‘Transformative Agenda to Critical Sectors are My Rescue Mission’ – Dauda

From Ifeanyichukwu Nwannah, Gusau.

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal has declared that his administration’s rescue mission is transforming the State across critical sectors.

He began a series of events and project commissioning to mark Zamfara State’s 30th Anniversary, noting that the commissionings were attended by the Pioneer Military Administrator of Zamfara State, Col.

Jibril Bala Yakubu (Rtd.), former governors Ahmed Sani Yarima, Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi, and other dignitaries.

The Governor said that Zamfara State has moved from despair to an era of clear execution, transparency, and sustainable development.

He said, “Since Zamfara State was created on October 1, 1996, “Alhamdulillah for Allah’s grace, mercy, and protection that have guided us through trials and triumphs, uniting us in a shared destiny”

“As we watched our gallant security forces, paramilitary agencies, vibrant students and youth march in unity on the parade ground, we were reminded of the resilience that defines the Nigerian spirit and, most specifically, the strength of character of our people”

“We must reflect intentionally on the profound sacrifices of our founding fathers, who fought tirelessly to break the chains of colonial rule and give birth to a free, sovereign nation. We owe them an eternal debt of gratitude for protecting this country’s unity, peace, and territorial integrity”

“As we look forward to the next decade, we must understand that true independence demands collective responsibility. Government alone can’t do this. I call on traditional rulers, religious scholars, civil servants, traders, and our resilient youth to unite. We must set aside divisions—ethnic, political, sectarian—and protect the peace we fought for.”

Governor Lawal commissioned phase III of the renovated and modernised J.B. Yakubu Secretariat in Gusau as part of his effort to rebuild government institutions and create a modern, efficient, technology-enabled, results-oriented Public Service for Zamfara State.

The J.B. Yakubu Secretariat houses critical Ministries, Departments, and Agencies whose responsibilities span virtually every aspect of governance and service delivery.

The Governor said modernising the Secretariat will deepen coordination among MDAs, strengthen communication, promote institutional synergy, and support faster, more effective implementation of government decisions.

“The occasion is significant as we welcome His Excellency, Col. Jibril Bala Yakubu (Rtd.), Zamfara’s pioneer Military Administrator, after whom this Secretariat is named. As Zamfara marks thirty years since its creation, it’s fitting that a leader from our foundation is here to witness this milestone”

The pioneer Military Administrator of Zamfara State, Col. Jibril Bala Yakubu (Rtd.), lauded Governor Lawal’s giant strides, particularly in infrastructure, education, and health.

On the same day, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, mni, commissioned the reconstructed and remodelled Jumu’at Mosque (Yardole) and its attached shopping complex.

The mosque, named after Malam Sambo Dan Ashafa, a renowned Islamic scholar and companion of the great (MUJADDADI) and leader of the 1st Sokoto Jihad, Sheikh Uthman Ibn Fodiyo, will also serve as an Islamic and research learning centre.

The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has inaugurated two political support groups in Okpe Local Government Area to mobilise grassroots support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The groups, Concern Otirhue Movement for Sheriff and Tinubu, and Otirhue Progressive Movement for Sheriff and Tinubu, were inaugurated at a ceremony held in Mereje, Okpe LGA.

The groups were founded by the Chairman of the Delta State Local Government Service Commission, Hon.

Joseph Otirhue.

Speaking at the event, Otirhue said the initiative was aimed at strengthening the party’s grassroots structures and mobilising support for Tinubu, Oborevwori and other APC candidates in the 2027 elections.

He said the groups would mobilise voters for APC candidates contesting seats in the State and National Assemblies, with the ultimate objective of securing victory for the party at all levels.

Otirhue urged members to remain loyal and committed to the APC, while intensifying their engagement with residents and communities across Okpe.

Inaugurating the groups, the Delta APC Chairman, Chief Solomon Arenyeka, charged members to work diligently for the success of the party.

Arenyeka urged them to pursue the APC’s “five-over-five” objective by mobilising support for all the party’s candidates in the 2027 elections.

He also tasked the groups with taking the party’s message to the grassroots and maintaining active structures across the various communities in the local government area.

Other party leaders at the event called for unity and sustained grassroots mobilisation, stressing that continuous engagement with voters would be crucial to the APC’s performance in the 2027 elections.

The event also featured the empowerment of more than 250 beneficiaries by Otirhue, which he described as the fifth phase of his empowerment programme.

According to him, the programme was designed to provide support to party members and other beneficiaries, adding that those who were not included in the latest phase would be considered in subsequent editions.

Among dignitaries at the ceremony were former Minister of Culture and Information, Okakuro Prof. Sam Oyovbaire; Chief Robert Onome; member representing Okpe State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Okakuro James Augoye; and Chairman of Okpe Local Government Council, Okakuro Hon. Isaiah Esiovwa.

Others included former Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Hope Eghagha; Austin Ayemidejor; APC State Secretary, Okakuro Efe Uko; Chairman of the Delta State Civil Service Commission, Chief Rose Amioku; APC State Organising Secretary, Hon. Emmanuel Egbabor; as well as other party leaders and stakeholders.

The inauguration marked another step in the APC’s grassroots mobilisation efforts in Okpe, with members of the two groups pledging to strengthen their structures and mobilise support for Tinubu, Oborevwori and other APC candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.

