Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus, popularly known as Joeboy, has shared his thoughts on why Afrobeats music has gained massive global recognition.

Speaking during a recent interview, the singer credited the genre’s international success to several factors — chief among them being the outgoing and expressive nature of Nigerians.

“Afrobeats is here now because it has been a long time coming. And there’s so much talent, it’s only right that we just spread it to the world,” Joeboy said.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s large population, both at home and abroad, has contributed greatly to the popularity of Afrobeats, alongside the power of social media and the high-quality music emerging from the country.

“Thankfully, Nigeria has a very huge population back home and even in the diaspora.

Naturally, we are very loud. That’s what they said. So, we are very out there. And, wherever we are in the world, we like to represent [our culture]. That also played a huge role [in Afrobeats gaining global attention].”

Peter Okoye, one-half of the defunct Nigerian Afrobeats duo, P-Square, has accused his twin brother, Rudeboy of always joining popular trends to bring him down.

Peter had while responding to a question from his fan, asked “who Naija language help?”

The singer has been heavily criticised online following the controversial statement.

Distancing himself from Peter, Rudeboy in several posts on X said, “I’m a ‘nobody’.

I repeat! A nobody! Without the culture, native, language.”

However, reacting, Peter said “But again, bro, you’re at it again, using this moment as another opportunity to pull me down. Just like I wrote in my open letter two years ago, doing everything possible to make people hate me will never work.

“Yes, people are dragging me over my statement, and that is okay. I accept that. But deliberately twisting my words and using petty tactics to damage my reputation says a lot.”

“I don’t know why you look for every opportunity to make derisive comments or jump on the bandwagon whenever I am being attacked,” he said.
