Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has called on the Federal Government to synergise with his administration and step up military operations that will flushout armed herdsmen from neighbouring states bordering Benue.

He said, this will help end the invasion of Benue communities by killer herdsmen who have continued to use the porous nature of the state borders to invade hapless communities on the Benue side of the border.

The governor made the call while reacting to the killing of scores of villagers from Ahentse Village in Ndzorov Ward of Guma Local Government Area.

Nzorov is the council ward of the Benue state governor and that of his Principal Special Assistant on Special Duties, Abrahams Kwaghngu.

The governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur, expressed sadness over the recent attack on Tse Ahentse, near Iyordye in Guma Local Government Area at dawn on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 said it was time the Federal Government further “stepped up the military operations in states that share common boundaries with Benue state because these communities along the borders have become targets of the armed herders.”

He emphasised that “It was time to end this unnecessary shedding of innocent blood. We can do it if we cooperate with each other,” the governor said in a statement by his media office.

He recalled how he has been synergising with his counterparts by holding joint security and peace meetings to build confidence amongst the people so that they will live in peace with one another.

He bemoaned “The situation where killer herdsmen take shelter with our neighbours, sneak in and kill our people without provocation” saying, “this will not be tolerated any longer. Let the security agencies continue to cooperate with us in Benue to end this bloodletting. Let us  dislodge these invaders from wherever they may be hiding for peace to return to our communities.”

The Governor while commending the security agencies for their steadfastness and commitment to ending the crises,  called on Benue people to begin to arm themselves with “lawful weapons as presecribed by law and defend themselves against the Fulani invaders.”

The governor said “it is no longer fashionable to continue to cry out for help. We must now be at alert and ready to confront these killers. This is another way we can assist the security agencies in combating this menace since they obviously  overstrectched beyond limits.”

In the early hours of Tuesday, March 8, 2022, herdsmen invaded Ahentse  community, Mbagen kindred in Nzorov council ward of Guma Local Government Area and shot sporadically and killed many people and injuring others.

Some of the dead bodies of those found killed by herdsmen who attacked Tse Ahentse near Iyordye in Guma LGA at dawn are: Clement Tortiv, Enoch Utim, Terkimbi Kutaer, Mtaaega Tyogbea and Aondoaver Swende. The injured include: Sunday Gaga and Torkwase Igbira.

Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has said that no ransom was paid to the abductors of the four female students of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) rescued by the military.

Sule disclosed this after paying a thank-you visit to the Commandant, 177 Guard Batallion, Keffi Local Government, Lt.

Col. Auwalu Inuwa, on Saturday.

Reports says that the four students were kidnapped in their residence in Agwan Kare district in Keffi in the early hours of Tuesday, October 10 and taken to unknown destination.

However, after intensive manhunt by the police, military and other security agencies, the girls were rescued on Thursday afternoon.

Inuwa confirmed to newsmen that the students were rescued in the surrounding bushes of Agwan Gauta in Keffi after painstaking efforts by the military officers.

Speaking on the development, Sule said that neither the NSUK authorities nor the military paid any ransom before the abducted students were rescued.

“I am not aware of any ransom.  Once security officials mount pressure on the kidnappers, I don’t think there was ranson.

“There was no ranson paid to the best of my knowledge.

“The university didn’t pay any ransom and neither did the military,” he said.

The governor told newsmen that he was at the barracks personally to convey the appreciation of President Bola Tinubu to the commandant for their efforts in rescuing the girls.

He expressed joy seeing the girls in good health, with their parents making arrangements to receive their daughters back.

He disclosed that the military is putting up additional measures to beef up security not only around the university but on the Akwanga-Abuja highway.

“I am happy and I am here to show great appreciation to the commandant and the other security agents that also participated in the rescue operations.

“The commandant informed me that the police and civil defence also participated along with the community leaders.

“I am happy also to see the parents getting ready to see how they can take over their children,” a visibly elated governor said. (NAN)
