The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has identified the just concluded Zuma International Film Festival as a catalyst for economic prosperity.

He also stated that the Administration’s commitment to making the Zuma Film Festival even bigger and better remains resolute.

The minister made this commitment at the closing ceremony and award night of the 2023 Zuma Film Festival in Abuja.

Wike, who was represented by the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, stressed that the Administration is dedicated to implementing strategic plans aimed at further elevating the festival’s stature and impact.

“We also seek to amplify the reach and prestige of the Zuma Film Festival on the world stage. This will attract more attention, participants, and investments, thereby augmenting the festival’s economic benefits for the FCT.

“We also plan to expand the festival’s programme to encompass a wider array of cultural activities, workshops, and educational initiatives.

“By diversifying the offerings, we aim to attract a broader audience, including enthusiasts, students, and professionals, thus amplifying the economic impact across various sectors”, he added.

Wike also assured participants that the FCT Administration would continue to support local filmmakers and nurture home grown talent.

His words, “We will continue to provide platforms, resources, and opportunities for budding filmmakers within the FCT, fostering an environment conducive to creative expression and innovation”.

While appreciating all the filmmakers, actors, producers, and everyone involved in the creation of these compelling works of art, the minister, however, called on them to carry forward the spirit of cultural convergence that has been the cornerstone of the festival.

Speaking earlier, the FCTA Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olusade Adesola, said the Zuma Film Festival has been an embodiment of the beauty found in the convergence of diverse cultures, ideologies, and creative expressions.

Adesola affirmed that throughout the festival’s period, residents of Abuja have witnessed a tapestry of narratives that have transcended boundaries, uniting people in the shared experience of the human story.

According to him, “Filmmakers, through their artistry, have not only entertained but have also provoked thoughts, stirred emotions, and fostered understanding among different cultures and traditions.

“Abuja, our beautiful city, has been adorned with the magic of storytelling, welcoming talents from around the globe to celebrate the richness of our collective human experiences”.

The highpoint of the event was the awards to deserving filmmakers, producers, actors amongst others.

JAMB: YabaTech Backs Oloyede’s Leadership Style, Urges Others To Take Cue

The Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech) has declared its total support for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) leadership amidst the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) developments.

Dr Ibraheem Abdul, Rector of Yabatech, disclosed in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

Abdul said that Prof Oloyede’s heartfelt apology and assumption of full responsibility demonstrated commendable leadership and integrity.

“We stand in solidarity with Prof Oloyede, we are with him in the future he beholds for JAMB. We reaffirm our confidence in his visionary leadership and urge other leaders in the country to take a cue from his leadership style,” he stated.

According to him, YabaTech remains committed to supporting JAMB’s initiatives and reforms aimed at enhancing the integrity and efficiency of its examination processes.

The rector noted that the recent technical glitches that affected approximately 379,997 candidates across 157 centres, particularly in Lagos and the South-East states, had understandably caused distress among students and stakeholders.

“As the Rector, and a dedicated advocate for educational excellence in Nigeria, I extend my unwavering support to Prof Is-haq Oloyede, Registrar of JAMB, and his entire team during this challenging period following the uproar concerning 2025 UTME.

“His commitment to transparency and prompt corrective measures, including the rescheduling of examinations for affected candidates, underscores his dedication to upholding the credibility of our educational assessments.

“This incident serves as a catalyst for all educational stakeholders to collaborate more closely, ensuring robust systems that can withstand unforeseen challenges,” he added.

The rector noted that though the overall performance in the 2025 UTME had raised concerns, it was, however, imperative to recognize the complexities involved in administering large-scale examinations in a technologically evolving environment. (NAN)

China Urges U.S. To End ‘Unilateral Bullying’ of tech, AI firms

China has called on the United States to immediately reverse what it described as protectionist and unilateral bullying actions, and to stop the suppression of Chinese technology companies and the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.

A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry made the remarks on Friday in response to recent U.

S.
regulatory actions.

According to reports, the U.

S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security recently issued a statement declaring the use of Huawei’s Ascend chips a violation of U.S. export controls.

It also warned of potential risks associated with allowing U.S.-developed AI chips to train Chinese AI models.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian condemned the move, saying the U.

S. was overstretching the concept of national security and abusing export controls and long-arm jurisdiction to unjustly target China’s chip and AI industries.

“These actions seriously violate market principles, disrupt global supply chains, and infringe on the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises,” Lin said.

“China firmly opposes this and will never accept it,” he added, warning that Beijing would take resolute measures to defend its development rights and protect its companies (Xinhua/NAN)
