Surprise: EFCC Suspect Petitions Salami Panel, Seeks N250m Refund
By Mathew Dadiya, Abuja
The probe by the Justice Isa Salami Presidential Panel probing the suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Finakcial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) has taken another dimension as a suspect, Donald Wokoma, who is being tried by the EFCC over alleged N250million fraud on Amnesty Programme, petitioned the Panel on Tuesday asking it to stop his trial, dismiss the suit and release the N250m to him.
Wakoma is being prosecuted for the alleged stealing of N250m from the Amnesty Programme.
When the suspect’s lawyer, Victor Giwa refused to nail Magu, Wokoma was said to have hired another lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi, who petitioned Salami Panel for redress.
There was a controversial tape recording where Magu was said to have demanded N75million to scuttle the case but when he appeared before the panel yesterday, he exonerated Magu, saying the suspended EFCC boss was innocent of the matter.
The lawyer added that because he refused to nail Magu, that was the reason he was brought to the panel.
However, Wakoma engaged an Abuja based lawyer, Jideobi who then wrote a fresh petition and alleged that Magu and his “boys” had ”unlawfully frozen the accounts of a company, Damjay Integrated Services Limited, with Access Bank in 2018, without any court order.”
It was reported that the petition was forwarded by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel investigating the recovery of assets by the EFCC under Magu.”
The petitioner among others claimed that following the refusal of the bank to unfreeze the account, Magu and EFCC were dragged before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, where Justice O. C. Agbaza on November 21, 2018 declared the EFCC boss’s action as unlawful, illegal and ordered him to immediately unfreeze the said bank account.
In the petition signed by the legal practitioner on behalf of the company and addressed to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, Magu was alleged to have bluntly refused to comply with the order of the court despite not appealing against the judgment.
Insisting that the EFCC has no power under any Nigerian law to freeze any bank account without an order of court, Jideobi said Magu acted with impunity and trampled on the rule of law.
At the peak of the alleged unlawful act, the lawyer claimed that a group of officers operating under the name: “Magu Boys,” instead of obeying the court order acted as intermediaries to the company and allegedly demanded N75 million from the account as a condition for lifting the illegal restriction.

Following the report, operatives of the Sapele Area Command commenced an investigation, while the victim was taken to a medical facility for examination and treatment.
The school principal and vice-principal were also invited for questioning as the police intensified efforts to apprehend the suspect, who had reportedly abandoned the school bus and fled.