Yari Urges Northerners to Honour Power Rotation, Back Tinubu’s Eight-Years Presidency

From Rabiu Sanusi Kano

Former Zamfara State Governor and Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari has called on Northerners to respect the country power-sharing arrangement and allow President Bola Tinubu to complete his constitutionally permitted eight-year tenure.

Yari made the call in Kano where he stressed the need for political leaders and citizens in the North to uphold the understanding that paved the way for the transfer of presidential power to the South in 2023.

According to him, the North has had a significant share of presidential power over the years, including the eight-year administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2023.

He therefore appealed to Northerners to reciprocate by supporting the principle of rotational presidency and allowing the South to complete its own eight-year cycle.

The APC chieftain argued that respecting the power-sharing arrangement would promote fairness, strengthen political trust among Nigeria’s diverse regions and contribute to national stability. He maintained that political interests should not be allowed to undermine agreements that promote peaceful coexistence and national unity.

Yari also urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 political season with maturity, cautioning against attempts to turn regional interests into a source of division. He said the presidency should be viewed as a national institution rather than the exclusive preserve of any particular region.

On the performance of the Tinubu administration, Yari acknowledged the economic and security challenges facing the country but said Nigerians should assess the government based on concrete economic indicators and policies rather than political narratives.

He argued that the challenges confronting Nigeria predated the present administration and required sustained efforts and collective responsibility to address them. He also pointed to ongoing measures by the Federal Government to stabilise the economy and improve the country’s development prospects.

Yari consequently appealed to political stakeholders, particularly in the North, to place national unity, stability and the long-term interests of Nigeria above individual political ambitions saying the country would benefit more from respecting established political understandings than from actions capable of deepening regional divisions.

Otu Reinstates 3,000 Sacked LG Workers

From Ene Asuquo, Calabar

Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has approved the restoration of about 3,000 local government workers earlier removed from the State’s payroll, following an extensive engagement with organised labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Cross River State chapters.

The Governor’s decision followed a frank and comprehensive discussion on workers’ welfare, recruitment, promotions, salary harmonisation, pensioners’ entitlements and other matters affecting industrial relations in the State.

The meeting, held at the State Executive Council Chambers, Calabar, provided the labour leaders an opportunity to present their concerns directly to the Governor. The NLC leadership particularly appealed for the reconsideration of the disengagement of workers who had already spent about two years in service, arguing that the affected persons were sons and daughters of Cross River who had built their livelihoods around their employment.

Responding, Governor Otu acknowledged the human dimension of the issue, noting that “people have been used to particular remuneration,” and that “to cut them off at short notice will be too much to absorb,” particularly when the withdrawal affected their entire source of livelihood.

The Governor explained that the administration’s intervention in the public service was motivated by the need to correct anomalies, restore due process and ensure that employment and remuneration were founded on appropriate qualifications and fairness. “I want you to believe that their feelings were based on the fact that people have been used to particular remuneration,” he said, stressing that the government was equally mindful of the consequences of abrupt changes.

He, however, maintained that the State must establish a public service in which opportunities are distributed equitably. “Somebody cannot be a secondary school [leaver] and already be getting an appointment,” he said, adding that “because you have the opportunity, that does not mean it is your family alone; others also deserve the opportunity.”

Governor Otu said his administration was determined to rebuild the State on the principles of fairness, productivity and shared responsibility, rather than perpetuating practices that could undermine the public service. “We are committed to the rebuilding of all these elements,” he declared, while appealing to labour leaders to “join hands” with the government in the task of rebuilding Cross River.

He emphasised that the government alone could not carry the burden of transforming the State, noting that “our relationship is principally a corporate relationship” and that the administration would continue to require “maximum cooperation” from organised labour to navigate the challenges confronting the State.

The Governor also drew attention to the State’s difficult financial circumstances, explaining that the government had been grappling with inherited obligations and substantial recurring commitments while simultaneously trying to improve workers’ welfare and develop infrastructure. He said the administration had worked hard to reduce the burden of outstanding liabilities, but that fresh obligations continued to emerge. “Almost every month we are taking out 300 to 600 [million],” he said, underscoring the pressure on the State’s finances. He nevertheless expressed optimism that sustained efforts to improve revenue and manage existing commitments would enable the government to address more of its outstanding obligations.

On the broader economic question, Governor Otu urged labour to look beyond confrontation and become a partner in the State’s development. “The real foundation for the economy has been laid,” he said, pointing to the administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure, create investment opportunities, strengthen human capacity and empower citizens. He declared that the State must move away from a “hand-to-mouth economy” towards one driven by productivity, enterprise and sustainable opportunities, stressing that “we must be ready to fold our shirts and take up the challenge” of rebuilding Cross River.

The Governor also acknowledged the other concerns presented by labour, including outstanding promotions, salary harmonisation and the welfare of low-income workers and pensioners. He assured the unions that the issues raised would receive further consideration through the examination of relevant official documents and briefs. “For the other issues, I will need at least some briefs,” he said, directing labour to submit the necessary documentation while the government would equally review its own records.

The meeting, he said, had provided an important opportunity for both sides to better understand the issues, resolve outstanding concerns and strengthen the partnership between government and organised labour, culminating in his approval for the restoration of the 4,000 affected local government workers.
