From Dele Ogunyemi, Ibadan

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West has thrown its weight behind the party’s presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections in Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, to drag President Muhammadu Buhari to the Supreme Court.

This follows Wednesday’s judgement of the presidential election petition tribunal which upheld the declaration of Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the 2019 presidential poll as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Rising from a crucial meeting in Ibadan, Oyo Stare capital on Thursday, the South West PDP resolved that Abubakar Atiku should proceed to the apex court based on allegation that he did not get justice from the tribunal on his petition against Buhari.

In attendance at the meeting which was hosted by Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, in the Government House, Ibadan, were party leaders including the National Deputy Chairman (South), Elder Yemi Akinwonmi; National Vice Chairman (South West), Dr. Eddy Olafeso, and all chairmen of the party in zone.

Others comprised former deputy governors of Ekiti (Dr. Olusola Eleka), and Lagos (Kofoworola Akerele-Bucknor) as well as the 2019 PDP governorship flagbearer in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje.

A six-point communique issued at the end of the meeting and read by Olafeso, specifically urged Atiku to proceed to the apex court based on allegation that he did not get justice from the tribunal on his petition against Buhari.

The communique said that the PDP in the South West Zone took serious views of developments in the nation and region, before it reached the resolutions.

The communique read in part: “We also take serious view of the verdict of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal on the petitions of our party and candidate, Atiku Abubakar, therefore, put on record our disappointment that justice was not done, in view of the plethora of evidences laid before it, and resolves to support the party to appeal against same at the Supreme Court.

“Due attention is accorded to the verdicts of both the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court on the Osun State governorship election, particularly its resolve to subject the electoral desires and expression of the people of that state to the technicality of a judge missing just a day’s sitting at the tribunal level. While we continue to accord due respect to the judiciary, it is essential that its rulings and verdicts command the respect and confidence of the citizenry in the interest of the nation.

“The party must review the conduct of off-season elections in the South West, with a view to develop a response system that will forestall, arrest and vanquish all APC inspired rigging plans in future elections, beginning with the very next gubernatorial elections in Ondo State.

“The party takes serious notice of the students demonstration at Federal University of Science, Oye Ekiti and the resultant killing of at least two students by the police. We declare that it is callous and criminal of the police to use live ammunitions on unarmed student demonstrators, therefore demand that those irresponsible officers who killed them must be fished out for trial.”

The zonal body of PDP also congratulated Makinde, on his election and inauguration as governor of Oyo State, thanking him for his leadership role in the zone.

“We further commend him for the giant strides he continues to take in the administration of the state. These deft moves confirms his determination and preparedness to drive the frontiers of development to new heights in Oyo State and set a new pace for other states to follow. We are indeed proud of achievements recorded within his first 100 days in office.”

Earlier in a welcome address, Governor Seyi Makinde harped on unity among members of the party saying it is only unity Thai would guarantee electoral victory for the party in the governorship elections in Ondo, Ekiti and Osun States before the next general elections.

Obidient Movement Not for Religious, Ethnic Considerations – Peter Obi

By Jude Opara, Abuja

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) and the leader of the ‘Obidient Movement’ both in Nigeria and diaspora, Mr. Peter Obi has warned that the movement has no room whatsoever for religious, ethnic, and other parochial interests.

Obi in a series of tweets on Wednesday said that there is no looking back on the Movement’s objective of taking back Nigeria from those holding it down, saying that now is the right time.

“In the life of every nation, there is a turning point. For Nigeria, that time is now; a time to save Nigeria, save our democracy, and give the Nigerian youths hope.

The Obidient Movement has been the arrowhead in the take-back Nigeria mission.

The former governor of Anambra state said his role in the Movement is just to provide leadership and direction, “My role in the Movement is that of a Focal Point. As I’ve always stressed, Nigeria remains a secular state. As such, the movement is not about my tribe or my religion, and it is not an Igbo agenda or in any way, to Christianize Nigeria”.

“My aspiration is for a new Nigeria, where the children of a nobody will become somebody. A nation anchored on national interests, and not sectional interests; where the entire youths from the six geopolitical zones will have a sense of belonging in the affairs of their country.

He said that his ambition is to lead a united and indivisible Nigeria and warned against ascribing ethnic or religious coloration to the OBIdient Movement.

Obi drew the attention of Nigerians to what is happening in Scotland where  “A 37-year-old, Humza Yousaf is set to become Scotland’s first minister, having won the keenly contested SNP’s leadership contest. Born to Pakistani parents, who emigrated to Scotland in the 60s, Yousaf is from the ethnic minority and a Muslim.

“I have always maintained that Nigerians must rise above ethnicity, religion, and sectarian politics in matters of governance; and that the leadership selection process must be strictly based on Character,  Competence, Capacity, and Compassion, only then, shall our democracy flourish, and our society progress. Contextually, the Scottish reality is instructive and presents us with some lessons learned and missed opportunities,” he said.

Earlier, the leadership of the Labour Party (LP) held an interactive strategy session with Senate-elect and House of Representative-elect members, a session Obi said was to discuss leadership and working modalities for the incoming legislators and which he noted was very constructive.

The LP standard bearer who also on Tuesday attended the 16th Ayiam Osigwe Lecture in Lagos chaired by Chief Emeka Anyaoku where the  former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, was the guest speaker, strongly maintained that democratic and economic development hinges on credible polls, education, rule of Law.

Obi finally enjoined Nigerians, to strive for a leadership imbued with character, competence, capacity, credibility, and commitment.
