Tinubu, APC Leadership Must Protect Performing Governors – Group
From Attah Ede, Makurdi
A political group under the platform of North-Central All Progressives Congress Forum, has called on President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to take all necessary measures to protect progressive governors who are performing credibly well in office.
The group particularly called on the national leadership of the ruling party to provide needed shields in and around governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, who is performing excellently. The forum stated that its advocacy also includes other public officials identified as valuable assets of the party due to their performance in office. They decried a situation where “Some so-called godfathers or kingmakers gang up to frustrate performing governors or public officials who refuse to bend to their selfish interests,” insisting that such actions should no longer be tolerated. The forum announced its endorsement of Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia for a second term in a statement released by its Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, on Wednesday in Abuja. In the statement, Zazzaga, a member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 election, disclosed that the forum, while in Benue State, inspected several projects, including the ongoing transformation of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, where the governor is constructing a N1.6 billion waterworks project, a cancer treatment center, the completed 16 urban roads, and the ongoing 21 urban roads and streetlight projects, as well as the underpass projects in Makurdi, the state capital, and Gboko. Other projects include the Manyam–Unongo Village–Adikpo (23 km) and Tyowanye–Uga (21 km) roads in Kwande and Buruku LGAs, as well as the renovation of the 40-year-old State Secretariat and the reconstruction of the State Assembly complex. It noted also that Alia is silently transforming Benue State with his projects despite opposition from some political leaders in the state. It expressed its support for the governor’s second term to enable him to consolidate his vision for the state and, by extension, the North-Central zone.Alia is engaged in a political battle with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, a leader of the APC in Benue State, as well as his predecessor, Chief Samuel Ortom, leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. There are speculations that the dispute with Akume, which has led to the factionalization of the Benue chapter of the APC, could jeopardize Alia’s chances for a second term. However, the North-Central APC Forum urged the governor to continue his mission to transform Benue and not be distracted by “spent forces” who are only after their selfish interests.Parts of the statement read: “The North-Central APC Forum on Tuesday, January 13, 2025, inspected major ongoing projects being executed by the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia in Benue State. The Forum has also assessed other initiatives being implemented by the Alia administration. The North-Central APC Forum further highlighted the establishment of a polythene and nylon factory, a nail production company, a fashion and ICT hub, and the expansion of bread and water factories by the Benue Investments and Property Company Limited under Alia’s administration.Lauding Alia for the development, the Forum emphasized the economic benefits of the initiatives, projected to create 300 direct and 400 indirect jobs. The North-Central APC Forum also highlighted a major project of Alia’s administration, the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL). Initiatives under the ACReSAL Project include the rehabilitation of dilapidated dams, such as Adoka-Icho Dam in Otukpo and Naka Dam in Gwer West, the renovation and upgrading of agricultural produce warehouses/agro hubs across all 23 local government areas, and the distribution of solar-powered irrigation pumps to farmer groups in the senatorial districts.Giving Alia a passing mark for the projects, the North-Central APC Forum urged President Bola Tinubu and the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, to protect Alia as a “valuable asset” of the party.NEWS

Customs Opens Review for Disqualified Recruits, Flags 397 Applicants
By Tambaya Julius, Abuja
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has opened a review process for applicants disqualified during its recent recruitment screening, following complaints from candidates who made the shortlist but were denied entry into the training college.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, ordered a case-by-case review after meeting with some of the affected applicants, according to a statement by the Service.
The NCS disclosed that 397 applicants were flagged during the screening over issues relating to substance abuse, physical fitness, medical records, age and submitted documents.
It clarified that the substance-abuse category excluded cigarette and alcohol use. Some other applicants were disqualified over irregularities discovered in their selection process.
The Service explained that making the final shortlist did not guarantee enlistment, as candidates were required to pass several stages of screening, including document verification, physical fitness and endurance tests, medical examinations, age checks and drug screening.
Affected applicants have been asked to submit their details and complaints to helpdesk@customs.gov.ng for assessment. Those seeking a review will undergo fresh screening, the Service said.
It added that the review would not automatically qualify any applicant for admission into the training college, stressing that all candidates must meet the prescribed recruitment requirements.
The NCS also warned that applicants found to have engaged in criminal conduct, including certificate fraud, could be referred to the appropriate authorities for investigation and prosecution.
The Service urged aggrieved candidates to use the designated email address to submit their complaints, saying the review was intended to address genuine concerns while preserving the credibility of the recruitment exercise.
It maintained that recruitment standards would not be compromised, given the Customs Service’s responsibilities for border protection, revenue collection, national security and public safety.

World Bank Tasks FG, States on Sustainable Cash Transfers
By Tambaya Julius, Abuja
The World Bank has urged the Federal Government and state governments to establish a sustainable social protection system, warning that Nigeria’s N658.9bn cash transfer programme needs wider coverage, adequate payments and regular disbursements to provide meaningful relief to vulnerable households.
As of September 2026, the Federal Government had disbursed N658.
9bn to 10.46 million poor and vulnerable households through direct cash transfers, using biometric and digital verification to identify beneficiaries and deliver payments. The bank, however, said the programme must move beyond emergency interventions to a reliable system backed by regular government funding.
The recommendation was contained in its latest Nigeria Development Update, titled ‘Beyond the Federal Purse: How Higher Revenues Shaped State Priorities’.
According to the report, the effectiveness of cash transfers depends on the number of households reached, the value of payments and how consistently beneficiaries receive them.
The bank called for dedicated budget allocations at both federal and state levels, with increased funding from domestic resources to ensure continuity and reduce dependence on temporary interventions.
It also stressed the need for stronger coordination between the two tiers of government to improve the delivery and monitoring of social assistance programmes.
The report said a predictable, adequately funded social protection system would help vulnerable Nigerians cope with economic pressures and improve household welfare.
Mean while, President Bola Tinubu has received the United Nations’ proposed 2027 budget, valued at about $14 billion, from Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the global body, Jimoh Ibrahim, who described the presentation as a historic milestone for the country, which is chairing the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Matters for the first time in 66 years.
