also yielded the desired result.

He said that the measure had rid the city of criminal elements disguising as scavengers, beggars and street hawkers.

According to him, FCT is safer and secure as at today, when compared with the security situation in early and middle of 2023.

“Looking at the outgoing year, there are a lot of changes that the department does in terms of executing our assigned responsibility.

“Traditionally, we used to generate a monthly Intelligence report, process the same and transmit it to the office of the National Security Adviser for further action.

“This year we have done it differently by bringing our statistical information about crime and criminality, particularly the level of success our security agencies achieved in terms of busting crime, arm recovery and other activities of our security personnel.

“The data were generated to ensure that at least, it helps the administration in terms of assessing the performance of our security agencies for planning purposes.

“For instance, when we look at our statistical information, we look at what crimes are most prevalent, where the administration will channel its energy toward addressing the same.”

Gwary attributed the successes to the measures put in place by the FCT Administration in collaboration with security agencies and the support of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

He said that the minister has supported the department in ensuring that security agencies in the FCT were effectively supported to improve their operations and coverage. (NAN)
