From Jude Dangwam, Jos

Stakeholders in the transport sector has converged in Jos the Plateau State capital to chat about a common front for the transformation of the transport systems in the region towards meeting global standards. The Conference organized by the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria in collaboration with the Plateau State Government with the theme: “Transforming Transport Infrastructure for Sustainable Economic Development in Nigeria,” held at Crispan Hotel, brought together participants across Benue, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau state respectively.

The Executive Governor of Plateau State Barr Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang declaring the conference open on Wednesday expressed the commitment of his administration to strengthen the transport sector which he said is key to the economic boost of Plateau state, the region and the entire country.
The Governor represented by the Head of Civil Service Stephen Pam Godong said there is an urgent need to revamp the transportation system within the region in order to unlock the vast economic potential that lies within the region.Mutfwang emphasizes, “As a nation, and particularly in the North Central region, we are confronted with the urgent need to revamp our transportation systems whether by road, rail, air, or waterways in order to unlock the vast economic potential that lies within our states and across the country.”For us in Plateau State, the transformation of transport infrastructure is not just a matter of development, it is a catalyst for peace, integration, economic prosperity, and job creation. A well-connected Plateau is a prosperous Plateau. We understand that no economy can thrive without a robust transport network.”Efficient logistics drive down the cost of goods, connect markets, boost tourism, facilitate trade, and encourage investments. Therefore, we are committed to prioritizing road rehabilitation, exploring rail linkages, and modernizing our urban and rural transport systems.” The Governor assured the gatheringMutfwang stressed that the state cannot do it alone but with strong collaboration. “We know we cannot walk this journey alone, that is why gatherings like this are crucial. The expertise and recommendations that will emerge from this conference can inform policy, strengthen inter-state collaborations, and guide implementation strategies at both state and regional levels,” Mutfwang emphasisedThe Chairman of Council, Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria, Prince Begun Ochuko Obayendo said the conference brought them together to evaluate not only where the region is but also how they can move forward collectively. He stressed that in most parts of the world, transport is well-regulated, well-funded, and given its rightful place in national development. “We must ask why it is not so here. We are gathered here to address that.Obayendo maintained that as a region, and the country at large, they must work towards building an intelligent transportation system with interconnected, accessible data across states. “The data from Kogi should be accessible in Plateau; Plateau’s should be visible in Lagos; that is how we modernize our systems.”Let’s also not forget our inland waterways. We’ve seen tragic incidents of boats capsizing, lives lost. Why does this keep happening? Is there no solution? Are we truly helpless? Last year alone, the number of deaths on inland waterways was alarming.”One of the problems is that these sectors, especially road and water transport are dominated by unlicensed, untrained, and unprofessional operators. Who licenses them? How were their vessels or vehicles certified? Are they even certified at all?”Until we fix these human capital issues, we will continue to abuse our infrastructure. It’s not enough to build roads and bus terminals if the people using them are not regulated or trained. The same applies to rail. While it is yet unconfirmed, initial reports suggest the recent derailment may have been due to vandalism.” He expressed concernsThe Plateau state Commissioner of Transport Hon. Davou Gyang Jatau noted that with the recent signing of the National Transport Policy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, “We are currently working on the Plateau State Transport Policy to align it with contemporary realities and national guidelines.”A robust and harmonized framework will ensure proper regulation, licensing, safety enforcement, and capacity development for transport operators across the state,” he stated.

NNPCL Credits PINL–Community Partnership as Bayelsa Records Zero Pipeline Infractions in April

From Mike Tayese, Yenagoa

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) has credited the result to the working partnership between Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL) and the host communities along the corridor.

The commendation came at a stakeholder meeting convened by PINL in Bayelsa to review operational performance and community engagement.

For the full month of April, no incidents were recorded on the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) or the Eastern Gas Network across Bayelsa State — no bunkering, no spillage, no infractions

“For the past month, there has been no incident in the whole of Bayelsa as far as we are concerned,” said Omojevwhe Akponime, Head of NNPCL’s Project Monitoring Office for the Eastern Corridor.

“That shows that the community and PINL are one in common.”

Akponime linked the result to rising production on the TNP, and called on the royal fathers, CDC chairmen, women’s leaders and youth groups present to sustain the collaboration. “Each time you give them your support, they will always do more for you,” he said.

PINL’s General Manager for Community and Stakeholder Relations, Dr. Akpos Mezeh, placed the achievement against the national target.

“Production has continued to increase,” Mezeh said. “By the grace of God, we’ll meet our target of 2.5 million barrels per day. It shows that the stakeholders are performing their obligations strictly in the partnership.”

Mezeh used the meeting to present cheques to beneficiaries of PINL’s women empowerment programme, encouraging recipients to invest the funds into their businesses. He also called on youth across the corridor to reject vandalism.

“If you go and spend money to install any illegal connection, you cannot reap it,” he said. “In the next 24 hours, we will get intelligence, and you will lose out. Vandalism is no longer profitable.”

Speaking for the beneficiaries, Madam Love Theophilus reinforced the message. “This empowerment is for business,” she told the women. “It’s not for big wrapper. It’s not for good shoes. Use the money to promote your business.”

The Trans Niger Pipeline is one of Nigeria’s most critical crude evacuation arteries. A month without infraction in Bayelsa is a direct contribution to national production and to the 2.5 million barrels per day target.
