Wike Insists on Removal of Illegal Houses on Road Corridor at Katampe

By Laide Akinboade, Abuja
The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike yesterday insisted that some parts of Gishiri village, on the road corridor of Arterial Road N16 through Gishiri Village in Katampe, must paveway for the ongoing road construction.
Wike, who personally visited the village in order to supervise the demolition of some of the houses on the road corridor, appealed to the residents to paveway for the ongoing construction of the road.
The squatters were throwing pebbles at the FCT officials that were carrying out their duties.
He appealed to them that the compensation is ready and FCT would also relocate them.
“Well, you realize that I have been here more than four times. We have sat down with the community leaders and their chiefs. I have told them the need for them to cooperate with the government so that the contractor, the CGC, will be able to correct this road and hand it over by May 2025.
“The traditional ruler, of course, pleaded with us to give them one week. The money for compensation has been made available. And we also promise them that as part of that, we will make available somewhere they can relocate.
“But with all these assurances, it does appear from what I got in the report that work is still not going on. And I did inform the traditional ruler that this work has to go on. And no government would fold his hand and allow people to sabotage the interest of the public, not as if anybody is coming to acquire land to build houses”.
“So I called them from Milan and said that I am going to be personally here to supervise this demolition. And that’s what I came for, letting them know that it’s no longer going to be business as usual.
“No. We’ve given them more than two, three months. And nobody can just fold their hands and say, okay, let it just stop.
“No, we won’t do that. Some would argue that you need to put a human face to it. I don’t know what a human face is more than what we’ve done.
‘All arrangements have been settled for the residents to leave this area and relocate to other areas. Yes, I said we have done that. And even the money for compensation has been given,” Wike stated.

NNPC Foundation Reiterates Commitment to Ensuring Food Security

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Foundation has renewed its commitment to ensuring food security in the country.
Mrs Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director, NNPC Foundation, said this on Wednesday in her remarks during the training of vulnerable farmers in Akwa Ibom.
Arukwe said that 6, 000 farmers across the country would be trained on modern farming methods and market access strategies to boost food production in the country.
Arukwe, who was represented by Dr Bala David, Executive Director, Programme Development and Coordinator, NNPC Foundation, added that the Foundation was dedicated to implementing impactful programmes that aligned with national priorities.
She said that more than 500 farmers in Akwa Ibom were trained by the NNPC Ltd Agricultural Training Initiative for Vulnerable Farmers on modern methods and strategies to boost food production.
Arukwe added that the farmers were drawn from the state’s 31 local government areas to participate in the training to equip them with techniques and market access strategies to add value to their businesses.
“This programme is a testament to our unwavering commitment to food security, economic empowerment and national development.
“As the corporate social responsibility arm of NNPC Ltd, the Foundation is dedicated to implementing impactful programmes that align with national priorities.
“This initiative is part of our broader efforts to support the Federal Government’s agricultural transformation agenda, which seeks to enhance food security, increase productivity, and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
“Our goal is to equip every participant with the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to transition from subsistence farming to commercial-scale production,” Arukwe said.
In her remarks, Dr Offiong Offor, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Akwa Ibom, thanked NNPC for the initiative to equip farmers with knowledge on modern farming.
Offor, represented by Dr Atim Okoko, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that a nation that trained farmers was a nation that would not go hungry.
“I want to express the state government’s appreciation to NNPC for mounting this laudable programme.
“A nation that starts to train farmers, a nation that starts to look at farmers will never go hungry.
“In this season that our President Bola Tinubu has come up with his Renewed Hope Agenda, everything is to end hunger in Nigeria,” Offor said.
The commissioner added that the programme came to complement what the state government was doing to ensure food sufficiency.
Responding on behalf of farmers, Mr Bassey Inwang, State Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) said farmers in the state were so grateful for the training.
Inwang said the training would boost food production in the state, as the farmers would apply the knowledge gained on their farms for increase in yields.
He said, “We want to tell you that we will not take this training for granted, we will apply it properly on our farms.” (NAN)

China slams U.S. bullying Egypt over Suez Canal Access Demands

China on Wednesday opposed bullying of Egypt after U.S President Donald Trump demanded American vessels’ free-of-charge passage through the Suez Canal and Panama Canal.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Lin Jian said Beijing firmly supports the Egyptian government and people in safeguarding their sovereignty, legitimate rights and interests.
While, it opposes any acts or words of bullying, said the state-media Global Times.
Lin, said Egypt’s sovereignty over and management and operation rights of the Suez Canal are indisputable.
U.S President Donald Trump last month said that American vessels should travel through the Panama and Suez canals without paying fees, claiming that these strategic passages owe their existence to the U.
S.Trump had directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to immediately take care of, and memorialise, this situation
The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through Panama, while the Suez Canal in Egypt links the Mediterranean and Red seas, providing the shortest maritime route between Europe, Indian and Western Pacific oceans.
Both canals charge substantial transit fees, potentially reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on vessel size and cargo. (AA/NAN)

Benue Governor Rejects Reps Committee Invitation

Alia will not honour the House of Representatives Committee invitation scheduled for Thursday, May 8.
His Chief Press Secretary, Mr Tersoo Kula, confirmed this to journalists on Wednesday in Makurdi.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the House had summoned the Governors of Benue and Zamfara, alongside their Assembly leadership.
Kula stated that the invitation is unconstitutional and the governor will not comply with it.
He explained that Alia has filed a case at the Supreme Court challenging the lawmakers’ invitation.
“Yesterday, the Benue Assembly passed a resolution rejecting the Reps Committee invitation.
“They believe the invitation is based on ignorance and have decided not to attend.
They will also challenge it in court,” he said.Kula added that the governor, independently, has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the invitation’s legality.
He said, “Since the matter is in court, I will not speak further on it.”
Kula also claimed that the civil society group behind the petition is faceless and unregistered.
According to him, the address on the group’s letterhead is fake and lacks credibility.
He said there is a coordinated campaign of misinformation and sponsored protests aimed at destabilising Benue.
In recent weeks, he noted, there have been protests in Abuja allegedly representing Benue people’s concerns.
“These protests aim to provoke a state of emergency in Benue by portraying it in a negative light,” he said.
He claimed the organisers seek to undermine progress and return to a failed political order.
“Their ultimate goal is to create chaos for selfish political gain,” Kula added.
He accused the protest sponsors of trying to remove the governor through disruptive means.
“They will not succeed. Benue people stand firmly with their governor,” he said.
He assured the public that Benue remains peaceful and the government is functioning effectively.
“Governor Alia is committed to fulfilling his mandate and addressing the state’s challenges,” he said. (NAN)
