Snooker Legend Virgo Dies at 79

Snooker legend and BBC commentator John Virgo has died, aged 79.

Virgo enjoyed an 18-year professional career, winning the UK Championship and reaching the semi-finals of the World Championship in 1979.

He is perhaps best known for his post-playing career, presenting popular snooker TV show Big Break alongside comedian Jim Davidson from 1991 to 2002.

Following his retirement from playing in 1994, Virgo became a BBC commentator.

His last commentary for the BBC came 17 days ago when Kyren Wilson beat John Higgins in the Masters final.

Virgo was a popular commentator, with his famous “where’s the cue ball going?” catchphrase when a player was close to committing a foul.

Players and officials held a minute’s silence at the World Grand Prix in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan said: “Finished my match to get the news that JV has passed away.

“Such a great mate who I loved spending time with. Absolutely gutted.”

Four-time world champion Mark Selby said: “So sad to hear the news of the passing of John Virgo! Such a great guy and a huge character! He will be greatly missed! RIP JV.”

Former world champion Shaun Murphy, who worked alongside Virgo for the BBC, said: “I first met John in 1994, filming Junior Big Break. He then went on to become a friend and colleague.

“I learned so much from him whilst sharing a commentary box. The voice of snooker will be sadly missed.”

Virgo regularly took part in exhibition matches, playing trick shots and performing impressions of other players.

Former world champion Neil Robertson said: “He was a great character and an amazing pundit and commentator.

“I had the pleasure of sharing the booth with him during the World Championship a couple of years ago in which I got a huge appreciation for how good he was.”

A World Snooker statement read: “Everyone at the World Snooker Tour is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of legendary snooker player and broadcaster John Virgo.”

Former world number three Neal Foulds said: “Terribly sad news that we have lost one of the greats of snooker in John Virgo.

“JV was incredibly generous, kind and funny. He was also a wonderful player and commentator. Thanks for all the great memories JV.”

Virgo, who was born in Salford in 1946, is survived by wife Rosie and children Gary and Brooke-Leah.

John was a tremendous competitor and a very good break-builder – brilliant among the pink and black. He knew the game inside and out and backwards.

Then he transcended the sport and went into the commentary box. He did Big Break with Jim Davidson, so he became a household name to everybody.

It was that voice which was very different to everyone else and made him stand out.

You could have a right laugh with him – he loved a joke.

He had a really good act and he did impersonations of Alex Higgins, Terry Griffiths, Cliff Thorburn – and they all loved it.

It was unusual for someone to do that at the end of an exhibition, but he was absolutely brilliant at it.

I’m sure when we give him a tribute at the Crucible [for the World Championship in April] they will show his impressive routine, which is just hilarious.

He was a brilliant character.

The Kogi State Government has pledged to prioritise the development of basketball in the state to boost the sport’s profile and promote youth engagement.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Monday Anyebe, made the pledge at the inauguration of the Kogi State Basketball Association on Tuesday in Lokoja.

Anyebe assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to the development of basketball under the administration of Gov.

Ahmed Ododo.

Represented by the Director of Sports in the state, James Igah, the commissioner said the administration would focus on nurturing basketball, particularly in rural areas, to enhance youth development.

He added that the government would collaborate with the association to promote sports development across the state.

Anyebe urged the newly inaugurated executives of the association to come up with innovative ideas to advance the sport.

Responding, the Chairman of the Kogi State Basketball Association, Mustapha Abdullahi, reaffirmed his commitment to the growth of basketball in the state.

Abdullahi, who is also the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, commended the state government for its efforts in promoting sports development.

US Lawmaker Demands FIFA pay World Cup Transport Bill amid Ticket Hikes

A top US lawmaker called on FIFA to pay for World Cup public transportation costs on Tuesday following a report that local authorities in New Jersey are planning massive price hikes during the tournament.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, said on X that football’s world governing body — which stands to earn $11 billion from the tournament — should foot the bill for transport costs to World Cup venues.

Schumer was responding to a report in The Athletic on Tuesday, which said New Jersey Transit is planning to charge fans more than $100 for tickets from Penn Station in Manhattan to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey during the World Cup.

A return ticket for the journey normally costs $12.90.

“FIFA is set to reap nearly $11 billion from this summer’s World Cup, yet New York area commuters and residents are being handed the bill,” Schumer commented.

“The least FIFA can do is ensure New York residents can go to the stadium without being gouged at the turnstile. I am demanding FIFA step up and cover transportation costs for host cities and states.

“New York commuters and residents should not subsidise an $11 billion windfall.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also took aim at the reported price hike.

“The World Cup should be as affordable and accessible as possible,” Hochul wrote on X. “Charging over $100 for a short train ride sounds awfully high to me.”

NJ Transit did not immediately respond to a request for comment when contacted by AFP.

The Athletic quoted a spokesperson for the agency as saying that no firm decision had been taken on World Cup ticket pricing.

“The ticket prices for match day travel have not been finalised, and any reference to cost would be unconfirmed speculation,” the spokesperson said.

The Athletic report cited NJ Transit sources as saying that the cost of laying on services for the eight matches due to be held at MetLife Stadium — including the final on July 19 — would cost around $48 million.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has said the state will not pass on the cost of transportation to local taxpayers.

“We are not going to be paying for moving the people who are viewing the World Cup on the back of New Jersey taxpayers and New Jersey commuters,” Sherrill said on Monday.

The issue of public transport fare hikes affecting World Cup venues also emerged in Boston, where the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority confirmed earlier this month that return tickets from the city to Gillette Stadium would cost $80 — up from the usual price of $20.

2026 Unity Cup: Don’t Exclude NPFL Players from Eagles, Ekpo Tells Chelle

Former Nigerian international Friday Ekpo has advised Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle not to exclude players from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) from the list of players that will be invited for the 2026 Unity Cup.

Nigeria will compete in the 2026 Unity Cup in London from May 26–30, 2026, at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic FC.

As defending champions, Nigeria will face Jamaica, Zimbabwe, and India in this four-nation tournament celebrating Afrocentric and global diaspora communities.

In a chat, Ekpo stated that opportunities should be given to the NPFL players to prove their worth in the Super Eagles.

“The Unity Cup should be an opportunity for the Super Eagles handler to pick a few of the NPFL players who he thinks are capable of contributing positively to the senior national team.

“I have nothing against inviting foreign players to the team, but neglecting players in the domestic league should not be encouraged because we still have quality players who can be of great value to the team.”
