From Attah Ede, Makurdi

In a move to curb arbitrary pricing of commodities and protect local farmers in Benue State, BIPC has introduced a disruptive mechanism to ensure fair pricing of commodities.

BIPC introduced price floors and a ceiling on commodities to protect both consumers and farmers as a major dealer.

With BIPC’s role in the price advisory space, it has caused disruption in the pricing to make essential farm produce more affordable and also positively impact food security in the state.

BIPC now advices on prices on major commodities as a subtle regulatory mechanism.

With the BIPC’s initiative, prices of agro commodities in the market, especially soyabeans, are more fair and not exploitative.

This move has also stopped sharp practices from middle men that usually hold farmers’ produce to resell at exorbitant prices.

Recall that the company in November last year promise to regulate price in the market space in Benue by introducing off-take of agro commodities such as paddy rice, sesame seed, soyabeans, maize, guinea corn and other commodities

The aim is to promote competitive markets by encouraging private sector investment in agricultural marketing and processing. This can provide subsidies or incentives to farmers to reduce production costs and increase supply. This can help reduce prices by increasing efficiency and addressing food insecurity and improving the economic conditions of Benue Farmers.

The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive officer of BIPC, Dr. Raymond Asemakaha, who stated this at Makurdi, maintained the company initiative has succeeded in reducing the prices of soyabeans that was sold N980 per kilogram in November and December to N970 per kilogram; while paddy rice that was sold during the period at N760 per kilogram is now sold at N660 per kilogram.

The GMD stated that the initiative will established a wholesale market for agricultural wholesale market for agricultural produce, which aims to reduce price and improve market for farmers

The GMD stated that we are not going to relent until consumers and farmers have value for their money as BIPC moves to ensure fair pricing.

He indicated that Soyabeans, price will further drop to N750 Per kilogram in the coming weeks while rice price will be peg at N600 per kilogram.

Asemakaha highlighted that the BIPC initiative has achieved the purpose it was intended as it has guaranteed markets, created fair prices and increased income for Benue Farmers.

The GMD added that the Agro commodities initiative will ensure Benue Civil Servants and the good people of Benue have food Security at affordable prices.

He commended Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia, the Executive Governor of Benue for reducing poverty, improving livelihoods and ensuring Sustainable development through the scheme.

The ongoing exercise is expected to continue in other major commodities including building materials, spare parts and others to foster positive change with long term benefits to the citizens of Benue State.

The Edo Commander of NDLEA, Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Benin.

Ofoyeju said the operations led to the seizure of 407.

He said Ehimeka, also known as Mama Grace, was arrested at her residence in Warake on Oct. 16, with 15 bags of cannabis weighing 179kg.

Ofoyeju noted that old age was no excuse for violating the law, adding that the command remained committed to combating illicit drug trafficking in the state.

“The NDLEA Act is clear: you cannot hide under the canopy of old age and perpetrate acts that violate the law.

“The octogenarian, Grace Ehimeka, was apprehended on Oct. 16, in her house at Warake community.

“This is a bad example for her children and grandchildren,” he said.

The commander said Ehimeka admitted ownership of the drugs in her statement and pleaded for another chance.

Economy would’ve Collapsed without Tinubu’s Reforms, Says Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said Nigeria’s economy would have collapsed had President Bola Tinubu not taken what he called far-reaching decisions.

He said but for the tough decisions, critics would by now be writing epistles on a collapsed economy from the comfort of their homes in Dubai and New York.

Shettima spoke at a forum titled ‘Together till 2027: An Evening with Original City Boy’, organised by the City Boy Movement in conjunction with the Relax-Tinubu-Is-Fixing-Nigeria movement, both of which are backing the President’s reelection in the January 2027 elections.

The Vice President credited the President’s decisions for the economy’s recovery.

He said, “The President took those far-reaching decisions. He had the courage of conviction and the knowledge to take those far-reaching decisions that repositioned the Nigerian economy, so that now the economy grew by 4.43 per cent in the last quarter.

“Most importantly, our foreign reserves are now hovering at the level of $60bn.

“Remember how far we have come. It’s only those who have been in the deepest valley that will appreciate how magnificent it is to be on a mountain top.”

To the critics of the administration, Shettima said, “The same people that are crying wolf. If the President had not taken those far-reaching decisions, Walahi, I am not talking to you as a politician. I am talking to you as a Nigerian, our economy would have collapsed.

“These people, by now, would be writing epistles on a collapsed economy from the comfort of their homes in Dubai, in New York, or in marriage with their young Moroccan wives.

“I have not mentioned anybody’s name.”

He admitted that Nigerians had endured hardship, but said it could have been worse.

“Your Excellency, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, the President has to be commended, not demonised.

“Yes, Nigerians have gone through some tough times, but it could have been worse.

“Be reassured that in the coming weeks, the President will come up with robust responses to agricultural challenges, and prices of foodstuff will certainly come down,” he stated.

The Vice President said efforts were being made to reposition the economy, citing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund and investments in infrastructure. He then asked the youth to carry the message to the streets.

“I urge the youth of Nigeria. I beseech thee. I implore you to go out to the streets and tell the truth to other Nigerians,” he stated.

At the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council on October 14, Shettima mocked the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and the former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, over their economic proposals.

The National Bureau of Statistics reported on August 31 that real GDP grew by 4.43 per cent in the second quarter, up from 4.23 per cent a year earlier.

It put headline inflation at 14.63 per cent in September, down from 15.39 per cent in August and 20.98 per cent in September 2025.

Food inflation, however, was 19.59 per cent.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria put external reserves at $55.07bn as of October 9.

The City Boy Movement, led by its Director-General, Francis Shoga, unveiled a nationwide campaign for Tinubu’s reelection on June 11, when Shettima received its leaders at the Presidential Villa.

The Minister of Youth Development said it had representatives in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The APC flags off its campaign in Kaduna on October 24, ahead of the presidential election on January 16, 2027.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) said no fewer than 56,000 candidates registered for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates (Second Series).

The Head, National Office (HNO), WAEC, Suleiman Kum, disclosed this during an inspection of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) English Language examination on Saturday in Lagos.

The inspection took place at the WAEC Training and Testing Centre, Ijaiye Road, Ogba, where candidates sat for the examination.

Kum said that the registered candidates included about 272 walk-in candidates who enrolled to remedy individual subjects.

He said that Lagos State recorded more than 22,000 candidates, including about 50 walk-in candidates sitting for the examination.

The WAEC official said that the adoption of CBT was to curb examination malpractices, strengthen the credibility of the exercise and promote transparency.

He said that WAEC introduced CBT in 2024 and had continued to improve the process to strengthen examination security and reduce malpractice.

“We have discovered that the Computer-Based Test, popularly known as CBT, is truly the best way to conduct examinations because malpractice is drastically reduced,” Kum said.

He said that candidates were thoroughly searched before entering examination halls, to prevent prohibited materials from being taken inside and safeguard the integrity of the exercise.

“We do not set traps for candidates; we want to prevent malpractice by ensuring they enter the examination hall without unauthorised materials,” Kum said.

He said that the council would continue to adopt innovations to improve examination administration and sustain its reputation for integrity.

“WAEC will continue to improve to ensure that it remains the benchmark for examination integrity and innovation in Nigeria,” Kum said.

The HNO advised candidates to study diligently, practise WAEC past questions and marking schemes, and read chief examiners’ reports to improve their performance.

“The chief examiners’ reports show candidates’ weaknesses, strengths and how they should answer questions, which can greatly improve their performance,” he said.

The examination is part of WAEC’s ongoing transition toward computer-based testing. (NAN)
